Do pets of users that havent logged in in ages ever get given a second chance to be adopted? I noticed you can obtain a username after a long period of time and i was wondering if it works in a similar way with a pet or petname
Accounts are not deleted anymore, so the pets themselves are stuck in limbo.
Usernames and pet names are both available after a year of inactivity. The pets themselves still stay on the inactive account, but the names are made available.

How do i get the available name even though the pet is still there in limbo? Do i just go to adopt another pet, use that name, and then once i do, the original one on the unused account disappears?
you can look at the petpage of the pet and there will be an announcement on the top saying the name is available, or if it's sometime soon it will say when it will become available (usually, although there's a glitch that can make it available a day early.
Getting the name' either involves creating a new pet with that name, or using the change name feature on a pet you already own.
Like I said, the pet does not disappear, the pet itself remains. It gets renamed by its original name-string plus some random numbers and if the owner comes back they get a free name change.
You can either change the name on existing pet, or create a new pet with that name to get the name. The inactive account's pet is automatically renamed to indicate that the name was taken.
- If a pet's name is available it should say so when you view the pet's profile.
"This pet belongs to an inactive account! You can create a new pet, or change a pet name to this name!"
