This lesson contains an ESSAY TOPIC or PRACTICAL assignment.
"Today we'll be showing you how to make healing salves. A salve is a thick ointment that can be used to soothe or heal the skin. Some salves are known to treat bug bites while others are used to get rid of acne and warts. We'll be using infused oils, beeswax, and essential oils as key ingredients in our salves," stated Professor Khouri.
"The beeswax will act as a binding agent, as it binds the healing oil components of the salve. It is also used to thicken and harden the salve. The essential oils are mainly used for their scent, but can also be chosen for their medicinal properties. I usually add peppermint oil to my salves for its refreshing and clean scent, but it doesn't hurt that peppermint essential oil is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties and mood-elevating properties," added Professor Bishop-Hermann.
"The most difficult component of the salve is the herbal infused oil. You will not be able to complete the salve until you complete making your own infused oil. The best method to make the infused oil will take a few weeks to complete. Today you will be making the infused oil. To make the infused oil, you need to fill the jars in front of you about halfway with dried herbs. Professor Bishop-Hermann and I have placed the dried herbs you'd like to use on this table here," Professor Khouri said as she pointed towards the long table of herbs.
"You can choose to use one herb or various herbs for your salve. You may want to chop up the herbs or grind them before placing them in the jar. Once your jar is halfway full, you will need to add a vegetable oil. The oil must completely cover the dried herbs. For today's lesson, we'll be using olive oil."
"You'll be leaving your jars with us today. Professor Bishop-Hermann and I will complete the salve for you. The herb infused oils will take about 2-4 weeks to be complete. For the solar infusion method, the jars of dried herbs and oil are placed by a window for a few weeks. The jars need to be exposed to the sun and shaken every day for infusion to take place. Afterwards, a cheesecloth is used to strain the infused oil."
"The remaining steps of making the salve are quite simple. The herbal infused oil and beeswax are heated together until the beeswax melts over a low heat. Drops of essential oil can be added to the melted oil infused wax, once the wax is off the heat," said Professor Bishop-Hermann, concluding the lesson.
Look through this list of herbs (feel free to include herbs not included in this list) and choose which herbs you plan to use for the herbal infused oil.
What herbs will you use for your salve? Why have you chosen these herbs? What are the benefits of using them? Who will find this salve useful? Will you add some essential oils to your salve? If so, which ones and why?
It is okay to answer the questions in roleplay format.
Your essay will be graded out of a maximum of 15 Tournament Points. Bonus points may be awarded.
This assignment is due by August 26th at 11:59PM.

Kat wasn’t much for plants but each class had its different learning experience. She decided to make a healing concoction. She looked over the different herbs and decided to work with Agrimony, Arnica, Echinacea, Calendula. She gathered them all up and started mashing them together. It wasn’t the prettiest of concoctions.
Sore muscles and suffering from a cold Salve Herbs: Agrimony, Arnica, Enchinacea, Calendula Oils: Mint extract
Sore muscles can be caused by a wide variety of circumstances. The same goes for colds. A temperature change can make any number of sore muscles or get someone sick enough to not be feeling quite right. These can all be remedied with this concoction. These four ingrediants work together to stop colds from happening in the first place or if you have not been applying before a cold will end the sickness before it gets worse. If working hard and sore muscles appear this salve can help to reduce the pain caused by hard work. Kat - ILVERMORNY
Ivy was excited by Professor Bishop-Hermann and Professor Khouri's joint lesson. "This is more like it," she thought. She'd much rather create her own salve than brew Doxycide in Potions. Ivy approached the long table very quickly. She wanted to make sure the best selection of dried herbs available went into her herbal infused oil. Into a basket, beside her jar, went linen pouches that she filled with calendula flowers, chamomile flowers, and schizandra berries. Ivy then grabbed fresh aloe leaves and filled a tiny glass bottle topped by a dropper with some vanilla essential oil. Her salve would only need a little because essential oils are extremely potent.
Full basket in hand, Ivy found an isolated spot to arrange her things and get started after she washed her hands thoroughly. She slipped her small silver knife out of its sheath and placed it on the table with a mortar and pestle, a cup measure, a large ceramic bowl, a wide funnel, a piece of parchment for jotting down notes, a quill, and an inkwell. Then she began by adding the calendula flowers to her mortar. Ivy ground them with her pestle very gently, just enough to break them down a bit. She carefully measured out a half cup and dumped them into her jar. The chamomile flowers and schizandra berries got the same treatment, except she added a full cup of the chamomile to the jar.
Pausing to stretch her neck and take notes for her essay, Ivy then methodically split open the four aloe leaves and collected their gel and juice in a bowl before she added them to the dry ingredients. She placed the funnel in the jar and poured in the entire contents of the bowl. Ivy took a small jug of olive oil and funneled it into her jar until it was about 90% full. Finally, she delicately squeezed out seven large drops of vanilla essential oil to fragrance her infusion.
She chatted and flirted as she cleaned up, taking a seat at a table near some tall boys to compose her essay.

Ivy's Splendid Salve
Dry ingredients
[li]1/2 cup calendula flowers
[li]1 cup chamomile flowers
[li]1/2 cup schizandra berries
Wet ingredients
[li]4 broad aloe leaves (for gel and juice)
[li]7 drops vanilla essential oil
(Infusing olive oil with these ingredients and then adding the infusion to beeswax will create the salve. Combine the dry ingredients, the aloe gel, and then the oils in a jar and use the solar infusion method. Heat the infusion together with beeswax. The hardened result will be a gentle and soothing salve.)
This herbal infused oil is for a salve to heal and soothe chapped noses. Frequent nose blowing from symptoms of cold, flu, and allergies leaves the delicate skin dry, cracked, and irritated. This balm may also be used to moisturize lips, cuticles, and rough patches. It's very gentle and will provide relief for sore noses. This herbal salve is safe to use on sensitive skin and on the face.
The herbal components of this salve are aloe, calendula, chamomile, schizandra, and vanilla. Aloe is hydrating and refreshing. Calendula promotes tissue repair. Chamomile is anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiseptic, antibacterial and antispasmodic. Schizandra is highly beneficial to the skin. Vanilla is skin-soothing and antioxidant.
All of the herbs chosen for my salve are proven to be beneficial and non-irritating for the skin. The only essential oil used is vanilla, which imparts a lovely fragrance and flavor without risk of an adverse reaction. Since this salve is meant for the face, the ingredients were chosen especially carefully. This herbal salve makes for an excellent multipurpose balm or lip balm, but has been specifically formulated to aid in the recovery of chapped noses. It's perfect for cold and flu season.
Love the reference! 😊

Pitt's Lip Cream
Herbs: Aloe Leaves, Schizandra (Berries)
Oils: Citrus Tangerina (Tangerine) Peel Oil, Coconut Oil, Rosa Canina (Dog Rose) Fruit Oil
Chapped lips are characterized by cracking and peeling of the skin of the lips. The lips are delicate and can react to changes in weather or to stress (habits such as lip-biting). This lip salve can be used frequently to moisturise and soften lips. It uses several essential oils to nourish the skin and scent the product.
The chosen ingredients will have a positive effect on the condition of your lips. The herbal ingredients of Aloe and Schizandra are used as main ingredients of many skin care products. Schizandra fruit (also known as five-flavour berry) is particularly beneficial to the skin.
The oil-based ingredients listed are valuable additions to the salve. Tangerine Peel Oil, as well as scenting the salve, is a cytophylactic - this means that certain components of the oil stimulate the generation of new cells, which also helps to repair the regular wear and tear damage done to the lips. Coconut Oil is a nourishing product, and studies on individuals with dry skin show that coconut oil can improve the moisture content of the skin. Rosa Canina (Dog Rose) Fruit Oil also bears skin-conditioning properties.
Although designed to repair damaged lips, this salve can be used as a versatile moisturiser for the face and body.

Focus & Digestive Salve
Eva loved making healing potions and was bubbling over with joy at the change to make salve, as she had never made one before.
She immediately began to review the essential oils, because she thought finding the right scent for the salve would help her pick out the perfect herbs. After much consideration, Eva decided to use peppermint oil because it can help enhance your mood, mental focus and helps in digestion and also lemon oil because this oil can also aid in digestion and concentration.
As for the herbs, she was quite familiar with them because herbology was one of her favorite classes. She decided to use American ginseng due to its treatment in digestive disorders and ADHD (aka inability to focus), she also decided to use chicory for its known treatment of ingestion and lastly, lion’s mane because it promotes digestive health and it also can help improve memory. Eva got up from her chair and went to the table with all the herbs, looking for the ones she wanted. As soon as she spotted them, she collected them up and brought them back to her table. She then got out a knife in order to chop them up and once they were all chopped up, she then ground up the smaller pieces and then placed them into her jar.
Once she felt she had the jar half-way full, she grabbed the peppermint and lemon oil and cascaded them over the herbs making sure to completely cover them.
Focus & Digestive salve will be useful for people who need help staying focused, especially with an upset stomach, which happens to plenty of people…especially during finals week!

Nate didn´t really enjoy Herbology class but he´d give it a try anyway.
He looked through the essential oils and chooses cedarwood because it helps alleviating stress.
And also chooses chamomille for it´s calming effects.
Next he looks at the herbs the professor presented. For his salve which would be a stress relieving salve he will use Cordyceps. Which help with providing more oxygen to the blood. It also helps with asthma, coughs and bronchitis. It also helps boosting the immune-system.
He then proceeded to cut the mushrooms into smaller pieces and mixed everything with the cedarwood and chamomille oil and the beewax. The salve will be stress-relieving. It will be called "Thane´s anti-stress salve" Zachary Thane Underwood/Hogwarts

Lenore looked around at the assortment of herbs on the tables. The smells were rather intoxicating and earthy though so muddled it was hard to get an idea of what each one was like. After the Professors had finished with their instructions the students began crowding around the herbs and jostling for jars. Lenore quickly found a quiet corner and waited.
Does no one understand how to be organized? she wondered to herself, feeling agitated at the noise and confusion that always accompanies crowds. She had always felt that the more people were added to a room, the lower the rate of logic became. We really don't have to crowd in all at once.
Her irritation gave her an idea. Pulling out her herbology book, she began flipping pages in search of herbs that would help her in dealing with others. The first one she came across was beech. Maybe that's why I was given a beech wand. Lenore thought, To keep me from hexing everyone around me.

Beech Tree Buds - dried Impatiens (Jewelweed) - fresh and roughly chopped Water Violets - fresh wilted
Beech Tree is helpful in dealing with stressful situations and relieves feelings of intolerance. Impatiens and Water Violets are both known stress-relievers. With this blend, working with multiple people as a team becomes easier for those who prefer to conquer tasks alone and become irritable when faced with the perceived 'slowness' of others.
For scent, add refreshing Lemon and anger-relieving Ylang Ylang.

Corvus looked over to the table with the different plants to open himself to the topic of this lesson. The different hues of green amongst the plants were quite soothing and he opened his textbook calmly to take notes.
After a while, he stopped and pondered over his notes, realizing that most of them circled around treating common cold. He wanted to do something different and started to think about the assignment again. The teachers said it should be a salve, which would be applied to the skin. With the word 'skin' crossing his mind, he had a sudden inspiration.
Corvus Farlan Montgomery ~ Horned Serpent ~ Ilvermorny
Montgomery's Marvellous Moisturizer (for short MMM )
This salve is made especially for the face, but can be used on the whole body to keep the skin moist and clear. It's contents are freshly chopped lemongrass, likewise fresh cut aloe and dried, then powdered Schizandra berries. MMM consists of two essential oils - carrot seed and a bit of geranium. It's a salve for everybody who strives to achieve the look of fresh, clear and young skin. The fresh lemongrass makes MMM appealing to men, while the geranium essential oil attracts women as it has a great floral scent.
Lemongrass is a natural treat for a variety of skin problems, making it a good base for the salve. It also keeps the skin moist and clear, which is the main intention of MMM. Aloe has similar effects as lemongrass, but it is more commonly used in skin products. With its high amount of water inside the thick leaves, it soothes skin irritations. Schizandra berries are kind of an all-rounder. The Chinese refer to this fruit as 'five flavor fruit' (Wu Wei Zu) because the berries contain all of the five tastes: salty, sweet, bitter, pungent and sour. According to traditional chinese medicine, Schizandra is capable of entering all 12 meridians, which makes it kinda superior to other herbs. Still being a famous 'beauty tonic', it has a rejuvenating effect on the skin.
Carrot seed essential oil supports the rejuvenating effect. It helps to smooth the skin, assists with cell regeneration and even helps to fade scars. Geranium improves the skin elasticity and tightens the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

My salve will have:
[li]Ashwagandha - whole seeds; coarsely chopped roots and leaves
[li]Chamomile - crushed flower heads
[li]Passionflower - wilted petals
[li]Valerian - finely chopped roots
All of these herbs have been chosen for their anti-anxiety properties, as my salve is meant to used during the oh-so-stressful times of O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s!
The Ashwagandha helps boost the immune system as well as relieve stress - both of which are very important during test-taking time. Chamomile also has calming effects, to help students focus on the material at hand rather than the stress around them. Passionflower adds anxiety management boosters and stomach-calming effects. The benefit of the Valerian Root is to help with any insomnia that crops up during exams, in addition to being a general stress/anxiety breaker.
The passionflower adds a pleasant fragrance when combined with the chamomile, negating the need for the addition of further essential oils.

For the infused oil I have chosen to use arnica, boswelia, and cinnamon to prepare an oil good for inflammation, pain in joints, and sore muscles mostly but it will have other possible benefits. The flower of the arnica is used to treat sore muscles, sprains, and bruises but it also contains anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-septic properties which are all perfect qualities for my infusion. Although boswelia have been used for many years to treat different symptoms, today I chose it for its benefits to treat inflammation and pain of the joints. As for cinanmon I not only chose it for the fragrance but also for its benefits as an anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, antibacterial and antispasmodic properties.
For an essential oil I would choose neem-oil not because of its smell but for the many benefits it posses. The fatty acids and vitamin E found in neem oil are easily absorbed into the skin without leaving the skin greasy. Once absorbed, these powerful properties work to rejuvenate the skin’s cells and restore elasticity. Benefit-rich vitamin E acts as a free radical scavenger, by hindering the oxidizing processes in the skin. It promotes soft and supple skin, helps in reducing old scars and promotes healing. Neem oil also help to reduce inflammation, reduce infections, and even serves as an insect repellent.
Those that would benefit the most from this salve would be anyone that suffers from pain in joints, athletes with muscle soreness, and anyone with skin irritation or inflammation. People with conditions such as arthritis, neuropathy, and diabetes -among others- can also use this balm to help cope with the natural symptoms of the illness.

Niamh looked at the table of herbs, and realised it was her chance to at least try to pick the right ingredients to create a salve to soothe the eczema that had appeared on her arms due to the unusual (at least for her) weather conditions in America. She picked up a few herbs, and went back to her table.
"Chamomile should be great for soothing angry skin," she muttered under her breath as she chopped it into small pieces. The next herb she had recognised instantly - Agrimony was used by the Ancient Egyptians after all, and her parents had instilled an interest in the history of the area when she was younger. She knew it had antibacterial properties, and would be perfect for keeping the affected skin clean. The olive oil they would be using would give enough grease to the salve so it would be easy to apply smoothly regardless of how her skin was, but at the moment the herb mixture smelt somewhat nasty, so Niamh figured it needed a few drops of essential oil to make it more appealing. She decided on two drops of peppermint essential oil as she liked the smell, and one small drop of Patchouli oil, as according to her herbology book, it was said to be good for skin cell regeration. Adding the chopped Chamomile to the jar, she crushed the Agrimony and tipped that in as well. The jar wasn't quite half full, so she chopped a little more Chamomile before pouring olive oil over the herbs.

I will be making a salve to be used for monthly troubles, using dong quai, black cohosh and chaste tree, which are traditionally used for feminine complaints. I am adding a tincture of pennyroyal, because this herb has similar effects, with a nice minty smell. It is to be noted that this should not be taken internally as the safe dosage for some of these herbs internally is much smaller than it is for topical use. It is also to be noted that while this salve should not be used if you are pregnant, its ingredients, used sparingly, can be helpful when your flow is overdue. However, if this does not work, you should consult a healer immediately rather than increasing the dosage.
Growing up in Africa led Ebele to experience many different approaches to healing ailments of the body. Many remedies included a shaman or priest simply because it was far cheaper than going to hospital. Also, many of her kinsfolk and friends feared going to hospital because many people died there. They paid no mind to the fact that those going to hospital usually had waited until they were extremely sick and were already dying or had incurable ailments. That being said, Ebele had been trained in making healing ointments of all sorts utilizing the oils, plants, fungi, and other ingredients that were readily available for trade or procurement in the open spaces. Ebele never did enjoy using beeswax in salves that she intended to use on her skin; she preferred coconut oil and butter made from coconuts.
The recipe that Ebele followed was one she’d learned from her grandmother about a year ago. Her grandmother had found a new ingredient with fascinating potential in longevity, Jiaogulan, which is supposed to help the body rejuvenate. Her grandmother added it to their top notch immortality potion; the remaining ingredients are a closely guarded family secret.
All of the other students had already gathered several oils, herbs, and other items for their oil infusions. Ebele got up and walked over to the cabinet that housed the collection of ingredients and pulled several down and placed them on her wooden preparation tray. Once back at her desk she quickly wrote down all the ingredients that she intended to use.
Clove oil, dragon’s blood sap, and vanilla bean paste were the first three essential oil-type ingredients. All of which add a high level of antioxidants to the salve. Antioxidants were highly useful for cellular rejuvenation and protection against free radicals in the blood which can cause genetic mutations. The next two ingredients were all adaptogens, which meant that they were highly useful in a variety of ways. Adaptogens adapt to any need required, helping almost anyone regardless of their ailment. The next ingredients were American Ginseng root powder, which would energize ad rejuvenate the skin and body as it absorbed into the blood stream; and Cordyceps (Caterpillar fungus), which would balance the energies of the body with plenty of vigor and vitality.
These particular ingredients were chosen because Ebele wanted to create an ointment that would rejuvenate, energize, and restore the body. This salve would be most beneficial if used every morning and evening to any area of skin that needed revitalization and youthful appearances restored.
She wrote further instructions down for the salve, that it was supposed to be formed with one part beeswax and 4 parts coconut butter in order for full effectiveness. Ebele shook the ingredients of her jars and hoped that she might be present for when the oil infusions were finished, so she could add her finishing touches. She knew that creating powerful ointments was more of an art than most would ever appreciate, and Ebele took pride in her work.
The essay portion of the assignment was finished as her infusions sat in front of her. She looked down at her concoctions and smiled, knowing that her grandmother would be quite p[leased with Ebele’s work.

I really really extremely want:Zala listened to the instructions and a smile bloomed on her face. The process of making an infused oil for a cream was very enjoyable and relaxing for her. In recent months she had been busy advancing her classes and studying for a number of exams. She decided her product would be a study aid.
For a Memory Miracle Formula the chosen herbs should be able to grant you a cognitive boost. Ginkgo leaves help increase blood flow to the brain and also act as a good antioxidant. Bacopa has a positive effect on neurotransmitters and improves both long and short term memory. The third herb for the study booster is Holy Basil. As it protects the mind and body as well as work as an anxiety and depression remedy the user can fully focus on upcoming examinations with little worries. Though I would advise the user to apply the salve with care. Too much might be detrimental due to the increase in brain capabilities overwhelming you.
Whilst the 3 herbs combined give you a huge advantage during your studies and exams, they do not keep you awake through the heavy mental tasks. Adding Rosemary and Peppermint oils will give the lotion a very refreshing and pleasant scent. Both oils further improve your mental state as they help you focus and keep headaches away.
Combining those 5 ingredients will create my Memory Miracle Formula. The salve should be useful for all who are required to complete complicated tasks and it is especially useful for examinees in preparation. So long as it is used with caution there should be no negative effects whatsoever. This would truly be a Miracle potion.
Brandon Calder - Ilvermorny - Thunderbird
After entering Greenhouse B, Bran listened to the assignment and took a bit to think about how he wanted to proceed. A healing salve…hmm, the boy thought to himself as he went over to peruse the herbs on the table. Though he wasn’t the best herbology student, mixing and making a salve was enough like potions that Bran saw it as a fun challenge. His love of hiking and exploring had made him familiar with some of the herbs on the table, but he continued the search until he found two that he believed to be compatible. Taking the leaves of Bee Balm and the leaves and dried flowers of Echinacea, Bran crushed both into a fine powder, releasing a faint lemony scent. He smiled to himself at the fresh scent, knowing exactly what he wanted to add as an essential oil as well.
He had decided to use Bee Balm because it is commonly used in poultices for skin infections or irritations such as sunburn or dry, itchy skin. It also is useful for healing minor wounds. The leaves contain thymol which is an antibiotic. Echinacea can be ground into a fine powder and used externally as an ointment to treat wounds and even snakebite. It has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic properties, making the two herbs very similar. Bran had decided to also add lemongrass oil as the final ingredient when the salve was done. Lemongrass oil is known for its skin healing properties. It relieves muscle pain, can ward off insects, and when used externally helps kill bacteria making it a perfect addition to an antibiotic salve.
Pouring the ground herbs into his jar, Bran added olive oil to the half-full jar until the herbs were completely covered. He took jar to Professor Bishop-Hermann and said, “When the time comes, Professor, I’d like lemongrass oil to be added to my salve mixture. Not only will it amplify the lemony scent from the Bee Balm, but it will also add to the healing element since it is antiseptic like Bee Balm and Echinacea. And it has the added bonus that the clean, tangy scent reduces anxiety, helps alleviate headaches, and promotes sound sleep by overpowering mental fatigue and promoting a positive outlook. And everyone needs that.” He smiled at the professor. “I might even need some myself before this tournament is through.”
