My 17 year old stepson was in a serious car accident that nearly took his life. He is now in the rehabilitation stage (which can take years) with a severe traumatic brain injury (diffuse axonal injury). We have no idea how much he will progress--at this point, nearly three months in, he is not able to communicate or move to a large degree, but he does continue to do new things, so we keep hoping for the best. We have bought a variety of "toys" for his rehab, but with the holidays coming up, I am looking for more ideas.

His brain needs to heal and make new connections to mitigate the damage that was done. In order to help with this, we need to stimulate his senses. He also needs to re-learn motor skills. If anyone has any suggestions or experience, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you, and happy Luminaire!

As odd as it can sound, objects with different textures and anything that can be build in a moderate way of course. Board games (and strategy games) are also a very good way to make the brain re-learn.

(I have experience with Alzheimer patients) I wish him the best of luck in his recovery!

I would suggest music. What kind of music did he like before? Maybe some sort of music player with songs that he liked before and some new ones that are similar, a new pair of headphones/earbuds, or even a DVD of music videos/concerts that would stimulate both his visual and audio senses. Music has done a lot to help heal people and there's a lot of science behind that.
