Let's say someone uses one of the default hairs for their avatar and they share the avatar. They then change their avatar and get rid of the default hair. Why does the default hair also disappear on the shared avatar?

The shared HAs automatically use the same base features as you currently have set. I'm not sure why, but iirc they've always worked like that.
