I know very little about makeup. Whenever I wear it, I only do my eyes: eyeshadow, eye liner, and mascara. I'm a total newb at everything else. Here soon, my fiance and I will be doing engagement pictures, and I would like to do more makeup than just my eyes. I can always watch some YouTube tutorials, but I don't even know where to begin or what to buy.
Yesterday I bought a couple lipsticks but I'm not happy with either of them. One of them is a pretty color, this to be exact, but it transfers so easily. It got on my teeth, even after I tried that "O trick" or whatever. I also don't want to have to worry about my lipstick tranferring onto my fiance when we get pictures done of us kissing or something. Should I avoid lipstick altogether? Should I try something other than lipstick? Or do you have suggestions of a good lipstick that doesn't transfer so easily? If I were to try another lipstick, I may go lighter in color anyway. I also had the trouble where the lipstick looked good when my mouth was closed, but whenever I opened my mouth/acted like I was kissing (or the dreaded 'duck face'), you could easily tell that the lipstick didn't stay on my inner lips. (I basically mean this problem, except it is more noticeable on me.) I didn't buy any foundation because I have no idea what to buy for that.
Do you have any suggestions on what to buy? Brands? Any tips? Advice? Anything!? If it helps, I have the stuff covered for my eyes, but I know NOTHING about foundation and lipstick. I'd love to hear any advice, thank you very much!
Youtube is honest to god going to be your best friend. There are so many product reviews by all sorts of girls with all sorts of incomes, skin colors and experiences, and which colors won't transfer, and which ones will look stay on for you. For foundation, if you can, I would actually go to a professional store and get shade matched. That's probably going to be your best bet for stuff like that.
Perhaps try lip liner instead? I am not a big lip person so I dont know of any good brands. Have heard good things about kylie jenners lip sticks though. Never tried em
Youtube is a god send. I have learned SO many tips and tricks from gurus there.
My favorite is kandee johnson (older videos from 3-4 years ago and so on though...)
Good luck c:

YouTube has been a blessing for what little I know so far bahaha. I've learned a lot of tips to help me with eyeshadow and eyeliner. I looked very little for foundation and lipstick so I'll dig a little deeper with those areas. Didn't think of getting a shade matched from a professional store. The only thing that I've had since I started doing my makeup last year is a tad too dark for my skin color which is why I only ever want to use it for touching up acne or something. I'm just cheap when it comes to makeup since I don't fully know what I'm doing yet lol. Thanks for the advice!
Tbh I don't know what I would do without YouTube. I learned some pretty eyeshadow looks because of it. I have heard of lip liner, just didn't think of it while I was shopping the other day! I'll probably watch some more videos about lipsticks/gloss/etc. I was debating on passing on it, but my lips are getting chap from the weather change sooo it might not hurt to use. Thanks for the advice!
YouTube is great as is /r/makeupaddiction on Reddit. There's lots of info on there and the community was pretty good the last time I checked it out (I like never use makeup... I might put a bit on once in a blue moon but I do like seeing others' makeup).
I LOVE THIS POST, YES. sorry, i love makeup so this is my cup of tea.
so, makeup is very easy, just practice! and like the other said, youtube is very helpful. you can search up anything! so for lipstick, i would recommend a liquid lipstick. a liquid lipstick is practically like a lipstick, but in a lipgloss-ish forum. you put it on, and it dries usually matte. my favorite companies for liquid lipsticks are jeffree star cosmetics, anastasia beverly hills, and probably colourpop (which are only $6 bucks). jeffree star cosmetics liquid lipsticks are proven and tested and they are kiss proof!
a tip with eyeliner, if you like that wing effect, tape is your best friend. angle the tape along with your lashes, towards the end of your eyebrow. liquid or gel would be the best and just do your eyeliner, and drag it across the tape, and it cleans up the edges!
with foundation, i always recommend using a beauty blender, or some type of beauty sponge. it makes sure not to dispense too much, and it blends it out beautifully.
if you have any questions, please let me know (:
Oh my goodness, I am definitely more of a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl, but every once and a while I like to take a little more effort into looking nice. I'm just going to step it up from my norm makeup routine, lol. Thanks for the Reddit suggestion! I'll check that out.
I was considering liquid lipstick actually! That's what I was going for but got poor results from what I bought, even though the color was pretty. Colourpop and Beverly Hills sound familiar, and I'll have to check out jeffree star as well! Especially if they are kiss proof omg. I was going more for lipsticks you can find in the typical drug store this time around since the weekend will be here soon. Weather permits, we will be doing our pictures Sunday. However I'll still give them a look because maybe I'll make lipstick part of my makeup routine. I heard that Milani has a pretty decent liquid lipstick. I found their products in my local stores but none of them carried their liquid lipsticks lol. I also bought Rimmel's 16 hour kiss-proof liquid lipstick. I don't need it to last for that long but it's been doing a great job of not transfering when I kissed on the back of my hand and ate some pizza for lunch haha.
Oh yes I got the tape idea from YouTube as well! It helps me wonders because my hand gets so shaky and I'm awful at it by myself. Heck, I have to be super careful every time I put on liner because I always seem to mess up at some point while applying it.
I really need to invest in a sponge of some sort. I'm definitely one to just dab dots onto my face with my finger and then try to blend it in myself but it always looks like I have too much on and I end up taking it off.
I do have a question! How exactly do you choose what shade of foundation/concealer you need? Mine is definitely too dark for my skin, but it was my mom's and she's tanner than I am. I'd say I'm pale, but not pasty white or anything lol. I have a little bit of color but I'm definitely not tan xD Do you go to some makeup store like Ulta to get matched for a shade? Or is it kind of trial-and-error at the drug stores? I never know what shade or brand to try out. I've been apprehensive to buy something because I don't want to just waste my money haha.
i totally know what you mean! i wish that you can get all the makeup from the store on the corner ): if it's for something coming up quickly, maybe try going to an ulta or sephora near you? both stores carry anastasia beverly hills. sephora is more of "high-end" makeup, and ulta has some high end mixed with drug store, which I fancy. The milani ones are nice! i think i have the shade called adorable? i don't remember on the top of my head, but it's a perfect pink nude for every day wear. what's great about it is it smells like sugar and is very pigmented. but on the downside, it is very drying of the lips and cracks easily ):
and tape does wonders. it's literally the only way i will do my winged eyeliner just because it comes out so sharp.
with foundation application, when i first started, i used loreal true match and blended it with my hands, omg. then i started with a brush, and now using a beauty sponge! definitely a game changer.
so with this, i feel your pain. i'm pretty fair, usually the palest shade at every company or sometimes its a little too dark. with finding your perfect shade, you want to find out what undertone you are. whether you are cool, warm, or neutral. i fall between cool and neutral, and sometimes it's too hard to tell with foundations because some of them suggest what color and undertone you are. ulta stores to have reps that can help you find your perfect color, even if its a high end foundation. what i like to do is take that foundation and find something cheaper and try the drug store in comparison and see if they match. i hope this makes sense, because i'm so scatter brain right now. sephora and mac cosmetics also have these services and you would just walk in and ask to be matched to a foundation/concealer, and it's no charge.
Ohhh I didn't know Sephora and Ulta carried Anastasia Beverly Hills! I was just in Ulta the other day (though tbh it was only my second time in that store). It's a little expensive for me at the moment because I've spent so much money recently lol but I'll definitely give it a shot sometime.
They do have a shade called Adorable so that's probably it! Since I'm so new with lipstick, I'm not sure how the dried lips and cracking feels/looks yet so I'll probably just have to give it a shot. One of my biggest wants is for it not to transfer so it may be something I can look past.
I'm currently at the brush stage for foundation. Need to step up to a sponge haha. I imagine getting whatever beauty sponge will do?
Oh that makes total sense! I'm so cheap so I'd definitely find a cheaper product if they offer something a little high. I'll probably end up asking a store rep because I know I'll feel so overwhelmed if I went to seriously look at foundations by myself.
Thank you so much for your advice!
i totally get where you're coming from girl. just explore your options! also, at sephora (i'm not sure about ulta) get samples! you can get samples of foundations, primers, anything of that sort i believe. so if you're wanting to splurge on a new high end foundation but don't know how it will look on your skin, or anything, ask for a sample and try it out before you buy it.
i would recommend a beauty blender, just because it's my favorite and can't leave home without it, but. you can also get the real technique beauty sponges, that are about half the price, but they practically do the same thing. i would stick with those two, because i've noticed with other makeup sponges it soaks up all the product and doesn't apply to face evenly, but the two i said work great.
with the beauty sponges, DON'T FORGET TO GET IT DAMP. when i first started using them, i used them dry and my makeup came out awful. just run it under the sink, and squeeze out all the water with your hand or a towel, and get to pouncing!
if you're looking for a good dug store foundation, i absolutely love the l'oreal pro-glow and pro-matte foundations. whether your looking for a matte face to minimize blemishes and pores, or a luminous foundation to be more "natural" i love them equally. they're about 12-13 bucks a tube and can get them at the drug store!
and of course, if you have any questions, please let me know (:
lol I just pinged you on your own board but here, have another ping.
So while I was at Target yesterday picking up some more lipstick shades and colors, I remembered your suggestions of L'oreal's pro-glow and pro-matte foundations. I picked up the pro-glow and I really like it! I picked out a color that looked pretty close to my skintone imo and it was pretty dang close! I purchased some concealer from L'oreal as well. The two together are definitely subtle and you can hardly tell I'm wearing foundation, but that's what I was going for anyway. It definitely helped with any blemishes I had lol.
I also picked up one of the beauty sponges and omg it's a night and day difference from using my fingers or a brush xD I remembered hearing to get it damp as well and made sure to do that. I didn't see the Real Technique sponge but I know what you're talking about, the orange one I believe it is. But the one I got worked pretty well. It probably helps that I picked out foundations that are so close to my skintone because I didn't notice any streaks or it being uneven.
Thank you so much for your help and suggestions! It's helped tremendously.
i'm so happy you got them and enjoyed them, that makes me so happy! but definitely, if you have any questions about makeup, i'm always here (:
We did our engagement pictures today and I was so glad to have all the makeup for the pics! I was initially planning on wearing some more natural lipstick for the pictures, but I ended up finding a burgundy shade that matched my cardigan sweater super well and went with that. My fiance's sister is going to school for photography so I had her do our pictures. We looked at them back at their house to preview the pics and they look awesome. Lipstick and foundation turned out super well, many thanks and much love for the foundation recommendation. I'll have to try the pro-matte sometime.
I'll probably give your lipstick suggestions a try sometime as well! I ended up liking how it looks on me, even the darker shades which I wasn't expecting to like very much, and my fiance totally loved lipstick on me as well lol.
i definitely want to see the pictures when they're ready! and it's always nice to hear your man give you compliments, that's awesome (:
i haven't tried them myself but jeffree star's lipsticks are supposed to be pretty transfer-proof as for the feathering, a clear lipliner around the edges of your mouth sealed with a little powder does wonders for me. i just dab a little powder over it with a concealer brush (but any small, non-fluffy brush will do). putting a colored lip liner over your whole lip (rather than just lining) helps your lipstick stay put as well.
for foundation i honestly really like maybelline's fitme line. (with primer! face primer is the literal best thing; it makes your face look smooth and flawless and your makeup apply so much smoother). do the matte if you have oily skin and the dewy if you have dry & they have corresponding powder lines based on your skin texture. i like their setting spray, too that keeps your makeup from wearing off or smooshing together when you're wearing it for a long time. you definitely want to figure out your undertone when you're looking at foundations; some lines, like l'oreal's true match go by undertones as well as light to dark to make it easier. i also really like these weird toothbrushes for applying liquid foundation. i have an inexpensive one and it works well.
Thank you for all your suggestions! I had not thought of setting the lipstick with powder and using lip liner on the entire lip. I don't have a problem with the lipstick on the outer edges of my mouth, just inside, mostly because of eating meals. I'll definitely consider that.
The L'oreal pro-glow worked fine for me foundation-wise, but I'll look at Maybelline's too! I already use the brand's eyeshadow pallettes and like them a lot. I think I may need to give the matte a shot. My skin is a little oily but not much, but it wouldn't hurt to give that a shot.
Ohhh that looks like a spiffy little tool for foundation! I bought an inexpensive sponge and that's doing fine for the moment, but that might be nice too.
you're welcome! i love makeup lol yeah any foods that have oil in them will take your lipstick off no matter what because oil breaks down the makeup. i just, like, eat pizza very carefully with a fork if i'm trying not to mess up my lipstick
the coastal scents revealed palettes off of birchbox are also pretty nice. i've got the palette and most of the shades blend really nicely
yeah it's super nifty. i couldn't get into the sponges personally but with the toothbrush thing you just kind of buff the foundation into your skin and it blends everything really quickly and nicely, even in tricky spots
