So I work at a farm supply store called Orcheln and every year we have "Chick Days." Chick Days is the special time of year when we sell baby chickens for pets, meat production, and egg production. We even get bucklings and baby turkeys later on as well rabbits as often as possible. I just started at Orcheln in December, so this is my first Chick Days actually working. I don't know much about chickens as I have never owned any and my parents never cared for them. I'm easily attached to any animal I see though, so this is a blast for me. Just before Chick Days started I was promoted to support manager, so I haven't been able to interact too much with the chicks, other than quickly glancing for a sick, injured, or dead one.
Today I noticed one pen extremely filthy, I was a little confused as they are to be cleaned daily. So just before I clocked back in from my lunch break I asked the manger I was closing with if I could clean then pens early. Being a huge animal lover I hate to see any animal living in fith after all. They explained how those were the meat production birds and how they eat ALOT and well you can probably guess. They get cleaned as much as the others, they just get dirtier faster. The manger allowed me to clean the pens earlier than usual and of course I was excited. Everyone was laughing and joking how "fun" that job could be, my fellow employees were all glad it wasn't them. But me? I was having the time of my life! Picking each chick up, placing it gently in a box... Just letting them stand and walk off my hand (onto the box of course, no chicks fell). Removing all the dirty bedding and old food and water. Giving the chicks all fresh clean everything. It was a dirty job, but it was so fun!
I watched a chick pick up a piece of pine shaving twice his size, and just run around the pen as fast as his little legs could go. Another found some Styrofoam and just taunted the others because he was sooooo cool with what he found. Of course I had to put an end to that, but he did put up a fight. Lol And at the end of the day after I had finished everything they were so quiet. The manger I closed with was astonished by how quiet the chicks were. And a swear one section wasn't even peeping; just happily sleeping and eating and drinking.
I never had such a great day at work. Does anybody else have a story they just HAVE to share?
The best job I ever had was in an onion packing racket. It was a casual thing for me at the time. I went up out of curiosity, and they hired me on the spot. I recall it was because they were preferring male workers over women, for the floor positions. Sure the pace was a least hectic, and some things were not allowed (radios). But I just loved the fact that this required little to no talking (too much noise from the machines) . Hell, I lost a significant amount of weight. The only bad days were when on two occasions we were told there would be no breaks, on account of the peak harvests.
The one downer was the owner died before the next season could begin, and the family decided to pack up.
