So my fiance and I just booked our honeymoon today! We will be going to Disney World because neither of us have been before and this seemed like a great opportunity to go! We are so relieved because we thought we screwed ourselves over by waiting too long.
Putting this next part in a spoiler just because it's about our woes planning this honeymoon, but not totally necessary to read lol.
SPOILER (click to toggle)
So we are getting married September 30th and was initially hoping the honeymoon would be the first week of October. However, when looking into the value and moderate resorts yesterday, everything was booked. Not only for that week, but for all of October, November, and part (if not all) of December. Remaining options were $300+ a night and since we were planning on staying for a week, that would be way too expensive for us. I pulled it up again today, and thankfully a value resort opened for the second week of October and two value resorts opened for the third week. I texted my fiance about it and when he responded an hour later (we were at work) the first option booked. So naturally we freaked out and immediately attempted to get one of the value resorts for the third week of October, and we got it booked. Not only we are excited about getting to go to Disney World, we are relieved that we found an affordable (in Disney World terms) place to stay. I mean I never go on vacations, let alone Disney World, so I had no idea something like this had to be planned way in advance, oops. I should also mention that we were trying to get a resort within Disney World because I've had friends go who got a hotel just outside of Disney World, but had to battle traffic into the park every day and they wished they just got a resort inside the park lol.
We actually have been to a Disney park before, but not the one in Orlando, FL. We went to Disney Land in CA (which for us is actually on the other side of the U.S. and further than Disney World, funny enough!) Basically my fiance was in L.A. for work for three weeks and was allowed to fly someone out to him for a weekend. He flew me out and we decided "Shoot let's go to Disney Land!" and we went for a day. We didn't get to do everything we wanted to do because of time constraint. However, Disney World will be fun since we've never been (and he's never been to Florida before!) and because this time, we'll have 7 days to devote to Disney World rather than only 1 day.
So has anyone been to a Disney park before? Share your experiences and stories! And shoot, we are just winging it at the moment. If you've been to Disney World, feel free to drop some suggestions of what to do! I'm all ears!
Sounds awesome! I wish you a wonderful time there!
I have never been to a Disney Park, the closest one for me would be in France but financially that's just not an option.
First of all, congrats! ^^ Disney World is so amazing. I went year before last on Black Friday, and it was paaaacked. We were hoping people would be shopping or in food comas but no such luck lol we spent literally three hours in line for Space Mountain. (Worth it!) I also only had one day but man I am dying so hard to go back.
People say to go around counter-clockwise cause most people go clockwise so you might sneak in some shorter lines. I didn't learn that little trick till after we went though. Be prepared to pay a LOT for food. Bring your cell charger. That's my biggest regret; I didn't bring mine and my phone died in the middle of the fireworks show. I still managed to take a billion and one pictures though so all good.
Anyway we got there right at opening so traffic wasn't too terrible, and we stayed till an hour before close and again, most people had cleared out so it wasn't bad. If I think about it later today, I may upload some of the pics I took.
Congratulations! I've been twice, once as a child with my family and once with my friends during a spring break in college.
Tips: [li] Wake up early and be there when it opens! Get the most out of your time there. [li] Remember practical things like wearing comfortable shoes and sunscreen; bringing sunglasses and/or a hat, maybe a light hoodie or something for rain, Tums; staying hydrated; etc. [li] You may want to wear a bathing suit under your clothes or bring a change if you decide to go on any water rides. Maybe a disposable poncho? Plan ahead in anticipation. [li] As mentioned, bring lots of money. Food is expensive! [li] I would actually bring a real camera since you'll be there on honeymoon. [li] I think it's smart to do one park per day, and then two once you've gone through them all. In order of importance imo: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios.
Notes: [li] It's a Small World, Space Mountain, and Splash Mountain are must-do classics imo. [li] Some of my favorite rides are Peter Pan’s Flight and Animal Kingdom's Kali River Rapids. [li] The Disney World Monorail is a big deal. [li] Make reservations now. Notable places to eat are Be Our Guest, Downtown Disney restaurants, and Epcot restaurants imo. Read reviews! There are tons of Disney blogs in general, but Disney foodie blogs are a thing. [li] When you're entering the park, mention that it's your first time there and that you're on honeymoon. You and your husband will get buttons for both things. Disney staff will give you VIP treatment if they know you're honeymooning! [li] Definitely mention that you're honeymooners if you want to see parades and fireworks from special areas. [li] You might want to get shirts to commemorate the trip and wear in the park.

Thank you! Oh gosh, I can only imagine. I've been blessed with some financial support by my mom. My parents often go on vacations and leave me home to watch my brother (he has autism; pretty severe because he's nonverbal, very routine-based and is incredibly dependent on people). So since I don't get to normally tag along, she said she'd help me pay for a vacation once I graduated college. I haven't been on said vacation yet so she said she'd put the money she was going to give me towards the honeymoon instead so that's been a huge help towards the resort.
Thank you! It's crazy how you expect it to be rather mild on a certain day (and still a weekday at that) but then it's like, lol nope. People get so hyped over eating good food on Thanksgiving and then Black Friday shopping so I would've thought the same too! Bummer that you couldn't stay for more than just one day! That's how we felt at Disney Land. We would've loved to go to the Adventure Park or whatever the second type of park is.
Never heard about the counter-clockwise thing myself but I'll keep that in mind! We are most definitely expecting to be paying tons of money on food. I'm sure it's a bunch of overpriced food with it being a theme park lol. That's a good call! I recently bought a new phone so fortunately my battery isn't dead by like, noon anymore haha but it would be nice to charge up if the opportunity permits. I'm expecting to be taking a stupid amount of pictures (especially with it being close to Halloween at that time!)
Those are great tips, thank you! We aren't sure if we're going to be doing anything at the water park/water related but I may bring a swim suit just to be on the safe side. Otherwise we definitely plan on doing a park a day! We'll have a couple days leftover to either revisit our favorite ones or something like that.
And I have definitely heard to mention like, a stupid amount of times that we are on our honeymoon for those reasons! Normally I'm more low-key than that but shoot we'll probably take every opportunity we can lol. Thank you bunches for those food suggestions! I imagine we'll try to be frugal most of the time but since we're on our honeymoon, we'd like to kind of splurge on a nice dinner at least once. I'll definitely be looking into all your suggestions and taking note of those rides, thank you!
You're very welcome. I hope you have an awesome time!
Suggestions I forgot to mention: [li] Get Fast Passes! They're free but you have to get them in advance. [li] You'll save time/money by not doing a meal plan. [li] If you reserve at either Magic Kingdom's Crystal Palace or Epcot's Rose & Crown, you can watch fireworks while you have dinner. For the latter just ask to be seated outside and reserve for the time that the fireworks are happening. [li] This seems like a good site to help you plan your nice dinner and what foods you'll want to grab in the parks in general.

- I've only been to Magic Kingdom within the last 10 years, so I don't remember much. As a kid, I went to all the Disney World parks at least one, back when tickets were very cheap for Florida residents. I'm probably the only person ever to not get ecstatic over going to Disney. :x
-It's good that you're staying in a Disney resort. It's true... traffic is AWFUL and I-4 (the main highway in the area) is under a bunch of construction. I'm not sure if this is still happening, but there was construction around Disney Springs. The last time I was in that area was a year ago. ~In general, if you don't have do, don't drive. -If you want to go on Space Mountain, go there when you first enter Magic Kingdom. When I went there last year, Space Mountain had a 5 hour wait by the afternoon and they closed the ride frequently. -If you can, bring snacks. Chips, fruits, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are good choices. You don't want to bring anything that needs refrigeration or melts. This will save a lot of money. ~Bring your own water bottles. ~On this note, there'll be places to buy food around Disney. Publix is one of them. There's also a Target nearby if you need stuff. ~I'm not sure about shuttle services and how that would work though. -Bring an umbrella or poncho. While late October is usually dry, it's still possible for it to suddenly rain. -If you get too hot, go in a gift shop for a few minutes if you're wandering around. It can get in the high 80's to low 90's in late October. -Be prepared to be packed into the monorails (and everywhere else).
First things first, congratulations on your upcoming wedding and honey moon! I am an employee at Disneyland and have been to Disney World twice. Once, in August of 2007, and once this January for my own honey moon. If you like Disney you are going to have THE BEST TIME. Make sure you go to any of the Guest Relations locations and get a happily ever after button! In the month of October you are going to be dealing with people who are attending for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. That is a separate ticketed event so if it is something you are interested call now and see if they have started selling their tickets yet, or if they're going to start next month (they usually do). It means you get to go trick or treating, meet characters that are rarely out, and get special entertainment! THEY HAVE A HOCUS POCUS SHOW. Make sure you set up your magic bands and plan accordingly, but know that when your 60 days hit and you can book them you can't set up in park fast passes until your last pre-booked time has run out!
I never realized the Fast Passes could be free. I'm glad you brought that to my attention to look into, thanks! Is there a difference between fast passes and...whatever those MagicBands are? Or is the band to verify you have access to fast passes lol xD I need to look into it. And I'll definitely check out that blog and those suggestions! The dinner+fireworks combo sounds like a ton of fun. I also wouldn't have imagined that the meal plan thing is more of a hassle than helpful.
Aha that's okay! My fiance and I just really wanted to go to Disney World at least once. It'll be so much cheaper with just us vs. whenever we have kids too, lol.
And I appreciate the reassurance about getting a Disney resort! Ugh, traffic D: Plus I just saw that there's a shuttle/bus that will pick you up from the airport so that'll save us money on an Uber. We definitely don't plan on driving! We're also at that age/point where we can't go on ride after ride anymore lol I need a break for my stomach now xD Granted the lines will be much longer than my local amusement park of course and that may help. But I do get dehydrated pretty easily so I plan on practically always having water by my side and cooling off when I get the chance. Thank you bunches for all your suggestions and advice!
Thank you!! If you don't mind me asking, what do you do at Disneyland? Do you enjoy it or is kind of...mehh as an employee? I know everyone has their own opinions lol.
I've heard about the happily ever button but wasn't sure where to get them, so big thanks! I'll make note of that so I'll remember. Yeaaa I knew they'd have some sort of Halloween event going on. I'll look into it to see if it's something we'd be interested in doing or not (but mostly depending on expenses lol). That Hocus Pocus Show sounds super tempting though. Admittedly I don't know much about the Magic Bands but I'm going to look into them today!
You can even call and let the hotel you're staying at know you'll be there for your honey moon. They may be able to make a little magic for you but they can definitely get you set up with various buttons!
I work in Guest Relations at Disneyland! It is a very difficult position as we are extreme customer service and people are usually yelling at as or accusing us of ruining their day/vacation/child's birthday/life when really we're just there to help them solve their problems. I have had some very cruel things said to me, but at the end of the day it is my job to handle those situations. I love working for Disney as it feels like you're a part of a special club, are upholding Walt's legacy, and keeping his dreams alive. It is certainly not for every one as we put up with an awful lot of negative things and it can really take a toll on a person. Many forget that we are people too and have our own problems and expect pixie dust 100000000% of the time, which is just not possible.
I hadn't thought about that. I'll consider doing that as well!
And gosh, I'm sorry to hear about that :/ It's a shame really that people get so impatient and angry so easily, especially when you're doing everything that you can to help! Not to mention with it being like, the happiest place on Earth I mean come on people xD I'm glad to hear that you still enjoy working for Disney despite those bad days! No where is perfect for work, unfortunately. It would be a really cool thing to be able to say that you work for Disney! My fiance and I really enjoyed Disneyland when we went this past October. We definitely wish we could've stayed for at least another day or two but it was pretty dang magical nonetheless!
That's my dream honeymoon! That's a nice and affordable choice. Most tips were given already but definitely get the "happily ever after" button and the bride Mickey ears if you can and if they are your style? (you probably have seen them already). Bring a water bottle. I have no idea if the water is good but I regretted not bringing mine in California. The sheer amount of money I've spent in water bottle when I could have had just filled them with the fountains :c !
The passes and the bands are the same thing. Yeah, my coworker who went recently said the meal plan just ends up being too much food, and thus too much time/money spent. Also, I think the Food & Wine Festival will be going on at Epcot while you're there. c:

For real though, I'm not much of a sit on a beach kind of girl lol. I was glad my fiance was in the same boat when I suggested Disney World a while ago. The Mickey ears!! Yaaaas we actually found those while we were at Disneyland and bought both the groom and bride ears! We also found a "Happily Ever After" frame that has both those ears engraved on either side of the phrase, so we're planning on displaying those at the wedding :) We'll definitely get the button on our honeymoon though!
No kidding. Any sort of food or beverage are always expensive at amusement parks lol. I'll either bring a simple water bottle or a tumblr that I had bought from Disneyland. Thank you so much!
Oh gotcha! Thanks for the clarification. Also, I don't tend to eat a ton of food (especially when at an amusement park) so that's a helpful bit of info! Ooo I'll look into that!
The passes are included in the price of park admission and are loaded onto the bands which are included with your Disney resort reservation, to be more specific. I'm more grab and go with theme park eating too. Epcot is the best for that. Temperature-wise, October in Orlando will be much nicer than dealing with the summer heat!

You're going to have an awesome time! I think It's a Small World got torn down a couple years ago (we saw farewell signs when I went in 2010), but they might have decided to keep it. So it's definitely worth checking into.
I'm not sure how into Avatar (the blue people) you are, but they JUST opened a new section in Animal Kingdom just for that! It looks super cool and like it could be a lot of fun. My favorite park is Animal Kingdom, and both times I went to Disney we went there first. There's a ride in Magic Kingdom that deals with Buzz Lightyear (can't remember the name), but it's super fun since you go around shooting at things with a laser beam and whoever gets the most points in your car, wins. It's lovely to go on since it's indoors and when I went the lines weren't terrible.
I highly recommend you do some of the character meals. I regret not doing any of those the two times I went, and I'm not sure if I'll ever be back soon.
Since you have a couple days that don't need to be park-related, I highly suggest you go to Universal Studios (which is about an hour or so away from Disney) for a day and try out some of their rides! If you're into Harry Potter, then you can spend some time at HP World.
Congrats! We went to Disney World on our honeymoon as well, back in 2010 :P We plan on trying to go again for our anniversary in 2020, so we'll see.
When we went, my parents paid for a horse drawn carriage ride at the Port Orleans Resort, which I really recommend. It was awesome!
I love the Magic Kingdom, it has to be my favorite park. There's just so much magic there.
It looks like you have plenty of awesome tips. :) Have fun!
Honestly the summer heat is part of the reason why I didn't want a summer wedding lol. It doesn't get nearly as hot where I live compared to Florida, but it can still get to the upper 80's/low-to-mid 90's and that's just not my cup of tea. I have been to Florida in summer though and my goodness does it get hot xD Oh okay I understand! And I've heard a lot of good things about Epcot in general.
I'm not like a total huge fan of Avatar or anything, but I did really enjoy the movie and we are both excited about Pandora opening up this year! (I think it was in May when it officially did?) But we do plan on checking that out for sure. It looks really cool. I'm super excited about Animal Kingdom in general. Also, that Buzz Lightyear ride sounds super similar to a ride we've got at my local amusement park that I really enjoy so we'll have to do that!
Well, we bought a 7-day ticket for Disney World so we'll still remain in the park those last few days. I'm expecting long lines and whatnot so we'll probably revisit the parks where we didn't get to do everything we wanted to do (or would like to do again). If it wasn't for that, I'd definitely consider Universal Studios. I would've loved to go.
Thank you :) Oh that would be a super neat 10-year anniversary! I hope it works out! The horse drawn carriage does sound pretty neat. I've seen them and all but have never been on a carriage ride. I'll check it out. Magic Kingdom looks pretty similar to the Disneyland park that we went to that one day, but we're still excited to check it out (I still imagine it's going to be larger though!) There's so much magic and nostalgia there!
My husband did Disney for our honeymoon! We ended up getting the 4 day with park hopper option so that way if it started to get to crowded at one park we could just hop on one of the buses and go to another. Make sure you have sunscreen and put it on often. I didn't put it on as often and did get a little burn. Also drink plenty of water.
We got the bride and groom hats and we got congratulated frequently. Also when you go to Epcot go to the tequila bar there and ask for the Pepe special. Its not on the menu but holy cow was it good. just a fair warning I at least felt buzzed till Japan.
