If you look down you might find the old version of this thread, made last year. Since then, however, my character has changed a lot; changed enough that I thought it would be worth making a new thread about it.
So. Give me your opinions. Just for reference, Michiko here belongs in the Batman: The Animated Series universe and I haven't worked out exactly when in canon things happen. Ages and timelines of events are subject to change.
[spoiler=CopyPasta'ed From Chuuni's Bio]
Name: Michiko Doherty
Codename: White Rabbit
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Current Residence: Gotham City
Job: Bioengineer, specialising in prosthetics and living aids.
Looks: Michiko is mixed race - Japanese mother, black American father - with much of her looks coming from her father's side. She has dark skin and black hair with a natural curl, usually styled shoulder-length locs; she keeps her locs tied back or inside a cloth 'bun' at back of her head. Her eyes are dark brown with gold flecks and she has a monolid. Michiko 5' 3" and 10.5 stone, though much of her weight is muscle. Her body is rectangular with wide hips and wide shoulders; her entire body is muscular with a layer of 'padding', especially on her stomach. Her bust is average. She has large brows and long eyelashes on an expressive face - she smiles widely and frowns deeply - with deep dimples. Her teeth are slightly uneven with large incisors and her left upper canine missing. There is heavy surgical scarring across the small of her back, extending up her spine to in between her shoulderblades.
Clothing: Michiko wears feminine but practical and businesslike clothing - blouses, cardigans, maxi skirts, tailored trousers, and flats. White, light blue, pastel pink, and mint green dominate her wardrobe. She accessorizes with hair clips and and bands, brooches, and necklaces (usually with a rabbit or flower theme). Michiko dislikes showing skin and will often wear gloves if she thinks she'll get her hands dirty. She wears a facemask when ill, a habit she retains from Japan.
Costume: A suit of white 'power armour' that covers her entire body. The suit made of armoured segments on top of a high-tech cloth which is full of electroactive polymers and miniaturised hydraulic engines which act as 'muscles'. The legs of the suit are built for extra strength on her legs and can absorb considerable impact. It has a full-head helmet, like a motorcycle helmet, with a light blue rectangular glass 'screen' that is an LED display; there are two 'balance modulators'/'antenna', resembling rabbit ears, where the ears would be. The suit's armoured sections are painted matte white with light blue details; the cloth between is also white. There is a well-stocked utility belt at the waist, as well as storage compartments on the arms and legs; her collapsable nightstick is clipped to her belt. Palms and soles have slip-proof padding to aid grip and absorb impact. Her helmet has a built-in gas mask, mobile comm link/cell phone, and police radio scanner. The armour itself can resist small arms fire, fire, and blades. Smells strongly of bleach.
Personality: Michiko tries very hard to be a good person and help others around her whenever possible; she does her best to have good manners at all times. She loves to give gifts to people or do them favours at any excuse, both for their joy and the good feelings it gave her. If anyone looks so much as a little teary-eyed in her presence, she will instantly be at their side to ask them what's wrong and if she can help. Michiko tries to do good for society at large and donates a lot of money to charity every year. She tries her best to on the bright side of life and to see the best in people and situations, even if - no, especially if - proven wrong. She can forgive most wrongs if given an honest apology; those who are unapologetic and never admit their wrongs will never be forgiven.
Her experiences with injustice and cruelty has given her a passion for justice, dreaming of being a hero and saving others from evildoers, wherever they may hide. She does not, however, trust the government or the police force, given her own brushes with racist police officers and those of the people around her. The GCPD have an arrest warrant out for the White Rabbit after she saved innocent citizens from the attentions of a crooked officer, making her job a lot more difficult. Her opinion on Arkham isn't flattering either, but she recognises that most doctors try their best and that they do help people. That doesn't mean that she likes them at all, of course.
She takes great pride in her intelligence and skill with technology, not only boasting about them almost constantly but attempted to teach others in her ways. Anyone who looks like they struggle with technology will be given an impromptu IT tutoring. She sees this as an act of kindness, a way to help others. Very few people are thankful for this and many can’t resist the urge to roll their eyes at her attempts at showing them the way around a computer.
Around strangers Michiko makes sure to suppress any signs of weakness and negative emotion, presenting a perfectly calm and unflappable persona to the world; she always has a smile on her face. This habit, coupled with her boasting streak, has given many people the impression that she is arrogant and egotistical - someone who thinks herself better than everyone else. Her habit of giving gifts - especially of money or expensive items - can also come across as belittling and patronising, adding to this attitude.
Despite this, however, Michiko highly enjoys the company of those she feels understand her and that she can trust. Once she truly warms to a person Michiko sheds her masks, showing her true personality: emotionally fragile with deep insecurities, very low self-esteem, and a variety of untreated mental issues. Deep down, Michiko craves attention, praise, and affection like a starving man craves food. When proved with a source of these Michiko often becomes offputtingly clingy, unknowingly violating people's boundaries. On a more positive side, she will go above and beyond to ensure that her friends are happy, even if it means putting herself in harms way if needs be.
Michiko's low self-esteem makes her very sensitive to criticism, with any negative opinions being taken to mean that the criticizer hates her. She becomes very defensive and often angry when criticised, sometimes even throwing what amounts to an adult tantrum, which she is always extremely ashamed of when she calms down. Michiko suffers from deep-seated feelings of inadequacy and self-loathing. She holds herself to very high standards; any failure, no matter how small, cuts her extremely deeply.
Unfortunately, thanks to her sheltered upbringing and solitary childhood, she has very little idea of how the world works. Michiko learnt most of what she knows about life and people from books, movies, or TV: very unreliable sources. She thinks that the world should work like it does in fiction, becoming frustrated when it doesn’t go that way or people don’t play the roles she thinks that they should. Michiko expects her exploits saving the people of Gotham from danger to be rewarded with cheers, praise, and adoration; when this is not forthcoming, she becomes both dismayed and angry. In an attempt to be perceived as a hero in equal to Batman, she has developed a habit of letting some villains stay free so that she could capture them later; hopefully in a more spectacular fashion that would wow the citizenry. Michiko knows that is an extremely selfish thing to do and is tortured with guilt, but her insecurity and nagging need for attention has won over so far.
In addition to this, Michiko suffers from nightmares and the crippling phobia of being institutionalised. Thanks to fact that machines 'speak' to her, Michiko has become convinced that she suffers from schizophrenia, but refuses to seek help as she is convinced that any doctor would order her to be sent to Arkham Asylum. She also has an obsession with cleanliness and not being dirty to the point of a mild germ phobia; she regularly scrubs her flat and armour with bleach, even adding strongly diluted bleach to her bathwater.
Past: Michiko’s father William Docherty was an engineer from Gotham City, the eldest child of a Jamaican immigrant and a black American with Irish blood, whose life's ambition was to work in the swiftly emerging world of computers. He cooperated with an established Japanese manufacturing company - whose young CEO shared his dreams and ambitions - to develop computers, import them into America, and translate programs and software into English.
Her mother Yukimaru Tomoko was the sister of William's business partner, Yukimaru Daichi. Back then she was a energetic young woman with a keen interest in technology and big business ambitions that would never come to fruition. The two fell in love almost at first sight.
Sadly, in those days there was no hope of a woman in her position becoming an inventor like she had always dreamed. So, despite her supportive husband and slightly less supportive brother, an unwilling Mrs Tomoko Docherty soon found herself thrust into the role of the housewife.
Just two months after their wedding, Tomoko fell pregnant. It was a time of joy and celebration until the sixth month of her pregnancy, when she fell ill with an infection of such severity that she lost the pregnancy. To rub salt into the wound, she was told that it was likely she'd never fall pregnant again.
Tomoko fell into a despair and along with the painkillers prescribed to her to deal with the after-effects of her illness, began to self-medicate with alcohol. This behaviour, exacerbated by her husband's frequent absences from home and the way others reacted to their marriage, continued on for three years. Then one day, Tomoko felt ill in a familiar way - a very familiar way. The doctor confirmed that she was suspecting, but the news was worse than she first thought.
She was almost three months pregnant.
Tomoko tried her best to cut out her painkiller and alcohol use once she found at the news, but it was too late. Michiko was born with damage to her central nervous system, deformed joints in her lower body, and a thankfully mild case of spinal bifida.
These collective issues meant that walking was both difficult and painful for her, forcing her to use a wheelchair or crutches if she wanted to take more than a few steps. As a toddler, doctors even told her parents that there was a very good chance she would never walk. Whilst surgeries on her spine improved her mobility to an extent, she would need to use her wheelchair or a cane for the rest of her life.
Her mother framed this as a great weakness and used as an excuse to overprotect Michiko. Desperate for company and wracked with guilt for her perceived failures, she would never let her outside of the house without a chaperone, except to attend school. She kept her daughter wrapped in cotton wool and coddled her, attended to her every whim whilst telling her dire tales of how dangerous the world outside their mansion was. Especially to young girls who aren't the same colour as everyone else and can't walk like everyone else.
When Michiko was seven years old her younger sister Momoko was born. A miracle child. A perfect, healthy daughter. From the start Momoko was the apple of both William's and Tomoko's eyes, the child that they'd hoped for so many years ago and lost.
As a child, Michiko felt ignored and unloved, like her parents vastly preferred her sister and would prefer it that she never existed. Even when she was very young, she was always aware that she didn't fit in. Her dark skin and curly hair set her apart from the other children in her school, making her a target of bullying both from students and teachers. There is, after all, a saying in Japan that the nail that sticks up will be hammered down. Her disability made even her more different, making the problem even worse.
Adding to her sense of isolation was the fact that her father was almost never at home, always at work in his Tokyo office or jetting across the world to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. So the young Michiko became an attention-seeker, craving the love and affection she thought she never got from her parents, from anyone or by any means possible. She also became enamoured with the tokusatsu superhero shows, with their courageous heroes and hideous monsters. Michiko spent countless hours alone in her room, dreaming about donning a superhero costume of her own and fighting evil.
The young Michiko found solace in academia and soon discovered that she had an excellent memory and prodigious talent for maths. She focussed intensely on her schoolwork to make up for her lack of social skills, especially in the subjects of science and electronics. In addition to being a path to success and a distraction from her loneliness, Michiko also saw her studies as a way to connect with her father and his skill with computers.
She soon found that understanding machines was as easy and automatic to her as breathing. They seemed to react to her touch with glee and she always knew how to fix a broken device without being taught how, her fingers never going wrong. Her father found out about her talent when he caught her disassembling one of his office computers and putting it back together again. When he got over his shock, and much to Michiko's intense joy, he began to support her talent. Her father was finally proud of her.
As she grew up and saw more of the world, Michiko saw disabled people like herself struggling to survive and being treated horribly by society; she decided that when she was older she use her technical skills to create devices and life aids for disabled people so they could have easier lives and do more.
When she was 17, Michiko elected to attend at Gotham University, as it was her father’s birthplace and she had family there, and studied Biomedical Engineering before moving on to gain a Master of Engineering. Her father gave her his blessing and the University a sizable donation, both as a gift and as a warning. Despite the mocking and disbelieving attitudes of her peers - and some of her teachers - Michiko excelled at her studies and passed with flying colours, even if she had nothing resembling a social life and often felt extremely lonely.
Michiko decided to stay in Gotham and became a US citizen at this point. During her time at university, she applied for an internship in Wayne Industries and was placed in WayneTech, the same department as Jervis Tetch; she developed a keen interest in his experiments, hoping to adapt them for her own use. Although they never become close, Michiko considered Jervis a friend, despite their marked age gap and very different pasts. He for one welcomed her input and belief in a project others would mock, though he found her personality rather overbearing. Michiko managed to befriend to Alice Pleasance and the two women became much better friends, so she took Jervis' breakdown and kidnapping of Alice extremely hard.
When living in Gotham she became inspired by reading news reports of heroes like Batman, Superman, and the Justice League, deciding that she should use her own talents to become a superhero herself to stop more people suffering. To this end she adapted an experimental exoskeleton suit that she developed as a mobility aid, making it far stronger and tougher. She also bought military surplus equipment and variety of gadgets to stock her utility belt, while starting a specially designed fitness regime to prepare her body.
Michiko went out on her first crime fighting trip just three months later at the age of 27, with mixed results. Though she was successful in many ways, her inexperienced showed; she almost got herself and the ones she was trying to save killed on multiple occasions, forcin
