Hey guys! I am due to have a tonsillectomy on the 16th, and I am super nervous given that I'm 21 and I've heard the recovery is a lot worse as an adult. It also doesn't help that the internet abounds with awful horror stories about botched surgeries. :-( Does anyone have advice about how to make the recovery as smooth as possible/soothing words so I'm not so scared? Another thing worrying me is that I will mostly be alone during the recovery-- I will have friends check in on me every few days, but I think it's going to be really hard to manage everything by myself.

I was pretty much alone during the recovery. I even went home by bus ha ha. I wasn't able to eat anything during 2 weeks (I was bleeding because of the scabs) and I was not able to drink water quickly because it came out of my nose. It's a quick procedure and my throat was a bit sore but nothing crazy either. People make it big for nothing. Like every surgeries, there are risk but I'm very positive it's going to be okay.

I had mine taken out at 22 ^_^ it was pretty miserable. I survived off baby food and pain meds. Honestly tho the worst part was not the pain it was that I lost the ability to taste anything sweet for like 2 months and that was awful. Make sure you sleep with your head propped up real well or you will wake up feeling like you are drowning.

Thank you! It's reassuring to hear that it wasn't excruciating for either of you :-)

I haven't had this specific surgery but after I had my wisdom teeth out and other surgery... All I can say is, sleep as much as you can, try to get nutrition even though eating is hard, and take make sure you take your pain meds on a schedule so there aren't times where there's none in your system at all because ouch.

My surgery is in about six hours. I'm so anxious! Thanks for the advice, everyone.

I hope your surgery went smoothly ! I don't have any suggestions on recovery other than what others mentioned and what the doctors say to do.

I had mine taken out when I was very young, and while I remember some of what took place, I don't remember much about the recovery other than my throat felt so sore. I ate lots and lots of orange dreamsicle pops.

I wish you the speediest recovery!!!!!

It went well! I am feeling really good from the anesthesia and the pain meds they gave me. Everyone said I wouldn't feel like eating, but I've been starving! Trying to make the most of my hunger & ability to eat before it gets more painful later in the week. I have had two popsicles, pudding, a smoothie, mashed potatoes, and sorbet! It hurts some but it isn't excruciating. It's just like having mild tonsillitis or strep right now.

I'm glad you are doing okay! I had my tonsils out when I was 26-27 (I'm 28 now) and it was...not fun. It hurt quite a bit afterwards but the pain meds kept it in check mostly. XD I had the Coblation type done (Basically just a stream of extremly fast saline and energy used to remove them) and I didn't bleed at all, surprisingly.

Make sure to keep hydrated. heart

Update: The first two days were fine, but the rest has been a complete nightmare! It's day six and it feels like I've been suffering for an eternity. And I'm so grumpy today from not having solid food; I just keep daydreaming about all the things I wish I could eat. The worst is that the scabs in my throat make my mouth taste like burnt flesh, and it doesn't go away no matter how much water I drink. The nasty taste sometimes makes me nauseous, which makes me reluctant to eat-- and when I don't eat, I can't take my meds or I'll get sick. When I don't take my meds, the pain is just mind-bending. I just want to be better already. This is the worst experience of my life. At least I can say it didn't take me by surprise; all the horror stories I'd read weren't exaggeration!

hugs How are you doing? I just happened upon this thread today. I hope you're feeling at least a little better this evening. I woke up this morning with a sore throat so I'm hoping it's nothing needing a tonsillectomy! But this thread's title...I was like, seriously? On a day I have a sore throat? lol

I had my tonsils out when I was a kid. I remember being wheeled in a crib and I was crying and the Doctor said to me "If you don't stop crying, you won't see your mom".

Yeah...

Anyway, I had gum graft surgery done not too long ago (last week of November) and I was eating baby food and drinking ensure for the first few days. I eventually started eating solid food. I had to cut it up real small.

I had it done at 19 and my body doesn't handle narcotic pain medication, so it was a pretty painful recovery. Days 7-9 were the worst for some reason. And it hurt to yawn for literally almost an entire year afterward due to scar tissue. At least it's done now and you just need to focus on healing!

It's been awful. This recovery is so frustrating because it seems every day gets a little bit worse and I am able to eat less and less. My percocet ran out several days so I am trying to tough out the pain with liquid Motrin, but it has really spoiled my holidays.

Is there any way for you to contact the surgeon or your doctor and have them extend the painkillers? When I had my wisdom teeth taken out, that's what I had to do. They kind of expect it with these things.

I'm sorry your Christmas is so crappy. x.x;

I don't know. I am visiting my parents currently, about two hours away from where I live and got the surgery. And the doctor has been on vacation since the 17th. I guess I never considered it a possibility because I've read that doctors don't prescribe opioids for longer than seven days at a time.

I wasn't aware that type of medicine was an opiod? Still, I wish there was something you could do. Tea? Ice cream? Hot chocolate?
