After seeing the talk of all the stuff going on with Sarah's sP requirements and such([Topic=875726]), it makes me wonder about the spirit versus the actual function of certain achievements, the ones I'll point to as an example are Wardrobe ones. Are achievements meant to be permanent and represent something Achieved in the past; or is it against the spirit to do something like buy up a bunch of clothing belonging to a certain achievement, getting that achievement, and then removing it from the wardrobe and selling it back? Basically are item-owning achievements meant to be forever, or are they only supposed to remain as long as you retain the ownership of the items?
Has this been touched upon in past threads before? Or have there been any unspoken rules about how it's supposed to work? What's the spirit of the achievements? My personal guess was that once Achieved, forever Earned; but I'd like to make sure I'm not going against the spirit of those achievements.
My apologies if I did an awkward job explaining. xP
- Once you get the achievement, it's yours to keep. I know people have been borrowing Subeautique sets for achievements since those were first released years ago, and staff has never said anything against it.

I mean, the Borrowing and Lending thread has existed forever, and its op is the achievements forum mini-mod so that seems like a pretty strong endorsement to me.
I remember way back in the past (years and years ago), Keith actually was considering making the clothing achievements disappear/uncheck if you got rid of the clothing set from your wardrobe, but thankfully nothing came from that idea. I wonder how people would react if video game companies went with that system for their achievements. I'd imagine there would be a lot of uproar about it.
Unless staff officially declares otherwise, achievements are what you make of them. If you want to get them the "legit" way - buy and keep the wearables in your wardrobe, go ahead. If you want to take shortcuts and borrow a set for collateral, then return it and get your collateral back once you're done, go ahead. Basically, as long as you don't do anything explicitly against the rules to get the achievements (multiaccounting for the sake of getting the "only owns one pet" achievement, for example), you're good.
The Sarah quest thing is out of the blue and they're probably still discussing how to best handle it without cutting a lot of people short.
Thanks for the info.
I didn't take the borrowing/lending threads into account before, so I suppose it's a good enough sign that temporary ownership is achievement enough for achievements. xP
In terms of the "spirit" of item ownership achievements. There's also the issue of buying the necessary items, using them for a while, then getting tired of them, and selling at that point.
Did you achieve the "spirit" and should you then lose the achievement if you lose interest in the item(s)? Should you be doomed to retain items you no longer like to save your achievements?
Now, personally, I'm a hoarder, I love having more than 22,400 things in my wardrobe. Organizing into drawers and otherwise playing around with my closet is fun. But others may not have the inclination or time to do that and need to get rid of stuff as they get their achievements so they can have a manageable wardrobe.
So even if the spirit behind item achievements was permanent ownership, its just not practical. There are too many of that kind of achievement.
I think borrowing for achievements is every much as "legit" as buying the items and then keeping or selling them. Either way you've made an effort, done work, to earn that achievement.
