How do you feel about language integration in schools? I've never heard of this before. If this means adding multiple languages in all the curriculum, then I don't like it. I think it's easier to learn everything in one language so it's less confusing. Having separate classes to learn different languages should always be an option though.

If you can please explain your thoughts? I grew up in an English and Spanish speaking household. While I speak mainly English, I can speak a bit of Spanish and I understand it pretty well.

I live in Orlando. A lot of people only speak Spanish. It does bother me, because a lot of them, especially the older ones, don't even bother to learn English. They expect everyone around them to learn Spanish and for businesses to use mainly Spanish. In the case of parents, some expect their kids to be their personal translators. (I've seen this within my mother's side of the family.) Learning Spanish is a great skill to have and should be done where I live, but I feel like it's unfair for people who lived here all their lives to have to learn Spanish if people who move here won't learn English. I would much rather have someone have broken English and try their best than to not try at all.

With tourists, the trend is people from around the world learn some English so they can communicate when buying things. The only ones that don't are Spanish or Portuguese speakers. (We have a lot of Brazilian tourists.)

With learning one language, it depends on where you live. If everything and everyone around you only speak English, then one language is fine. If you live in a multi-language area like I do, it's best to learn at least two of the languages used.

I'm against having a national language, because the U.S. is supposed to be welcoming to various cultures. But, since English is the main language used here, I think people should learn a bit of English if they move here.

Gender? F

Ethinicity? half Dutch half indonesian

Did you grow up in a multilingual household? 1.) Yes, forgot the indonesian language for 75% now though

Do you have an accent? 2.) No, not when I talk my mother language(Dutch)

What do you think of people who speak only 1 language? 1.) Is it a bad thing

What do you think about people who don’t speak Dutch? 1.) A problem

Has your language or lack of second language affected your ability to work? 2.) No

(If applicable) Have you experienced prejudice due to your dialect/accent? Not applicable

How do you feel about tourists coming here that don’t speak Dutch vs. people who live here and don’t? 2.) I don’t mind tourist and I do mind people living here

Would you prefer a mix of languages or that everyone spoke Dutch? Only Dutch? 1.) Prefer mixed language and that they spoke Dutch too

Should the Netherlands. be “Dutch only”? 2.) No

How do you feel about language integration in schools? In the netherlands it's done well, we get English and France from the beginning, later we get German, and if we want to we can also pick Spanish. (when I was in high school, maybe now they can also choose mandarin, don't know this)

If you can please explain your thoughts? Globalisation is more and more important, helps a lot if you can at least speak English next to Dutch. Easier to get jobs etc.

SPOILER (click to toggle) Age? 27.

Gender? Nb.

Ethinicity? White, if you wanna go that route.

Did you grow up in a multilingual household? 1.) Yes - partially. Knowledge of French, Spanish, Italian, Latin and German in addition to English as a first language. 2.) No

Do you have an accent? 1.) Yes - American Midatlantic. 2.) No

What do you think of people who speak only 1 language? 1.) Is it a bad thing - rather limited view on the world. 2.) Is it a good thing 3.) I'm indifferent

What do you think about people who don’t speak English? 1.) A problem 2.) Not an issue 3.) I'm indifferent. Mostly. I try, I'd like it to be a two way street.

Has your language or lack of second language affected your ability to work? 1.) Yes. 2.) No 3.) Maybe

(If applicable) Have you experienced prejudice due to your dialect/accent? 1.) Yes 2.) Sometimes - part of my family is from West Virginia, need I say more? I'm just glad I didn't inherit the accent. 3.) No

How do you feel about tourists coming here that don’t speak English vs. people who live here and don’t? 1.) I don’t mind tourist and I don’t mind people living here. 2.) I don’t mind tourist and I do mind people living here 3.) I do mind tourist and I do mind people living here 4.) I do mind tourist and I don’t mind people living here

Would you prefer a mix of languages or that everyone spoke English? Only English? 1.) Prefer mixed language and that they spoke English too. 2.) Prefer mix language 3.) Prefer that they only spoke English

Should the U.S. be “English only”? 1.) Yes 2.) No. 3.) Indifferent

How do you feel about language integration in schools? It should be an option, absolutely, taught from an early age in a variety larger than French or Spanish. Give kids what they're interested in for languages and they'll learn; if they want to learn Japanese or Korean because of an anime they enjoy or Italian because their grandmother speaks it, let them. Make the resources available and apply the learning to children who are proven to be more open to learning new languages.

How do you feel about tourists coming here that don’t speak English vs. people who live here and don’t? 1.) I don’t mind tourist and I don’t mind people living here -- However I feel like if I was going to live somewhere with a specific spoken language I would want to try my best to learn said language. 2.) I don’t mind tourist and I do mind people living here 3.) I do mind tourist and I do mind people living here 4.) I do mind tourist and I don’t mind people living here

How do you feel about language integration in schools? I think it's a good idea to give everyone the chance to at least learn some of the basics of a different language, should they so desire. Then if they liked it, and are determined enough they can continue learning said language. I took Spanish in high school and really quite enjoyed learning it.

How do you feel about language integration in schools? I think it would be great if students were required to take a second language in school and become familiar with it, if not proficient. With the way our world is so connected, in business, on the internet, etc., it would be a good thing to know at least two, if not more, languages.

If you can please explain your thoughts? I only know English myself, with a few words sprinkled in here and there from other languages. I have a friend who speaks 5 different languages and I think that's amazing. I feel like those who have more than one language have a big advantage over those who only speak one, in the work place and in the world in general. I do, however, think that people who live in whatever country, should at least have a working knowledge of the main language spoken there.

How do you feel about language integration in schools? I have mixed feelings

If you can please explain your thoughts? It's kind of hard to put into words. I understand English is a very difficult language to learn but I think in order to be successful in the US, it's important to be fluent in the spoken language. I don't think English should be the official language and I don't think we should have to change our lives because there are some people who refuse to learn English. But I also think it's important to expose children to other languages so they can be more well rounded as adults because you never know what career they may choose. It's been proven that it's easier to learn another language as a child rather than an adult.

I hope that helps

35 Male. HUMAN Yes No Indifferent Indifferent Inapplicable Mix plus English NO. Integration was usually common in the schools I had gone to. For the most it was for children of Mexican immigrants, ESL and the like.

I never had to undergo that kind of course, I had learned English and Spanish concurrently. It was never a problem for me.

How do you feel about language integration in schools? I think it's a great idea.

If you can please explain your thoughts? Being multi-lingual has already proven to be good for children, and it's really not hard to teach a child two languages at the same time, they're usually pretty good at picking up both. I have a school nearby me that calls itself an International Academy mostly because they will teach your children Spanish and English at the same time, and so far it's doing great. It opens kids up to be more understanding of people and more tolerant. I wish I would have been taught another language at a young age, instead of having to try to pick it up now as an adult.
