I just noticed this from coming back. Is there a reason for this? It's kind of a weird thing since I feel like I am constantly feeding my pet in order to battle it.

You can, it just says that the pet has eaten it in case you are working on the gourmand achievement.

By the way, if you're only feeding your pet for battling (and you're not working for the gourmand achievement), I'd suggest popping your battle pet in the resort. Then you don't have to worry about feeding, as the resort keeps pets fully fed and happy ^^

Rathskeller Inn works the same way.
