unfortunately, there is not.
What I usually do is use my keyboard to select the first letter of the category I want when I select the category drop down - that is a bit faster.

The vault thing is happening. When I said "I don't think that will happen soon", I was answering 's question about whether we could have the same thing for wishlists. I've been working on a new vault for the past few weeks :)
