Hey everyone! So I'm planning on dyeing the tips of my hair. JUST IMPULSE BOUGHT THE GOODS. Thinking of going for mint green, maybe ombre black to mint green.
Last time (2 years ago..wow!) my friend dyed it, barely any teal showed up unless you shined light directly on it. We didn't leave in the lightener long enough, my hair only ended up a light brown (coming from black hair). Anddd it washed out within two weeks lol. Soo this time I'm going hard and trying to get it nearly white before coloring. APPARENTLY mint is notoriously hard to get right, so fingers crossed!
Discussion:
Have you ever dyed your hair before, either yourself or at a salon? What color(s)? Any funny/horror stories to tell? :)
You need to lighten in stages since you've got dark hair. Trying to go straight from black to near-white in one day is a great way to fry the hell out of your hair.
I've done pretty much every colour out there. Pink, purple, green, blue, orange, red. Blue is the longest lasting for me, even as it fades it just turns to green. Purple and red wash out the fastest.
I've had a mishap with my hair before, the stylist used some crazy potent stuff that stripped my hair from (natural) jet black to paper white in less than 20 minutes. My hair was gummy, stretchy, and was snapping off when I ran my fingers through it. You don't want to end up with that.
As for maintaining colour, you have to wash with cold water and try to wait as long as possible between washes. I have naturally curly hair so it doesn't get oily often, so I only have to wash my hair once a week or so.
I got my hair dyed for the first time last November or so. I'd never done it before, but my friend had dyed his hair since he was in his early teens so he knew what he was doing. It ended up being this wonderful bright teal that darkened into indigo near the ends. The first try didn't take very well (this was a different salon hair dye--it was okay but the color wasn't very strong) so we mixed it with manic panic and that fixed it! The bleach part was kinda scary. My scalp got all hot!

yep, i'm waiting a few weeks in between bleaching sessions (really only have time to work on the weekend), so hopefully my hair is okay by the end of all this. i definitely don't want to end up having hair like your salon mishap, yikesss. did your stylist not know what she was doing?
@ rainbowbarnacle
that sounds really awesome! how long did it last?
She'd bleached my hair before without any major issues, but this time around she got distracted with another customer and left the product in my hair too long. I have no idea of what the hell she uses because every other stylist I've been to after I decided to never go back to her always needs a good 2-3 hours to strip my hair down to a yellowish hue...
It stayed really vibrant for a good few months after that--heck, it's still pretty colorful right now, although my roots have come in since then and everything's faded a bit to a nifty pastel hue.
I've coloured my hair copper in high school, then when I had my first job at 19, I started getting my hair streaked. I've had my hair streaked blonde once or twice over the last 8 years. I'd like to get it done again (hide those whites that are coming in), but it's too expensive and I don't have the money.
Oh, I dyed it red-copper this summer and let it come out. I just like my natural dark brown hair.
that is crazy scary. i'm glad you stopped seeing her ahahaha
what kind of place do you work at? that really sucks!!! thankfully i'm still in college so I don't have to worry about that kind of stuff too much, recently two people I work with at my lab dyed their hair so I figure it'd be safe to ^^ just worried about what parents would say when i get back, lol!
it's cool that you like your natural hair, I like having my black hair too! like come on, a natural emo color, why would i change that I can't ever dye my whole scalp, partly because i have a fear of my hair falling out haha. ombre is the most I'll ever do. At least doing streaks yourself is cheaper, I hope you get enough funds to get them :) Though I meannn there's a silver hair trend now haha
I've dyed my hair nearly every color of the rainbow, and then every combination of them that you could think of. lol I wish I could dye my hair an actual rainbow, but alas, I have to keep my hair "natural" for work. I've been back to plain old brown for a few years now, but I'm dying to get back to the colors. ;^; I don't even feel myself without crazy hair. haha
Luckily, the stylist who's always done my hair is fantastic, so I don't have any horror stories. She always loved dying my hair because she was excited to see all the cool colors, and she said my hair was the best ever for dying because even though I have relatively dark hair, the bleach would take really well and I'd be nearly platinum blonde in one go. Then the dye would be super vibrant on top of that, and it would always last a decent while.
My favorite color ever was bright red. My friends called it "Gerard Way red" because I dyed my hair around the same time Gerard from My Chemical Romance had his hair that color. The upkeep was insane though, but totally worth it. I just used a lot of dry shampoo and tried to only wash my hair like 3 times a week. lol
Green is a good color though. I've never done mint specifically, but in my experience green colors tend to last a long time. Anyway, enough of my ramblings, but good luck with your dye! I hope it turns out exactly how you imagined! ^-^
I've dyed my hair quite a bit, and fortunately haven't had any incidents! I haven't had any really unnatural colors, but I would love to try something like blue or purple. My hair is naturally quite a dark brown (which I like), but I got it professionally lightened it and had blonde in it for the first time over the summer/fall and really quite enjoyed it! Sometimes I'd like to go full out and go totally blonde, but I would look like an albino with my pale-ass skin and light eyes, haha!
Been dyeing my hair for 8 or 9 years now. I'm naturally ash blonde, but I've had black, brown, and natural red at different points. I have been dyeing it unnatural colors for about 5 years now: firetruck red, all shades of pink, all shades of purple, smurf blue, combinations of the above. I had it purple for 3 years, the last of which had a cool gradient from purple to pink in the front.
Now it's a deep pinkish red. I'm trying to slowly transition to a more "natural," or at least "professional" looking color. Not because I want to, but because I'm a gigging classical musician and that shit doesn't always fly. -sigh-
i change my hair color every once in a while, my usual are green and purple apparently. worst that ever happened was back in middle school, i was bein a lazy lil shit and went to sleep with wet hair woke up to a purple pillow.....
