i remember there was one when i was questing and selling everything but now i'm on the constant lookout for books but dont know is someone does specifically give them out?

I think most of them have R160 books they give out (I seem to get a ton from Quentin) but I can't say I get many RS-able books from quests.
I RS at the Book Nook, though, turns a nice profit, plus I find it's a good way to get books for AP. MY pet Academic has read 700+ books and the majority of those I RSed. Also, the shop isn't massive like Plushie Parlor is--it's usually a reasonable amount of icons to sort through, and all unique or in book sets.

if you wanted to try vending at the machines, I believe the blue sky one gives out books.
I found it helpful to join Subetalodge and make a book list for whichever pet it is, then you can filter that list to show you what books have been read or which you havent, very much like the beanbag option on the games page here on Subeta.

to make a book checklist for a specific pet of yours:

go to the 'my account' page (under the 'my account' dropdown) and type the name of the pet you're reading to into the box labeled "your pets." then go to the 'your collections' page (under the 'lists' dropdown). you should now see a link that says "(pet name)'s books." click that, and you will be able to add books to their list as you read to them, and see which books you haven't read to them.

to make a checklist for books you have:

go to the 'make a custom checklist' page (under the 'my account' dropdown, and pick the "item type" option. from the dropdown list, pick 'book' and give the list a name (like, "books" or whatever you like). then click "create collection." now you can add books that you own to the list, and see which ones you don't yet have.

any and all of your checklists will show up on the right-hand sidebar under the "checklists" widget. if you don't see it there, go to the 'manage widgets' page (linked at the bottom of the right-hand sidebar) and add it.

if you are looking at all the books on subetalodge I found it very helpful not to go by shop search but by account search - that made it so much easier to bookmark the 1525 books Mondstaub has already read XD And thus make it easier to find the ones I stll need for her XD

so now I know who keeps getting all the books I want giggles
