I am struggling a lot right now I cannot pick which laptop I'd prefer. I'm looking for something really portable with/without needing to upgrade storage. It's basically a laptop for school (using Office) and when I'm travelling elsewhere. My current computer is fine and a 1T of storage (which is why I don't want a big thing)

I've set my eyes on these two here: o1. Asus 11'6" (amazon canada link) Weight: About 2 pounds Specs: Intel quad-core atom z8350 1.44 GHz (turbo to 1.92 GHz) processor, 32gb eMMC storage, 4gb ddr3 ram

AND o2. Weight: Almost 7 pounds Asus 15'6" (amazon canada link) Specs: Intel Dual-Core Celeron N3050 1.6 GHz (Turbo to 2.16 GHz) Processor 4GB DDR3 on board system memory, 500GB (5400 RPM) HDD storage

I'm looking for a budget laptop. My brother has a 15'6" one made by Asus and it's a very bulky and heavy laptop that I dislike. Any feedback? [edit] friendly ping? maybe you guys can help me. i'm ... more skilled with gaming laptop haha.

I'd go with option 2, if only because processing speed matters. Mine is a refurbished HP Pavilion g Series with a 2.53 GHz processor, and it is the bare minimum for my needs. I don't know what you want to do with yours, but I watch videos and play games a lot and mine still won't load some games.

HMMMM. i'm muuuuch more familiar with gaming laptops/PCs but for what you're wanting to use it for, i think i'd pick option 1! just because it's lighter, smaller, and therefore way more portable, and you obviously want to travel with it and take it to school and stuff, not use it for playing games c: warning that my advice MIGHT BE TERRIBLE though! good luck deciding between them <3

Yeah. I do take speed into consideration but that's beyond the point when it comes to what I need. I know the first one runs some games like Minecraft (w very low fps) but the rest is a nope. I do plan to watch youtube videos. So basically, using it for Microsoft Office and online browsing mostly. If only specs of option 2 was in the body of option 1 ... I've been considering a refurbished at 14'1 inch. There are a few on Ebay with first gen of i5 and more. @ Kudamon [Edit] SAME q____q Like I'm used to heavy techs but I have no clue when it comes to light stuff. I know some of my gaming devices are slower on the internet bc they are powered for games. TY tho! /confused flop

@ far If you don't mind waiting until like.. 2 hours from now, I can ask my partner if he has any advice. Computers are basically his job for a living so I could see if he has any commentary to pass on.

He only had time to give a quick glance at the specs you posted & could only comment that they were kind of strange combos for either choice. Which isn't helpful at all, thanks, LOL.

I know zero about this stuff, myself, unfortunately.

I guess my 2cents would definitely be echoing the advice to go for lighter. If you're lugging this around for school that strikes me as important. Since I have no idea what I'm looking at, does any of this mean that it can be upgraded at a later time to allow for like, larger memory space & all of that good stuff in case you change your mind on what you want it for later? I know that's the route my roommate's going for the netbook/small laptop they want to eventually purchase for writing purposes, so that it's within their budget.

Maybe something else to look at, if that helps at all.

Option 1 should accommodate the bare necessities (Office, email, web surfing, cat videos, Netflix, etc). Plus, for sure, I wouldn't want to regularly carry anything bulky or heavier than 5lbs.

it absolutely has to go with 2 things: utilisation and budget ie.: do you need it to run Photoshop, do you play live games, etc. or do you just navigate web here and there anything under a quad nowadays is iiiiissshhh, and i'd be really concerned with 4GB RAM, even for a laptop that is super low, you'll most likely encounter lag, even for things like Office possibly? :O but mmh yeah it's so hard to compare oc to lap, but i asked my husband's specs for his job one and he has intel i7 2.7 GHz 16GB RAM (HP ProBook 650 G2) gives an idea hugs GL!!

7 lbs? yeah, ain't nobody got time for that option 1

you still have another computer to game, do other things on, so it feels like kind of a no-brainer? gl~

- Looking at the specs and your needs, I say option 1 would be the best one.

  1. Since you plan on taking it to school and other places, having a light laptop will make a huge difference. It's also smaller, so it's easier to fit into backpacks and whatnot.
  2. The battery life is good.
  3. You can always get an SD card/external hard drive/USB flash drive if you need extra storage.
  4. I looked up both processors and compared them. The quad core is overall better performance-wise, especially since you're probably going to do a lot of multitasking. Since you're not going to do anything intensive on the laptop, the processor should be fine.

I won't use the laptop much aside from using the webcam for Skype calls. As for carrying it around, I'm only taking it to school if requested by a teacher for a class. So ... I'm still confused and unsure haha.

I'm going to email Amazon regarding their returning policies when it comes to electronic devices. ... I've decided to get both and test both of them. That's ... the most simple idea I can conclude with lmao.

Thank you for the help fam q__q

Haha I mean, as long as it's an easy process to return one, that sounds like a wonderful way to compare laptops.

Just showing my support for Asus. I'm currently using an Asus laptop at home and HP at work (not company-owned, it's a personal computer that is only used for work), and my Asus trumps the HP in my personal opinion at least. Normally I only get 2-2.5 years out of a computer, but I've had my Asus for 4 years and counting now and it's still kicking.

Also decided to comment to agree with with concerns of the 4gb RAM. My HP at work only has 4gb and it gets pretty sluggish and freezes up frequently, and I've only had it since late-January. But at the same time, my dad literally has the exact same laptop and he has no troubles soooo maybe my HP just hates me.

I might just take the smaller one and see how it performs. I've been pondering it while using my brother's laptop and 15'6 inch is simply too much of a burden to carry around. My go-to brands are both Asus and Dell. I reckon, Dell is on the most expensive and bulky side. Their new Inspiron 3000 are too expensive for their true worth imo. I'm not that concerned with the RAM. I'm planning to slip a 64 gb SD slot as a permanent extra storage to have AVG, office or open office and Mozilla Firefox so I can adblock (this will help keep the speed up). I cannot see myself playing Minecraft on a 11 inch laptop when I use my 21 inch monitor at home to do so. It's ... too small to appreciate the gameplay haha. @ Tali [edit] obviously dunno how to english today [Edit] Can you lock this please? ty!
