So, has anyone else seen this movie yet? I don't want to randomly go into a bunch of spoilers or anything, but was anyone else thrown off by how different from the books it was?

Read the book then saw the movie. I was kind of disappointed with how they swapped Emma and Olives "powers". I read somewhere that they said that fire is too common and that levitating powers were mor interesting..but still it sucked seeing Olive with such a small role when she should have been the main character..idk. Also the beginning went far too fast there were so many important things missing. :/

I agree that the beginning went too fast, and it did seem like a lot was missing. I feel like they were trying to make it a single movie instead of a series, but with there being multiple books, I think that it should have at least been a little longer to be able to fit more into it.

Oh yikes. I'm reading the book (stumbled upon it without even knowing it was being made into a movie), and it's pretty disappointing to hear how inaccurate the movie is. Granted that always seems to happen with book-to-movie adaptations, but it wouldn't hurt to stay more loyal to the source work.
With that said, I'm enjoying the book a ton. I went out and bought the second book over the weekend, since I'm almost done with the first book. With how the first one is wrapping up, I don't see how it alone can be a movie in the first place without ending awkwardly.
It was really well done, and its a great book series as well.
I couldn't think of anyone else to be the lead character than Asa either.
- To say I was extremely disappointed is an understatement. I read the books and was so curious to see how they did certain things... and then they just... ruined it. They ruined it all. On it's own I guess it was a good movie, my boyfriend loved it, but he didn't read the book.
I feel like the entire second half was literally just made up.
I've always been a fan of Tim Burton, but I was not very happy about this one!
The good thing about the books is that they're amazing. I was really excited to see that the most recent one had come out, when I discovered it by accident.
The movie was definitely really well made. I just wish it would have been more true to the books.
I know what you mean. My husband also really loved it, but he hasn't read any of the books either. I had to explain the plot of the books to him, and he was really confused how that even happened. It was good as a standalone movie though, as long as you disregard the books entirely.

That is true, like the switch of the female main character/love interest in terms of her abilities.
I think they went with what they thought would be more interesting to a movie audience? Or easier to work with. I'm not really sure actually.
