I'm sure this is a less than intelligent question, but do flashlights have a purpose?

No, they don't really do anything. There are quite a few items like that on the site that don't really have a use as in, you can't wear them or eat them or do anything obvious with them. Some people like to have items like that just for galleries or pet treasures though.
