So I've got my own YouTube channel, and I've done 3 unboxing videos. I don't have a lot of experience with them (I've watched a couple that friends have made). I feel like they're getting easier to do as I get more practice, but I'm not sure if they're actually improving any, or what I can do to make them better. I don't have a lot of resources (I record the videos on my phone and don't have a home office to do them in), either, so I have some pretty tough limitations to deal with.

I'd love some feedback and pointers!

I just realized this is a little bit of a late post but... there are some things that I thought you could do to make this a bit of an upgraded experience. Your videos are a great start though.

  • Turn your phone to landscape. Using your phone for recording is fine, but turn it landscape. That way it fills the screen and it looks more professional, with less effort.

  • Invest in a phone holder. It can be dirt cheap, but find yourself an easy rig so you don't have to hold your phone. There's lots of holders out there that are used so you can see/watch videos on your phone without having to hold it. You can reverse engineer it.

  • I want to see more of the product! Open up the cream, put some on your hand, let us see the texture. Open up the lipstick box, pull out the lipstick, swatch your hand. This gives more awareness of what the product actually is.

  • I want to see more of the product packaging. Flash to the ingredients side a little more.

When I watch an unboxing video I want to see: the packaging completely, what the ingredients side is (because I always pick it up and read it in stores), I want to see the texture, I want to find out how it smells, what it feels like to you, what it does, etc. I want to walk away from your unboxing feeling like I know exactly what the product is now and that allows me to buy it.

:) I like your voice btw. Good voice for unboxing videos. That's not meant as creepy... but you need the right voice. There are some video makers who you get nauseated watching them, or fall asleep, etc.

Thank you so much for the tips! I'll be sure to do more sampling of products in the future. With these, I didn't want to open them because some of them are going to be stocking stuffers and gifts for clients, but I will do some videos for my personal orders so I can do a little more demonstrating.

I didn't even think of landscape mode! Duh!

I did end up ordering an inexpensive phone mount so I'm not holding it with one hand while I struggle with products with the other. I had a client suggest to me that I do at least a portion of the videos so you can see me and not just my hands. That's a little terrifying, but I'm curious, does that get a yay or nay from you?

Thanks for the voice compliment! It doesn't come across as creepy. It's very reassuring. I hate hearing the way that I sound, but I guess all my years of work over the phone has come in handy.
