This is probably mentioned somewhere and I just missed it. Does the Presents tab in the Gift Center place a gift under the user's tree, or is it sent as a gift box?

It sends a gift box. You can click on someone's tree on their profile to leave a gift there, or you should be able to add their username into this link:
