Spoilers, obv.

Anyone watch the premiere last night? I really liked the whole unknown vibe of waiting to see what the theme will be, and for me, it didn't disappoint.

Even though the Roanoke colony was brought up during all the speculation, it's taken a totally different twist than I thought it would, and I really dig the format. It seems like they've gone back to the horror aspect of the show, like season 1. I actually got chills a couple of times during the episode. I also like the homages to other scary movies sprinkled throughout. Sometimes, simple is best. Don't need over the top blood/guts/gore. Fear of the "unknown" has always been more terrifying to me.

What did you guys think?

Thus far, I like it. I was a teensy bit hesitant with the first episode (but I always am, when the new season starts lol!) but its good. I'm a bit behind because we don't have "regular" TV--we all mainly rely on Hulu/Amazon/Netflix--but regardless, it's good this far.

- I'm all up to date and have seen every episode the day after.

SPOILERS (I'll stay general)

I think the format is interesting and different. I use to watch a lot of the Paranormal Witness and ghost shows, I mean I still watch them especially around October.

But even after the first episode I have been wondering when they will break the format and get to the real story. And like how is that going to play out at this point? The whole actors playing actors thing. I know they said a twist is coming in ep. 6. After last night's episode I have also come to the point that this show really can't suspend my belief anymore. Like I am having too many issues about what the characters are doing and their reactions. They weren't making logical choices to begin with, but it has to increased even more where it's now stupid.

And where is Evan Peters?

My speculation is that it's possible we don't truly know the theme of this season, because there is no opening credits. Episode 6 is where everything apparently changes (and where Evan comes in). I think we'll see the real opening credits then. (Or possibly ep. 7) If it sticks with the Roanoke theme, I believe they will drop the interviews, but idk. For there to be some huge twist, I think it's more than that.

But I'm excited either way. I still like this format. It's more horror and less everything else it's been for the past 4 seasons.

am i the only one who likes the missing credits at the beginning?

SPOILER (click to toggle) I'm not a huge fan of this "documentary/interview/dramatic re-enactment" type of thing,.... but it seems promising thus far

I really detest this format.

For one it takes away from the suspense - like if/when a character might die. If they are doing interviews, then we know the character can't be killed.

For another, I simply don't like and don't watch the shows that originated this format.

I won't be watching any more.

Then you'll be missing out. Episode 6, which is tomorrow, everything changes. I'm pretty sure last week was the last of "Roanoke Nightmare", since they got out of the house and found Flora and everything seems "safe". Also, this is AHS. I never assume someone is alive, even when they're staring right at the camera and talking to it lol.

I'm willing to try again if they do indeed change the format, let me know :). I did like the story, just couldn't stand how they chose to tell it.

THIS is the preview for tomorrows episode. I'm guessing that he's going into where they're filming with matt and shelby (the real ones). Past that- no idea lol. Obv. the colonist story needs to be fleshed out, so I assume they'll go back to the house for some reason to do that.

EDIT:

did you watch it? It was friggin fantastic omg. And yes, in case you didn't, literally everything changed and I think you'll be surprised.

I did watch it, or I should say listened to it since my eyes were closed much of the time. Sadly it doesn't work any better than the last format. I can't watch shows with this jiggly, fake handheld camera work. It makes me nauseous.

LOL true, less spoilers this way. But its near impossible for me to watch. I've tried with some of my favourite shows that sometimes have an episode that does this and I just can't watch. Just listening, with my eyes closed doesn't work because either I fall asleep, I miss most of what's going on, or I get tempted to look and feel sick.

I didn't care for the documentary format at first, but it grew on me. I like the twist they took with last night's episode, but I DESPISE "found footage" stuff. I'll probably keep watching, though.

Also, because I'm a history and paranormal nut, I'm just a teensy bit rolling my eyes at the stuff they did with the Lost Colony (but the changes make for an awesome season, so I'm largely okay with it).

SO. MUCH. BLOOD.

I swear, half their production budget went towards fake blood. But man, the ending of last nights episode was great. Everyone was creepy and now I'm wondering just who will survive.

The Mott ancestor was legit scary. Like he was so nice in the re-enactment, but then just utterly terrifying last night.

I'm so afraid to get into this season, but it's nice to see some other people's point of view on how it's going. I might check it out.

I watched every episode of Roanoake, and for the first time I haven't liked a season. The first episode I enjoyed, but after that everything felt fake and all over the place. I didn't feel any suspense, and I didn't even care that the characters were being killed off. I think it's because it felt a lot like I was watching the Blair Witch Project.

The accents were really bad and took me out of the story too. I don't know how authentic the Butcher was for the time period she is from, but it sounded all over the place and really jarring.

I have to say I took a few days to really digest the ending, and this season as a whole. So the conclusion I came to was that this season made me feel very empty and hollow.

Like previous seasons there are good moments that I absolutely relish even when the plot was all over the place. But those kind of moments were few and far between this season. Which, what I mean to say there were fewer good moments that came to save it. There weren't any amazing costumes like Hotel, or good soundtrack numbers. There weren't any real scenes that were draw dropping in the way they were shot like Freakshow. The characters felt thin and fake. Lee was so stiff. I did not latch onto any of the characters except Cricket, but the Cricket we saw was just the actor. (SPOILERS- and everyone dies, whomp!).

I feel cheated and like it was cheap. I get what they were going for with the reality TV and hand held cams, the quickly rushed reference making fun of ghost hunting shows, the "comic con" panel, and a group of teens trying to get internet famous. I get it. It was references to the old (ie. Blair Witch) and the new age of the internet and tech. But that's how it was so predictable, boring and cheap.

Anyways enough of my ranting. I'll go continue to smoke a pipe of something, dreaming up how I would do a AHS season with UFOs and aliens.

I didn't like this season overall. Just wasn't the same as the previous series.

I was disappointed.

I started watching this season but lost interest a bit after the first few episodes, I actually really love paranormal shows that use the same format as this but the format suffers when it's presented as definite fiction instead of delightfully cheesy "true stories" I think.
