I never cured myself so underneath all of this layering I'm still a 2009 Virus zombie... but the census says there are 0. I'm really skeptical that I'm the very last one and also skeptical that I somehow managed to sneak out of the count. My memory isn't the best, but I believe the last time I looked was 2 years ago and there were still 200ish of us assorted 2009 zombies. So I'm curious about what messed up the counts over the years and what the actual counts are.
The only thing that I can think of is that maybe the wardrobe updates over the years messed up the count (I haven't visited it yet which is why I suspect it) but would love if someone knew for sure.
Well with how the wardrobe works now, there's no "cure" anymore. You can just unlock the skins and switch between them whenever you want.
I'm not sure how the counter determines its numbers anymore either, it could be broken but I don't know.
I'm not 100% sure but I think the counter still works, it just counts people currently wearing those skins? You may not actually have yours on, there was an issue with the wardrobe the first year that the Skins feature was added and people's zombie skins got removed. You might need to file a ticket and have yours unlocked, or at least check and make sure it IS unlocked in your wardrobe.
This is news to me. So basically it sounds like there's no reason for me to still have a stashed away in the event that I ever want to cure myself? Or a reason for that item to exist at all anymore? Wow I feel like I need someone to explain what exactly I missed. I've skipped a few Pandemics and suddenly feel extremely out of the loop.
I think the one in 2015 was the first to bring back the old viruses and lets us get whatever ones we wanted (still have to be bitten by someone who already has it though).
I'm not sure when exactly the wardrobe changed, but yeah now we can keep zombie skins and Morostide zapper skins once we unlock them. The ones that you don't have are grayed out on the Skins page in the wardrobe.
As far as I know, there's no real reason to have the cures anymore other than for galleries or whatever. I don't think they do anything when you use them anymore, and the achievements for using them have been retired I believe.
The wardrobe changed just after Morostide (of 2014) iirc, I had kept my Nightmare skin for about 8 months and decided not to keep a skin after Morostide that year >_<
But no, the cures really have no use anymore, you have to unlock the skin in your wardrobe and just take it off if you don't want to wear it. You have to wear a skin to access the alchemist but the Zombie Den was changed recently to be open to everyone, living or unliving.
Sounds like there's no real reason to keep the virus anymore either then. What a huge bummer. I'm actually really saddened by these changes. It kinda feels like it flips the bird to all of those years I spent avoiding the wardrobe just because it was such a hassle to cover up the virus in a way that was cute. Ultimately I gave up on the wardrobe entirely which to me was a very small price to pay for the ability to keep access to all of those items.
Originally I was holding onto the virus for the Zombie Den so that I had easy access to desireable wishlist items that many others didn't have access to. It made it really easy to bomb people with themed items (for holidays or Drills or whatever) that otherwise would have cost them a fortune.
Yeah, iirc a lot of long-time zombies felt the same way when the change was first made. But overall I think most people are happy that the skins are accessible because it means we can get more unlockable skins (for example there's one tied to a Fireside achievement, and one you can get randomly while buying from the SubQ now) and you have more options with your HA + you don't have to be upset that you weren't around for a skin that you really like.
I joined after Survival during the last year that they did the "permanent" virus skins, so I was really disappointed to find out they weren't doing anymore (I mean, they have started up again now but at the time it wasn't in the cards). And I'm super excited to have some of the old skins unlocked c:
Cosmetic skins I know I wouldn't have cared about as much, but it was the Den and the benefit of anon gifting those items that kept me sticking with it all of these years. It's really depressing to me that there's really no longer even a point :/
Gah, this news makes me want to take another long break. I only just came back at the beginning of A Bad Omen. :/
In 2013 the L'amour Parlor gained an item that cured that years' skins, and then later it was made so that it cured all skins. So the reason for holding onto an old cure is not because you need it for a cure. The old specific cures are still usually cheaper than the universal one.
Not every item in Subeta has a use. Enjoy your cure for what it is? A pretty item, or something that can be used in a TC, or something to hoard in your Vault as a souvenir.
The only reason you wish to play Subeta is to assert privilege over all the users even if it means keeping an HA image you really don't like, and such a small privilege to boot?
Gosh, I'm sorry that's all that's here for you. Maybe your friends will find something else about you to like.
There's so much fun to be had here in Subeta besides that for me.
As a fellow 2009 keeper of the zombie skin, I too was originally disappointed with the change. But after using the different skins and earning more from the events in the years since, I must say that not only have I fully accepted the change, but I now embrace it!
Give yourself a little time to get used to the idea before dismissing the site altogether!
LOL, of course there have been lots of other changes, both minor and major, that have dimmed my enjoyment of the site.

Woah, I seem to have given you the wrong impression which appears to have conjured up some bitterness, resentment, hostility, or some combination thereof. When I posted that yesterday I was just feeling really saddened by the news and incredibly out of the loop (by no fault of anyone else). By "sticking with it all of these years", I meant the Virus itself, not Subeta. No, asserting privilege is not a driving force behind me continuing to play - I come and go as I please, and I don't think it has ever been the result of an update. It's just a HUGE change that I had no idea about because I've been away for 2 years, and like I said in a different post it feels like it is flipping the bird to all of those years that us 2009 zombies spent not being able to make cute HAs (semi-decent coverups were not even available until 2011, and from what I remember until then we were told to just deal with it, that we would have to choose to have Den access OR play with the wardrobe, but not both). The Den is my favorite shop in the game because I adore zombie-themed things, so I chose to give up on the wardrobe. It was such a unique thing in my eyes to have different strains each year that you couldn't get the following year. There were times I wanted to switch to a better looking one, but being able to still gift people (not even friends btw, just randoms that never knew it was me -- so nobody needs to find a new reason to like me) the 2009 items was important enough to me to warrant keeping it.
It's a disappointing change to me right now because I'm just now learning of it. Everybody else has already had time to process it and either accept it or leave. I totally get why people would be in support of it, especially with the recent movement towards permanent shops with infinite stock rather than limited time restockables (plus the fact that Subeta has always been big on "nothing retires forever", which has always been a good thing gameplay wise). Personally though, it seems like if everyone can have access all the time, it diminishes the overall value of the items to the point that they may as well not even be tradeable. This would be drastic and annoying so I wouldn't actually want them to become untradeable, but I hope you can still understand what I mean: from what I can tell they don't sell unless you're offering a big discount below Skitters pricing (aka only worth selling if you get it from a quest), and people don't seem as excited in general to receive an anonymous gift box of the Den items they've put on their wishlist anymore either because they can just as easily go get it themselves. And yes I do check to make sure they don't have it labelled as a reference list.
I get a lot of enjoyment out of Subeta, which is why I keep coming back. Anonymous gifting has always been a huge part of the experience for me when I do inevitably come back, but there are many other aspects that I enjoy. My account is almost 10 years old just like yours, and over the years I've taken a lot of breaks to play other games. Eventually I come back, play for a while longer, and then take another break. It's just the way things go for me. Eventually I get burnt out on one game and have to switch for a while. I am mostly just grateful that Subeta has not quite followed the trend of super aggressive in-your-face MTX that other games have adopted.
I'm sure overall the change is a good thing. Discontinued items are something I loathe about other games, and generally speaking I'm glad that Subeta does not retire anything forever. But it's still a really sad change for me right now.
Some newer changes have certainly been enjoyable to come back to, and some less than enjoyable, but I think it's actually the lack of changes in some areas that dim my enjoyment the most. Ever since the red "You have this item!" was removed from wishlists years ago, I've been desperately hoping for a suitable replacement with no such luck. Love the "search wishlist" feature in user shops now that categories are gone, but I need something like that for wishlists to easily seek out items I own. Also really bothers me that there's still no way to weed out inactive users on the wishlist search.
One thing is for certain though, even if I take a break I will always end up coming back eventually. Usually it's a holiday or newsletter that catches my attention, but sometimes just a random memory of gift bombing the hell out of someone. What's really great is that I still see some of those same users that I gift bombed years ago still active on forums!
