I was under the impression that new spotlight rules meant you had to have your pets image on the profile - but this doesn't appear to be the case for a lot of recent winners. Am I mistaken or just misunderstanding? :C

It means pet image as in an image that is easily identifiable as the pet you have. I'll use mine since it was recent as an example. Banana doesn't have the original tutani image but it has her dolphin art that is recognizable as a pet, is yellow to match the gold of the tutani and looks like it could be a subspecies of tutani.

Okay, so like a representation of the pet? I don't mean to be calling anyone out at all - but using a recent winner as an example: [x], isn't that a little hard to know that the art is a galactic legeica?

My first post is probably too exact. As long as you have a pet image that doesn't completely just contradict what you have there is wiggle room. Like say, putting an image that is OBVIOUSLY a cybill and it is on an antlephore, that is just not ok. Stuff like that. We just want this to be the pet spotlight and not the human spotlight. Is that a little better explanation?

With your example, the animal doesn't have the scales, and it has added features but you can still see that it could be a legeica with the neck ruff and the hooves and fur on the legs and tail. And while it is not the traditional galactic colors, there is nothing that really matches that color scheme.

I added all my pet's images to my profiles just in case. I was denied spotlight because I didn't have an image of my pet on her profile.

Yeah I was denied spotlight ages ago when it was first introduced and I assumed from the message that a pet image was mandatory.
