Eyy. I'm Ember.

I'm here because I got roped into a tabletop game, and my DM made avatars of all of the players' characters via subeta. I got curious, so I poked my nose in, and voila, the hole that has been in my life since I stopped playing Gaia Online seems to have been filled?

I'm still pretty confused about some things (I have map pieces from the Omen Islands and I have NO IDEA where they came from or how to collect more), but I'm having fun hurling myself into the fray and figuring things out as I go along.

My question for you guys is: what do you wish someone had told you when you were a newbie?

OH because hey, I just realized you might want to know a thing about me: I love Tori Amos, I'm currently working my way through Star Trek: The Next Generation and I have music-color synesthesia. :3

Hey, welcome!

Omen Island map pieces come from random events as far as I'm aware and they're pretty rare. Or, you can buy them from user shops. They unlock a special map area ;)

Hm...what I wished people told me when I was new? Do quests. Do all the quests. They're the most basic way to make money here and yes I am guilty of being too tired to do them and that's why I can't do any of the site plots/events properly, because of no money.

Another important thing is to train your pets! Most site events use the battle system in some way and they give exclusive items (from wearables to plushies). Trust me, you want to have your pets trained and equipped and ready to go. You can train them at the Riverside Training Center.

Tricks are overrated. Treats, please.

Hello Ember, and welcome to Subeta. I'm sure you'll have a great time, and if you need any help be sure to ask.

You can typically find map pieces by random just going around the site, otherwise you can buy them from the usershops. You can also find minions, small amounts of pure sP, challengers for the battle coliseum, some of which are tied to certain pages, and other events.

The site has changed for the better quite a lot since I joined up 12 years ago. If you have an interest in battling, I really recommend you start building a battle-pet, as Subeta hosts regular site-wide holidays and less often major events that include opponents ranging from the easy difficulty up to every-battler-chipping-away-at-once. An updated battle guide can be found here if that sounds appealing, if not, there are still a lot of things you can invest in.

If you haven't seen it already, this thread offers stuff to do. In particular you should use the Bathhouse Pools everyday to start accumulating some of the rarer currencies over repeated visits. You'll get mostly common stuff at first and once a cycle completes and loops over again, but you can net free CSC(Cash Shop Credits) at some intervals of successive visits, and CSC is a big part of the economy. We're due for another CSC Bonus Weekend soon that will net you an additional amount of credits on top of the base and standard bonus if you're interested.

The Ruffie Raffle allows you to get one of the pet dolls for your wardrobe once a day. You can try the Crypts and the Ice Fields once per hour.

If you enjoy making Human Avatars, you should check out the HA Contest and Games subforum.

And if you'd like to know more about certain items, or pet species and the colors, try checking on SubetaLodge.

and , thanks for hollering back at me!

-I had no idea about the bath house and currency or the subeta lodge--some of the other stuff I've figured out by using the site. I'm working on training a pet right now; I generally have a feeling that once I unlock some of the unlockables, the site as a whole will get a little less confusing. I like doing the quests, so it's good to know it'll net me some swag. :D

Thanks again for the welcome--I don't want to repeat myself too many times, so I won't say this again, but rest assured I'm reading and appreciating. :3

I do have a question--is there any kind of info about what kind of food pets like, or is it random?

I don't really feed my pets anymore...you don't need to feed them unless you're battling. So I never really figured that out. I would assume it's random.

their response to foods is just random flavor text, they'll eat whatever you give them; they have to if you want to work on the gourmand achievement p:

also, one thing you should for-sure do is work on your sarah's quests achievement -- they're going to change the accessibility for her quests at some point so it's best to get it out of the way as soon as possible, even if you're not sure you want to collect lots of achievements.

and if you haven't done this already, you put your omen island map together over here! that way you have the full roster of questers available to you, so you can always finish shinwa's quests c:

Haha, good to know; I've been feeling really bad about my pets not liking whatever I feed them. I SWEAR I'M NOT TRYING TO POISON YOU, DARLINGS. :(

I seem to have already missed the window for Sarah's quests by obsessively playing Caliph's Tomb....whoops. But thank you for your input!

I got another piece of map yesterday unexpectedly. It's only three so far total, but it's exciting. :D

so what is Santana w Rob Thomas "Smooth" colored like? How about any of Handel's Water Music?

Here's my what I wish I knew advice: You can buy INT with Mystic Spindles experience points, but the cost goes up fast the more intelligent your pet gets. If you like this game then it's better to get those INT points while they are still cheap and you haven't read any books to your pet(s) yet. INT powers your pets' scroll abilities and while your pet is at lower levels they can battle quite nicely without scrolls, you will slap yourself later if you discover you are really into battling and now need a ton more INT than you have.

There's been several folks in here who love battling, and I gotta say that battling is a VERY expensive little side hobby. Getting your pet strong enough to fight like they talk about will cost you a chunk of time and sP. Me I like battling in the Subeta system so I would do it anyways, but if you don't it's worth it from a costs point of view to just save your sP buy the loot drops/site event battling specific items from someone else.

Oh man, thank you for these questions. 8D They're fun to answer.

Keep in mind I think this is different from person to person, but for me: Smooth is orange, red and yellow. Suite No. 2 in D Major is actually also orange and red.

For me, generally speaking, dark corresponds to low, while light corresponds to high. Warmth/coolness are dictated by timbre, if you're familiar with the term (if you're not, it just refers to the quality of the sound as opposed to the frequency--range is what notes the instrument can hit, while timbre is how it sounds when they hit them; for singing it's on a scale of bright to dark, with brighter being more nasal or towards the front of your mouth/your face, dark being further towards the back of your throat....but I'm getting carried away, sorry. XD)

Anyway, string instruments and brass are warm colors for me, while piano and some wind instruments are cooler. Cellos are a darker orangey red, while violins are bright orange to orange-yellow. But, moving on:

I am liking battling, honestly, although I do find myself getting bored hitting the darn bunching bag a zillion times with a dinky little weapon for like seven damage out of 1000 health. I'll keep this in mind, though.

Thanks for stopping by!

speaking of human voices timbre is there a noticeable color difference between contralto and contratenor? Can you tell between singers who force out the high notes like Barbra Streisand vs Pat Benatar who really does have the range?

What about weirdo instruments like kalimba, didgeridoo or steel drums can you predict approximate colors for those or are they a surprise?

Yes, actually! I have absolute pitch (which is why I'm a synesthete--there's a correlation although afaik nobody knows why) and I'm a singer myself, so this is my wheelhouse/I spend more time studying voice than any other kind of music. In general, I've noticed that a contralto will usually sound brighter to my ear than a countertenor.

Nearly everyone I've heard has a pretty unique vocal color, although some people are in the same family as others ("warm" colors corresponding to bright timbres and vice versa). I'm what they call a lyric coloratura soprano, with a timbre somewhere between dark and bright, and my voice is varying shades of royal blue to periwinkle.

I can definitely hear when someone is straining or singing out of their range, but I'm not sure how or if that affects my synesthesia--if I had to guess, I'd say it's more of a textural difference than a shade/hue difference. (I occasionally get texture along with color, for example velvet/plush, smooth silk, sandpaper, etc.)

Digdgeridoo is a rusty brown, while a marimba is blue!

Most drums seem to be blue, for some reason. Not sure at all why.
