Some of you may know I work at an assisted living place, where many of the residents have alzheimer's or dementia. Nearly every single resident can't properly care for themselves, which is why they're living here. The care staff who work here are here to care for the residents, hence the 'care' part of their title. I am not care staff myself - I'm a concierge/receptionist. My job is to sit at the front desk, stop people from going out the doors, unlock the doors for those who need to come in/out, answer phones, and other general office stuff. I'm not a babysitter or a nurse, not in the slightest. And that brings us to the problem.
Care staff and dining room staff are constantly wheeling residents up here and leaving them here. Just letting them sit. I assume because they don't want to deal with them. And I get it, I do, this job is hard, but here's the thing - this is your fucking job, you knew what it was when you applied, you knew when you accepted the position, you knew when you came in to work. You haven't a single goddamned excuse for not doing your job. Being tired is not an excuse, being a lazy bitch is not an excuse. Get your ass up and do what you're here for, or so help me, I will have a part in your firing.
Some of these residents, when they're left to their own devices, will try to get up out of their wheelchairs and try to walk. Not a good idea when your muscle tone is basically that of a baby. So then they fall, because God forbid care staff responds when I call them on the walkie, that someone needs help. And when someone falls, a doctor has to be called in, or they have to get transported to the ER, and everyone has to fill out an incident report, and corporate needs to be notified, and it's basically a huge shit storm. If they're not a fall risk, some of them who are left up here try to go out the door. Or they start grabbing things and hoarding them. Or they start a giant commotion, screaming and carrying on, while the care staff runs the other way down the hall.
And then. And fucking then, these care staff bitches are all "Well why didn't you keep her from falling?" or "Why didn't you stop him from throwing a fit?" BECAUSE I HAVE MY OWN FUCKING JOB TO DO AND IT'S NOT YOURS. YOUR fucking job is to take CARE of people, MINE is to do MY job. I know for a fact that they hide in the stairwells or in certain rooms, where there are no cameras. I know they pretend their walkies mysteriously don't work, even when they've tested fine. I know they pretend to 'need' smoke breaks, when they don't even smoke. They slack off so fucking much, they spend more time doing that than their actual jobs. I feel like a snitch or a whiner, because I'm constantly reporting people to their boss (and my boss, who is head over all of us). It's getting ridiculous.
So what shit do you have to deal with at your job?
Wow. I can understand slacking off at your job, but when youre a caretaker, thats AWFUL. Theyre caring for real live people!!! Unaccpetable. It sucks that you have to deal with it and report it, but at least these people will get the care they need.
Im going to be real honest: at my job, sometimes i have to go do bathroom checks (even though its not in my job description!) Sometimes i walk into the bathroom, see the largest piece of turd ive ever laid eyes on, and walk out. Im not paid enough to deal with that lol.
What annoys me is that people like those mentioned here put the whole care giver job under a bad light, making all of us look like egoistic and sadistic monsters. I know that I am doing my very best at my job and that I love my residents but that I just cannot take care of 30+ people at the same time. So, if I am in room and in room someone gets up from their wheelchair and falls down this is horrible but not my fault. I wish I could but I cannot clone or copy myself and this is sth I wish others would see, as well...
And this also was the biggest issue I have to deal with at my job.
Right! I hate when the good carers get blamed for shit that is so not even close to their fault. The few good coworkers of mine always get yelled at for not being there quick enough, but Jesus God, they're not superhuman! They can't work at the speed of light - someone is always going to have to wait. And the family members, fuck, they don't realize we're all human. They expect NOW NOW NOW, but the laws of physics are like NOPE.
Wow that's awful. Jobs like that should be taken seriously and done by people with big hearts and human empathy, not some schmoe needing a paycheck. Too bad they're in short supply. I'm sorry you have to see that, it's a bummer when people who don't do their work try to pass their responsibilities off to you and there's not much you can do about it. Maybe they can establish a new rule about where they can be left unattended? :/
That's so fucking awful. :( I'm sorry your coworkers are so shitty! It's depressing thinking about how many people are working jobs like that who don't actually care about helping people and just want a paycheque. They take advantage of some of the most vulnerable people and it's disgusting.
I'm off work on medical leave atm but at my retail job it just sucked that the good workers were pushed hard to do even more and the bad workers were never properly dealt with. Some people worked there for years and just slacked off all the time but the good workers were expected to cover everywhere and do the work of like ten people. It's ridiculous. Also most people, even if they're generally decent, seem to get really awful the second they walk into a store. There's no reason to treat retail workers badly. :/ I mean I've been in stores where workers have ignored me and been lazy but the worst thing I do is complain to management or corporate. I don't go up to people and start mouthing off. I don't do that to shitty workers and I certainly wouldn't do that to good ones. :/ Also people being sexist and otherwise bigoted... fun times. Of course we're not supposed to say anything back but I did a few times because fuck it. I didn't deserve to be treated shitty for any price and certainly not for just above minimum wage.
