I keep feeding my pets like crazy every day, is this really necessary? It seems to be very costly and time consuming... :/

There's no penalty ordinarily. The only time it matters is in battling. If you want to battle with a pet, it needs to be fed and happy.

If you want, you can put them in the resort in Veta lake and it'll keep them fed and happy for up to 28 days at a time for really cheap.

You can also put your pet in Rathskeller Inn for up to 31 days. You'll need to complete all 9 Uncharted Land Map Piece to visit Port Plunder first.

From a different perspective, the hunger meter is a limiter. There's an achievement for having a pet eat a certain number of unique food items, but since they won't eat anything after their hunger meter is full, it takes a pretty long time to feed them thousands of items.

Ask away (: My pet is displayed there because I have a Gold Account. With a GA, you get the option to "Leash" a pet, and add a little description under it.
