A basic account can have 5 pets. If you have a gold account, you can have an extra 5 pets.

Then you can gain pet slots from a yearly totem, buying them at the Millionaire Center or from buying them with Cash Shop Credits.

I think all accounts start with a base 10 pet slots now. It changed a while back when they decided to do other things as a reward for having a gold account. Leashing became a GA benefit instead of a cash shop buyable at the same time.

Oh really? What is 'leashing'? And what do you mean by site-wide quest-a-thon events?

Leashing is when you see the pet's portrait under a gold account user's avatar in the forums. Pets are leashed from the drop down menu on each pet on the pets page. You can add some text to go with it too if you want.

Quest-a-thons are where the staff sets a goal for total number of quests to be completed by the deadline. Every user who participates by doing at least one quest during the event is eligible for a prize, and in the past pet shots were offered. It caused weird drama at some point, but for the life of me I don't remember how the staff dealt with it. It might have been with a tiered prize system that offered rewards based on individual participation.

They might be kind of recent, perhaps within the past couple years. I think it's how I ended up with extra pet slots as well as a couple forum titles.

I think I got most of mine from the annual totems.

A lot of people look out for pets with low ID numbers (this is determined by when they are created). That group pings a bunch of people who are interested in lower IDs :)

I see. I guess I just don't see the appeal, really. But that's cool there's a whole group.
