This lesson includes an ESSAY QUESTION assignment. ** This lesson was written by of Slytherin - she has been awarded 75 House Points!

Hello. I'm Jonathan Tuala, your adjunct professor for Ancient Studies. I also work for the Goblin Liaison Office in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures of the Ministry of Magic. I was formerly a Curse-Breaker for Gringotts and have traveled extensively. My alma mater is the Mahoutokoro School of Magic.

Ancient Studies will concern magical practices that predate 476 AD. We will cover a wide range of subjects concerning ancient magic all over the world. Today's topic is ancient Egyptian magic.

The magic wand is considered an essential tool for today's wizards and witches. However, wands are a European invention and Native American and African cultures are traditionally known for their practice of wandless magic. The Ancient Egyptians cast spells through rituals and precise actions. This is known as "heka." For example, The Egyptian Handbook of Ritual Power recommends chanting a magic spell over two nails and then hammering them into the sides of the target's door frame in order to gain mental control over a person. This is the same magic that is practiced through the Imperius Curse, though it is channeled differently.

Amulets were another important source of magic in ancient Egypt. They were obtained from people who were referred to as "protection-makers." The lion-dwarf Bes and the hippopotamus goddess Taweret were thought to be the best at fighting off chaotic dark spirits. Their job was to protect the home, particularly through the night when the forces of evil found strength. Protective amulets were extremely popular and favored highly among the majority of witches and wizards. Other popular choices were worn to endow long life, prosperity, and good health.

Your assignment today is to create a ritual for a spell that is normally performed by wand. Please state the spell, its incantation, and describe the steps performed in the ritual that would replace the use of a wand. Please keep your answer between 1-4 paragraphs. Please post your answers here behind spoiler tags (if you do not know how to use spoiler tags, please let me know and I'd be happy to help you). Each ritual will be graded out of a maximum of 15 House Points.

I have a question - are we only allowed to create rituals of spells for good things like long life, prosperity, good health, as mentioned? Or can we choose curses as well?

( I hope it's okay to ask this here. o.o )

Assignment

I chose The Unlocking Charm, which is also known as the Thief's Friend (Alohomora).

It is a charm that unlocks and opens windows and doors that are not protected by magic. It can also open doors locked by the Locking Spell (Colloportus).

A sign that the spell is working is a glowing light, which may be blue, yellow, or purple, or be invisible.

The spell's incantation is "alohomora"

The following items are needed to replace the wand for the ritual:

 1. a key on a long chain -you can easily wear it hidden, and it's there for whenever you come across something that's locked

 2. a poison ring with a keyhole -again, it's worn so you always have it on you and it's easily accessible

Here is an example of a poison ring and key pendant:

To cast this spell as a ritual:

 1. Take the key and insert it into the lock on the ring

 2. Clearly say the incantation "al-LOH-ha-MOHR -ah"

 3. When the keyhole starts to glow, turn the key. The ring will open.

 4. Whatever locked door or window you wished opened will unlock

 5. Close the ring, re-lock the lock, and proceed forward

Assignment

 • Spell -

I chose the spell Anteoculatia, who's incantation is the same as its name. Though some have been known to call it the Horn-Growing Hex. Anteoculatia is a hex, which creates a red light when cast, turning a person's hair into antlers.

 • Ritual -
 1. The most important step to start with is to acquire hair from the said "victim" you wish to hex.
 2. Heat your cauldron, with standard ingredient on medium.
 3. Crush a piece of antler to a fine dust in your mortar till you have enough to equal one teaspoon.
 4. Add the teaspoon of powdered antler to your cauldron, stir till it completely dissolves.
 5. Once the powdered antler has dissolved add the "victims" hair.
 6. Stir 3 times, on the third stir recite the incantation "Anteoculatia" (AN-tea-oh-cuh-LAY-chee-a). When properly done your cauldron will glow a fiery red on completion.

Merlin Pendragon, Slytherin The Dancing Feet Spell is a charm used to force another person's legs to begin dancing uncontrollably.

The incantation is Tarantallegra

The ritual to perform this spell without the use of wand it's quite simple and requires little equipment so it can be perform in most circumstances, all you need to have is your eyes, legs, and hands. It requires more concentration than when using a wand since you must focus your magic mentally directly at the target's legs.

First you must chose your target and concentrate at the legs and how you want them to move.

Once your focused, say the spell in syllables "Ta-ran-ta-lle-gra" while moving your own legs, like a stomp, and clapping with the same rhythm you say the spell. Once the spell takes effect you can stop clapping and stomping and just enjoy the performance. You may look this silly, but it will work:

The most important thing to make the spell work is your ability to concentrate, especially in a quick and effective way. This spell can work even if you don't say the incantation out loud if your focus is very good.

SPOILER (click to toggle) The spell I chose is the Silencing Charm, which incantation is Silencio (si-LEN-see-oh).

For the ritual, you only need a piece of paper, a thread and a needle. First, write the name of the person or the creature you wish to silence on the piece of paper. After that, you take your needle and thread and start sewing the thread over the name you've written down. While you're at this, say the incantation with a clear voice until you're finished. It's important to have a picture in mind of said person or creature. When you are done, the desired person or creature will be not able to speak or give louds anymore. You can only end this ritual charm by removing the thread from the name(as with a scissor or a knife) - therefore it's important to keep the piece of paper in a safe place as you obviously don't want to silence somebody forever (also, there are other spells or even rituals much more effective out there ;) ).

Paddy knew it wasn't a good idea to leave her homework until the final day of term, especially being a prefect.... but she'd been struggling over this assignment for a while, and had left it until she could think of some inspiration. Picking up her quill, she began to write, hoping that it was enough to award some house points.

SPOILER (click to toggle) The Summoning Charm is usually cast by wand, but what if it's your wand you want to summon? A ritual which could enable the summoning of your own (or indeed someone else's) wand would be as follows: First, you need to draw a rough image of the item you want to summon on a piece of paper. For a wand, a mere wand-shaped rectangle would be sufficient. Then you need to concentrate on the image, picturing it turning into the item you want to Summon. While still picturing the image in your head, fold the piece of paper in half saying "Accio" (pronounced AK-see-oh), then turn the paper 90 degrees clockwise. Continue folding and turning the paper, saying the incantation once for every fold, until you've done that 7 times. The item you were Summoning should now be flying towards you (if it's a large item, keep your wits about you as you don't want it to whack you on the head!)
