Hey hey lovely peoples!
So, I have a million new pets and need a little bit of help on one of these. The character is the guardian of the Afterlife and as such he needs to know ALL the standard afterlife rituals from any and all religions (past and present)...
Does anyone know any of the more unusual rituals?
- any of my pet loving friends got any ideas?
Check out Dorin's TC. He has some death related items in there (mostly bones and stuff). Also... what about the Shaman items? There might be some stuff in there that could relate :) I'll look around for you too.
Some ones I know: -just being buried in dirt (tombstone items, caskets, coffins) -buried at sea (ocean items) -cremation (ashes, jars) -sky burial (body is placed on top of mountain to be disposed of naturally: weather elements or animals consuming it) -pyre (fire items) -mummification (mummy items) -organ donation (organ items, for people who donate their bodies to science)
some other ideas: -sugar skulls (mexico) -give the dead coins on their mouth to pay to cross the river styx in the underworld, -sacrificial items or shrines, flowers, candles, photos
hope this helps!
that sounds like a really neat idea :D All I could think of was the burial mounds (barrows) from the Bronze Age & what they're claiming was done at Stonehenge when it was built (the bodies sent down the river on a boat before being added to the barrows)

You could give Sariel's TC a look, and maybe Hexer's as well, since they're both involved with life/death shenanigans in their own ways. Sariel's maybe a little closer to the point, but Hexer's got a wider variety of items.
Filipino traditions - there are several here, but some involve being buried at the entrance to the home or the kitchen, and sometimes in a tree that is picked out specifically by the dying person or family. They also have hanging coffins and a few other things I forget. Endocannibalism - practiced mainly in isolated tribes in South America. Technically outlawed in most places, but still practiced today. Fantasy Coffins - practiced in Ghana, where their coffins are built special to represent who they were in life. anything from a football to a cow could be built. Turning of the Bones / Famadihana - practiced in madagascar, they dig up their dead once a year to re-dress them and have a small celebration Tana Torjana - practiced in eastern Indonesia. Funeral celebrations can last weeks. Until a sacrificial waterbuffalo is slaughtered to taken them to the afterlife, the family member is kept in a special room and considered "sleeping" and is cared for as if they were alive.
There's quite a few more I'm forgetting because it's late. Hit me up if you want more, though. I'm a mortician so I had to learn a lot of practices, even if they never come up here. Also check out my pet Amort, she has quite a few TC items you might be interested in.
There's this crazy shit, and here's some certainly less crazy shit.
Out of all that, you'll likely have the easiest time finding things that would relate more to Pagan traditions, aside from what the others have already mentioned. :>
I'll keep looking, though, because now I'm incredibly curious.
