Good morning, students! I’m Appoline Persnickety, your Headmistress. Let me ask you a question: do you remember that fateful day you received that letter of acceptance from Hogwarts? I remember receiving my Hogwarts acceptance letter. I remember anxiously awaiting the day I would be walking the halls of Hogwarts and be among my fellow witches and wizards. Walking inside Hogwarts for the first time, learning the basics of magic and meeting whom soon became lifelong friends, I have many fond memories of my time at Hogwarts.

Today’s writing challenge is about first days of school. I’d like for you to write about your first day of school whether it be about your first impression of Hogwarts, your time on the train or your first day of classes. You can reflect about how you felt when you received your Hogwarts acceptance letter or how you felt as the Sorting Hat determined which house you’d exceed in. It doesn’t have to be about your first day in your first year. You can even write about your last first day of school.

Some rules for this challenge: 1.) Writings should be a minimum of 200 words. There is no maximum. 2.) Keep it PG13 please! 3.) Please post your piece of writing here with your name and house. 4.) Bonus points may be awarded to particularly clever/creative entries.

Each member may only submit one piece of writing, and each piece of writing to successfully adhere to the rules will receive 15 House Points!

This challenge will end on Monday, September 5th at 11:59PM.

The first time Kat walked through the wall of the train station at 9 ¾ was an interesting experience. Her parents were on an adventure out of the country so she would be making this trip alone. She stood there with bated breath. You have to be strong and just run through. She pondered maybe just turning around did she really want to make this trip for the first time alone? She then thought about all of the magical creatures she had encountered when living with her parents. The creatures she would encounter at Hogwarts drew her in. She smiled, took a deep breath, and ran. On the other side she was amazed. Wizards and witches walking around everywhere. The smoke billowed past her and she almost squealed with glee. Calm down Kat you don’t need to make a fool of yourself before meeting a friend. She walked forward toward the steps. Someone had already taken her bags. She made the step up and she was on the train ready for her first adventure! She found a compartment that had a few students inside. She walked in and said hello. A murmur of hellos echoed back at her. She smiled brightly, soon enough they were making conversation. These were also new students. The chocolate trolley rolled by and she got a chocolate frog. Weird when your food can jump out of your hand. She got a card with Dumbledore on it. Maybe someday she could be a headmaster. She shook her head, that was just silly.

The owl arrived at night, which was a little unusual, but more troubling than anything else, seeing as it was a full moon. My mother took the letter, and sent the owl back on its way before I could sense it was nearby, letting me read it once the sun had risen the next morning. I knew other werewolves had been at Hogwarts – I’d read all the books I could find that mentioned Professor Lupin, seeing as he was the first known Werewolf to attend the school. Of course I knew things would’ve changed since then, but I just hoped I would fit in. The train journey passed by too quickly and before I knew it, I was lined up with the other first years ready for Sorting. My parents hadn’t told me anything about how Sorting worked, other than there being four houses, so I was amazed that this old tatty-looking hat was able to tell us which house we’d be in! I was worried I’d end up in Slytherin, as I’d heard some rumours that the students in there aren’t very nice (which I discovered was untrue after I made friends with Sam), but I hadn’t anticipated ending up in the same House as my idol, Professor Lupin.

I remember when I got my letter to attend Hogwarts that I was sitting on top of the roof trying to look at the dragons coming out of the eggs not too far from my home, but apparently I didn't lived as close as I thought because I couldn't see anything and only could hear my mother calling me insistently about something important. I ignored her for a while, still trying to see the baby dragons, since she mostly called me for chores and I was not in the mood for that. Eventually she found me, scolded me, and gave me my letter with a smile. When I saw what it was I got so excited that I tore the letter in half when I jumped up and down but was able to read it since my mother fixed it instantly.

Saying goodbye was a little hard since my mother is all I had, but I was not going to miss this chance for anything in the world. I dream of this moment for long and now it was finally true. My eyes grew wide when I saw the train, it was much bigger than I imagined and there were many more wizards and witches than I expected. I wondered if I would fit in, if I would ever find a friend or would I always be the same lonely boy from the little village? Without having the answers, and I still don't, I went inside and sat by myself until a few other students got in. I didn't say anything, but they smiled and talked with each other while I pretend to read but was really listening to them talk about spells and professors that were mean or nice.

I have never been on a train before and I got a bit dizzy with the movement but luckily I didn't eat anything from the candy lady, but surely bought a few samples for later. We arrived a bit late and was feeling quite hungry by then so once on the ground I chew on a Pumpkin Pasties which tasted quite nice.

The boat ride was the best for me, even when I wished it wasn't that dark because I wished to see the creatures inside the lake, but still I felt free and more at home when close to nature. When I saw the castle my stomach shrunk, I felt an immense fear but also great excitement: this place was AMAZING! I couldn't wait to see in which house I would be sorted and was a bit surprised I was a Slytherin when I thought I might have been a Ravenclaw, but I guess I am happy with it. It doesn't really matter as long as I get to stay. The rooms weren't as nice as I wished, they kinda smell old despite being very clean, but I also wished there was more light since I like bright places. I guess my general experience was good but what you really want to know is how good the food was, right? I must say it was the best food I ever had!

Hogwarts Letter I'd fallen asleep in the bath, and had left the bathroom window open, as a neighbor was practicing the saxophone--and I assure you, listening to a skilled saxophonist while in the bathtub is truly enjoyable. I'd fallen asleep reading Hermione Granger's translation of Babbity Rabbity and the Cackling Stump, which I know because I was dreaming vividly about a giant rabbit rooted in the ground with tree antlers sprouting out of its head--an origin story for the jackalope, one could say. There was a flood of rabbits clambering atop the antlers to the point that they were spilling off of it, knocking each other over, and I was holding a sack running around trying to catch all the falling rabbits when one of them left out of the sack and jabbed me hard with a surprisingly pointy snout.

I yelped awake to an owl digging into my shoulder with a talon. I clambered out of the bath and stumbled half-awake into my room to find some Knuts for a tip, when I finally noticed the seal on the envelope. I started crying out of shock, then began laughing uncontrollably. I ripped open the envelope messily and quickly, a tumult of emotions bouncing through my chest. I was so excited to think about all the potential of Hogwarts—new friends, new places, and so much learning to experience!

Sorting Hat Rox was anxiously awaiting her turn for the sorting hat. All of her family members had been to Hogwarts and every single one of them had been accepted into Gryffindor. She knew her family would be disappointed if she wouldn’t make it in there. She counted the students that were in front of her in the row, only a couple more to go before it was her turn and she was feeling nervous about it. She almost felt like moving back to the end of the row only to delay the moment the sorting hat would tell her in which house she would be sorted. But before she knew it the moment was there, she took place at the stool and waited until the sorting hat was placed on her head. She was biting on her lip, crossed her fingers in hopes of getting good news. The sorting hat took it’s time to decide what it wanted to do with her, which made her even more nervous about the whole process. The hat told her that she would do great in Ravenclaw, but she would fit in with Gryffindor as well. In her mind she kept saying to herself she had to get into Gryffindor. Eventually the sorting hat told her that it would be Gryffindor. The sigh of relief must have been the biggest she had ever made in her life and she couldn’t wait to write her parents a letter to tell them the news.

I crept into the classroom hoping nobody would notice me. I felt out of place and miserable and sure that I would never make a friend or fit in. My life as a Muggle had been unhappy. My parents ignored me and as long as I kept out of their way and caused no trouble, it was as if I did not exist. When the owl arrived with the envelope and the letter to attend Hogwarts, I thought it was a chance to escape and accepted immediately. Now I was having second thoughts. Who was I to assume I was part wizard? My parents had never intimated the such. I felt out of place and at a loss. Just then Rox sat down at one side of me and Jem the other. They both turned to me at the same time and gave me such beaming smiles I could not help but smile back. They immediately began to question me, one after the other, asking things I knew nothing off. I put my head in my hands and began to sob quietly. I think it was then they realized that I was Muggle born and scared out of my wits. As one they each took one of my hands into their own, bonding with me, and we have been best friends ever since.

I have so many good memories of that first day, but I think one of my favourites was the train ride. After gathering all of the things I would need for school in Diagon Alley I stared at the brick wall, the one used to access Platform 9¾. I was nervous about charging head-first into the wall, but after a few deep breaths and some convincing from my parents I rushed through. My heart was beating like crazy. After hearing that train whistle though I wasn't filled with fear, but excitement. Before boarding I gave my parents one last hug, boarded the train, and then tried to find somewhere to sit. It wasn't long that I'd found an open seat with a couple other students. I was shy, like always, but I could tell they were good company. For a while I just watched everything soar by through the window and it all seemed incredibly beautiful. Eventually though the other students tried getting me to talk with them, which was fine. We got a few things from the lady with the trolley and talked about wizard cards, what magic we'd like to learn the most, and our families back home. One of them explained that their parents cared for magical creatures and we chatted about that for a long time before the train stopped and we were at Hogwarts. I'd hoped we'd all get sorted into the same house, but I had a feeling that either way we'd still be good friends.

My first day of classes

My first day at Hogwarts was a bit of a blur, honestly I can't believe I survived! But I will try to recollect it for you.

My day started out as what could be considered normal. I remember leaving the Slytherin common room, it was a sea of green and black robes all around me and I effectively made it to the great hall for breakfast. It was after breakfast that things started to get insane.

One minute I was with my classmates, reading my schedule, looking at my map and the next thing I know I was somewhere I wasn't familiar with. As I looked up and around there was older Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw students moving in a blur around me. I felt my heart begin to thump faster as I started to panic. Where was I? I tried to ask for directions...but my voice seemed tiny and so far away.

I was swept off into a smoky classroom with a bug-eyed professor covered in jewels, talking about palms. I tried to leave but she stopped me and motioned for my hand. She tsked saying I was in for a very bad day and shoved me back into my seat. She moved on but not before giving me a very sympathic look. It was...unnerving! I'll bide my time, I thought, wait for the class to be over and then try and find my classmates, a Prefect, SOMETHING! All the while a Hufflepuff held my hand and was comparing it to a diagram in her book.

As the class ended, I promptly got up to leave with everyone else. I went down the long staircase with the group which melded into a bigger group. Again I became turned around. I thought I saw some green in the distance and in desperation I followed it. The girl, along with her group, went outside. I thought this can't be right and went to turn around. Behind me even more students were coming at me. Again I got swept away, straight into one of the greenhouses. This time a dirty professor was talking about this weird, wiggling plant in front of us and what not to do. I was trying to pay attention, as I didnt want to upset the plant in front of me, when I suddenly got grabbed from behind! I cried out, which attracted the students around me, I was being dragged across the floor by a tendril! Then I was upside down. Some students were trying to help, shooting spells at the plant, while others ran for the professor. I tried to fight back against the plant but felt myself blacking out. The last thing I remember, in the darkness, was falling.

I then woke up in a low lit place. Everything was still a bit fuzzy and my body hurt all over. I tried to get up, which was no easy task. I knew I was late, how could this day get any worse? I promptly slid to the floor as a woman in white was hurrying towards me. I tried to tell her I was late but she wasn't having any of it. She put me back into now what I saw was a bed. The next 3 DAYS were spent having nightmares, seeing the blurry faces of my Slytherin friends and taking nasty medicine but I did come out of it.

FINALLY, after all that, I was able to return to the Slytherin common room. My friends had arrived upon my release to make sure I didn't get lost again. And I remember thinking that that odd bug-eyed teacher, from whatever class she had been teaching, had been right...and I never did find out the name of that plant that attacked me.

assignment

Garrett picked up his quill and pondered his new assignment. So much had happened since his first day of school, it was hard to remember that he hadn't always been here.

He sighed, thinking about the train, then smiled. The train was where he had met Fable. He remembered he had been nervous while looking for a place to sit with his cat Kiki, because the compartments had filled up so quickly. He hadn't expected anyone to let a vampire sit with them, but she had.

But, this isn't a story about love, he reminded himself, even though she had become as much a part of his life as the school itself was.

Garrett tapped the feather end of his quill against his lip, and looked around. It seemed all the other students were busy at work, and he had no idea what to write.

I'm hungry he thought, and sneaked out his charmed flask for a quick sip of blood. Blood always made things better, sometimes even helped him focus his thoughts. He slipped his flask back into his book bag, and thought of the Minions imitating Gru and saying "back to work, back to work." That made him laugh quietly.

He remembered how nervous he had been during the sorting ceremony, not because he was worried about what house he would get into ( although where else would they place someone like him..?) but the idea of stepping up in front of all those people...and having all their eyes on him...he shuddered, the memory of that night all too clear to him.

The hat...the hat was creepy..and dirty..and had been on lots of people's heads before his. He didn't want it on his head, nor have it talk to him.

He was surprised he didn't have nightmares after that incident.

Then it was over, and he was in House Slytherin, and very happy about it. He had walked over to the table...the table with SO many people, and thought 'how am I going to eat in a room with this many people at one table, let alone more tables ? I like to dine alone.' But, he had managed that night, and every day afterward.

He also didn't think he would be able to sleep in a room with other people, and for the first couple of nights, he slept poorly. After a few days of climbing stairs he was so tired that when it was lights out he didn't care anymore. He just drew his curtains shut and was dead to the world.

Garrett thought about all of this, and realized that the whole school experience so far had taught him that he could do a lot of things he didn't think he could, and not just magically. He had begun to believe he COULD do things where in the past he thought only about the negatives in a situation.

And so, Garrett picked up his quill and began to write.

"My name is Garrett, and my first day of school was the beginning of a whole new me...."

Elizabeth smiled at the assignment since she remembered attending Hogwarts for the first time pretty well. This day had been full of new and interesting impressions on her, so she sorted them in her mind before dipping her quill in the ink.

My assignment I knew I awoke early on September 1st and I must have been a small annoying ball of energy for my parents as I was so full of excitement. On top of my suitcase was a bag of freshly baked cookies; a farewell gift from my best friend Lotta. As it would have been suspicious when I don't write her for a year, my parents agreed to give her my letters in person since I couldn't send the owl directly to her.

When we reached platform 9 3/4, I was completely taken in by the scene. I remember people buzzing around, the engine emitting thick smoke and the feeling that it was as of now only a matter of time until I would arrive at Hogwarts. There was also this smell of machine oil which I oddly liked. As the train was already whistling, my parents pulled me in a quick but firm embrace, remembered me to pay attention in the lessons, work hard, but still have fun. My father leaned in closer and advised me to keep quiet about being able to speak with snakes as it would only make my life at Hogwarts rather difficult. I frowned a bit upon this, but not even Lotta knew so I was sure I could keep this secret longer. So I waved goodbye to my parents and boarded the train, pulling my suitcase and the small cage with Vincent, my cat, along until I found a completely free compartment. I set him free of his cage and he inspected the new place, then curled up on my lap to snooze. I looked out of the window and noticed that we were already leaving London slowly and as I was a bit flustered, I took one of the cookies because they remembered me of the home I would leave for a long time for the first time in my life. Don't get me wrong, I was really excited about Hogwarts, but I'm a creature of habit and new places and people made me nervous. Suddenly, one girl showed up at the door to ask me if this compartment was free, and I nodded. She was followed by other students until our compartment was full. Some of them seemed to be new students as well, others looked older and directly started talking. Vincent looked not amused about the loud chatter, but remained calm. I tried an approach and offered the others some of the cookies which they happily accepted. Curiously I listened to what they talked about and noticed that the elder students were from Hufflepuff and Gryffindor. This was the moment a thought crossed my mind. I never really wondered about my future house, but with my mother being a former Ravenclaw and my father a Slytherin, I somehow felt left out in the little group of students, so I simply smiled and started to stroke Vincent's fur against the direction of growth and he let out a small hiss to let me know what I was doing wrong. One of the older students laughed and claimed that my cat almost sounded like a snake and I joined the laughter in this awkward situation, but it was a shy laugh. I stayed silent for the rest of the journey, pretending to read a book. Some of the people in my compartment were first class like me, so we went to the boats together. As it was already getting dark, the lake looked strangely mysterious, but the most impressive was the castle with its lit windows. It was a huge medieval castle and the closer our boat floated, the more the castle seemed to grow. Happy that I didn't fell into the lake, a teacher guided us into the castle to the house ceremony. My gaze wandered over the tables and the students, which were mustering us novices curiously. As my family name started with a 'C', I was one of the first new students to put on the Sorting Hat. I didn't like how the older students were staring at me when I sat down on the chair. I felt like I was the most interesting person in the Great Hall at this time, which made me uncomfortable. I rather stayed for myself and nervously put on the hat, which sorted me into Slytherin within the blink of an eye. One can't say I wasn't surprised much and I was happy with my house. I was more concerned of what others would say if they found out that I'm a Parselmouth and placed in the Serpent House as well. I've read enough books to know that people were suspicious of those knowing the snake language.

To conclude, I have to say that the common room is cozy and enjoyable mysterious at the same time. As my house is down in the dungeons, my fear of heights is surely thankful that I was placed in Slytherin. The last thing I recognize from my first day is that I was really tired and exhausted because of all the new impressions and the long train ride, therefore I went to bed quite early, but eager fore the things that were yet to come.

Lapis Lazuli, Ravenclaw I remember how heavy the Sorting Hat felt when it was placed on my head. My eyes kept jumping between the smiling, jolly faces at the long table beneath the black and yellow badger banner and the somewhat haughty, intent faces clustered under the red and gold lion standard. Hufflepuff or Gryffindor. It had to be one or the other, seeing as my father was Gryffindor, my mother Hufflepuff. Right?

The Hat was speaking but I was too nervous to pay close attention...something about apples not falling far from trees, but maple seeds spinning far from the branch from whence they came...

Which is right about the time the Hat called out, "Ravenclaw!"

For the first time I dared to glance at the long table of quiet, inquisitive students. My new housemates! I'd never even considered that this could be my house. But the moment the decision was made, it felt as if it had always been the only true option.

Magnus frowned wishing he didn't need to do this assignment. It wasn't like he couldn't, but he didn't particularly care to share this one. To him it felt very private for him and his new family. With a grimace on his face he began to write down his story.

My parents adopted me a few weeks before my tenth birthday. Adopting a werewolf was not without some risk but they didn't seem to care. I had learnt all about Hogwarts and the magical community when I was attacked at 9 years old. However, the question was would I be allowed to attend Hogwarts? The day of my eleventh birthday arrived. I went down to breakfast to discover a pile of presents at the ready. The surprise on my face must have been evident because Mum laughed. "Did you think we weren't going to buy you presents?" she asked.

I'm pretty sure I mumbled yes. Mum and Dad watched as I opened my presents. They had gotten me lots of drawing supplies and sketch books, along with books, a plant and a moving model dragon. I couldn't stop smiling and thanking them all for the wonderful gifts. Then Mum served us all breakfast and an owl swooped in dropping a letter onto my head. It was my Hogwarts letter. Everyone was so excited. Both Mum and Dad kept rubbing my head and congratulating me. Then after breakfast, they whisked me off to Diagon Alley. I protested because they had already given me so much but they weren't listening and we wound up at Magical Menagerie. I looked at the fantastic animals, a little weary because some animals don't get on to well with werewolves. An orange Persian cat wound herself around my legs mewing and purring. I petted her and started cooing to her. She was so pretty. The next thing I know I was carrying her and spluttering "thank yous" to my parents.
I had some leftover kippers as a snack that afternoon and when my new cat stole some I named her Kippers. I spent the day drawing and playing with the very first pet I'd ever had. At tea, my parents surprised me again with a birthday cake. It was a perfect day.

~Magnus Lee, Ravenclaw.

Magnus smiled thinking of his parents who clearly loved him. He loved telling people about his parents but at the same time he just wanted that day to stay private. Still, he sealed his work and wandered off to the owlery. It had been two days since he had wrote them last, which was a scandalously long time.

Assignment Eros' left hand gripped on the strap of the backpack that hung over one shoulder. In his other hand, he held onto the handle of a small luggage on wheels. The child was lone, standing in the middle of King's Cross Station, surveying his surrounding. It was the first day of September and the station was busy. There were a lot of adults, but a lot of children as well. However, Eros had a hard time discerning which of them were muggles and which were wizards.

It was the first day at a new school, a wizarding school. Eros wasn't feeling any particular kind of way about attending Hogwarts, though. He was neither excited nor nervous. School was school, even if it was of the magical sort. To him, it was just another obligation. At the moment, there was mostly a sense of indifference. Spells and potions weren't of any particular interest to the boy. Eros was more the athletic type, so if there was anything that he was looking forward to, it would be Quidditch.

"Hey!," a voice to the left called out.

Eros turned his head to see a girl walk towards. He didn't move, but kept his eyes on here, not sure if she was talking to him or not.

"You're a first year, right? Are you looking for the Hogwarts Express?," she asked when she was about a meter from him. She didn't wait for his answer. "Follow me, most newbies have a hard time getting to the platform," she said and began walking.

Eros' gaze followed her until she was several meters ahead of him. He then began walking after her. They arrived at a metal box diving platform nine and ten where the girl stopped and quickly looked to the boy with a smirk before continuing forward.

She disappeared.

Eros stared at the metal ticket box that the girl just walked through. His jaw dropped a little, although he wasn't sure why he was surprised. A platform for a magical train to a magical school to learn magic would be expected to be hidden away from the muggles. Eros looked around to see if anyone around notice the girl just disappear. No eyes in that particular direction. They were all too busy and self-consumed. The coast was clear. Eros took a deep breath, then followed in pursuit, power walking right through the metal.

On the other side, magic awaited.

SPOILER (click to toggle) Millie wasn't surprised she received her acceptance letter from Hogwarts. She had been showing signs of being a witch since a young age. She had known her father had gone to Hogwarts and and helped in the Battle of Hogwarts. She was so excited to get her first Hogwarts uniform and all her school supplies from Diagon Ally.

When it came time to leave, she found herself very nervous. She had traveled aboard before but not without her parents. Her mum gave her a plate of coffee cake to share, in hopes it would allow her to make friends more easily. She reminded Millie there were other first years as well who felt the same way. Her father gave her a few galleons in case she wanted something to eat from the trolley.

Millie boarded the train and found a half full compartment. She joined them and offered the cake. She introduced herself and chatted with everyone in the compartment. She eventually fell asleep and before she knew it, the train was pulling into Hogsmeade.

After a boat ride, she found herself entering the castle. It took her breath away. She Saw older students with the house robes and became even more excited. She was expecting to be placed into Ravenclaw because she took her studies very seriously. And she had heard children of former Hogwarts students tended to be sorted into the parent's house. When it was time, she was led into the Great Hall where she lost her breath again. It was so beautiful, with the candles floating. And the food smelled amazing. She then realized she didn't eat on the train and was famished. She stood third to last in line because of her last name, Tudor. The Sorting Hat presented it's new poem for the year and everyone in the cheered. She found the Ravenclaw table and told herself, "okay. That's where you're going to go. So don't get lost and look silly". Finally her name was called, "AMELIA TUDOR!". She took a deep breath and sat down on the stool. The hat was placed upon her head and it spoke. "Well. Well. You are as kind as you are intelligent. You take your studies seriously but you take you loyalties to heart. So... HUFFLEPUFF!" She slide off the stool, feeling weak in her legs. She wasn't expecting to be sorted into Hufflepuff. Everyone was cheering her, she couldn't think straight. She was gently nudged towards the Hufflepuff table. It felt like she was under water. She sat down in the empty seat and older Hufflepuffs greeted her warmly. Smiling, patting her back, and offering her bowls of food that she could barely hold. She knew then she was meant to be a Hufflepuff.

After dinner, she meet with the other new Hufflepuffs and the Perfects. They went over some housekeeping and were led to the common room, down stairs. One of the Perfects said, "If you notice this lovely fruit pear on this lovely painting, you may just lead to some place important if you ever get hungry while studying or any other time a meal isn't served. Hint hint." She was led into the common room and for the third time, lost her breath. It was so cozy and beautiful. She knew she would have no problems living here for the next 7 years. She was introduced to the rest of the house and led to her room and assigned a bunk. Her trunk was already at the foot of the bed. She thought she was too exited to go sleep but was surprised as she laid down on the comfy bed.

The following morning at breakfast, she was given her class schedule. She had Herbology first period, followed by flying. The morning went so fast, she was surprised it was lunch time. She ate lunch and went to her other classes. Before she knew it, the day was over and she was sitting at dinner. She was so happy to be at Hogwarts and she had already made several friends. She knew she had to write to her friend Emmett, who attended Durmstrang and tell him all about it. But she decided it would have to wait till the end of the week. The rest of the week went by quickly and she was settling into Hogwarts wonderfully. She couldn't wait to learn all about magic.

Megan wasn't nervous until she reached the Sorting Ceremony. All through the train ride all she felt was excitement and anticipation. No there she was with her fellow first years, waiting to be sorted into their House.

She had heard many things about the different houses, varying from Gryffindor being that of the Brave, where the Golden Trio had been sorted. Hufflepuff, where loyalty was valued most and friendship came naturally. Ravenclaws were valued for their wit and intelligence, and also their kindness though many people forgot to add that part. And then Slytherin, ambitious and cunning; apparently it produced the darkest wizards, although Megan did like to keep an open mind. She wasn't particularly worried about what House she would be put in, she felt she had characteristics from all Houses. She was mostly worried she wouldn't fit into her House.

"Megan Belcrox!" came the shout, making her jump. She started forward without realising it and sat upon the stool to place the hat atop her head. Once she felt the pressure on her head she closed her eyes and heard a voice in her ear.

"Where to put you, that is the question. There's so much going on in that head of yours, difficult to pick!" the hat was pondering aloud, making her more nervous. "No opinion eh? Peculiar behaviour indeed! You have the bravery of a Gryffindor, the loyalty of a Hufflepuf. The intelligence of a Ravenclaw and the ambition of a Slytherin but which one, which one? I sense heart in you, young one. You've got a long road but you're going to be perfect in HUFFLEPUFF!!"

The last was said in a shout and the hall erupted; Megan smiled and politely removed the hat from her head before rushing to her new table hoping the hat was right and that her heart would be enough to win over her new House.

Aria Quin - Gryffindor

Aria aimed a playful splashed directly at Dax as he squirted water from his beak towards her face. "Hey! You're too good at aiming!" She squealed while squinting her eyes. Aria and Dax continued to play in the cold water, enjoying the gentle waves of the ocean. Aria looked up towards the northern sky and noticed that a storm was approaching rather quickly.

"We should hurry and get out of here, she said while pointing to Dax. "That storm appears rather ominous."

Dax looked up, 'I agree,' he said in his mind voice but continued squirting water at Aria.

Aria giggled and ran out of the water, getting sand all over her feet and legs. Dax flew from the water and landed on the towel Aria had laid out without getting any sand on him. He smiled at her and tilted his head to the right, 'Don't you wish you could fly!' he said in a playfully taunting voice.

"You know I do," she said while looking up at the clouds, pondering the idea of flying through them. She was about to look away when she noticed a bird flying through the storm clouds, heading in her general direction. "Look at that!" She pointed out to Dax. "That poor guy can hardly fly straight in those strong winds," she commented while watching the bird flutter against the wind.

As the bird approached she could see that it was a brown owl. 'It appears to be an owl,' Dax pointed out, 'and he is carrying something.' Dax grew extremely excited and started sending Aria mental feelings of exuberant anticipation. He looked at Aria with great joy in his eyes as the owl approached.

"Why are you so giddy?" She asked and ruffled his head feathers.

'You'll see,' he said in a voice that was hardly able to contain his happiness.

The owl flew overhead and dropped a piece of paper over Aria's head. The paper floated down until it rested in her hands. It's a letter!" Aria exclaimed in excitement.

Dax nodded his head and was almost dolling, he was so thrilled. 'Open it! Open it!' he said in excited mind chatter while prancing around on the towel.

With great curiosity Aria opened the letter addressed to her. "It is from Hogwarts, School of Witchcraft and Wizarding," she said while reading. "It is inviting me to attend school there!" She said in shock and disbelief. "What is this place?" She asked while looking up at Dax.

Dax took off and flew circles in the air while screeching happily. 'I knew it! I just knew it! That is the reason we can communicate, Aria!' Dax said, 'but I was not absolutely sure until now.' He settled back on the ground. 'Aria, you are a witch!' He said with wide eyes, staring deeply into her surprised eyes.

Aria looked up, "I am?" She questioned while thinking about it. She had noticed that she was very different from the other kids she had known. She read the letter again and this time smiled. "It looks like we are going to Hogwarts," she said with a feeling welling up inside her that was hard to place. The joy and apprehension consumed her and she sat on the ground, just soaking in all the new information.

'Don't worry,' Dax comforted her, 'I'll be by your side the entire time and you'll make friends plenty fast.' Dax rubbed against Aria and let her pet him.

Aria just sat and stared into the storm clouds. I could fly, she thought, I can really do it!

Sadie's First Day Excited to learn? You better believe Sadie Holland was excited to learn. However, there were a few subjects she was excited about more than any of the others: Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Charms. They seemed the most practical and the most enjoyable. Who wanted to fiddle around with potions and plants when you could be shooting stunners at enemies or turning your little sister into a naked mole rat?

Sadie went down to breakfast the first day of classes, eager to receive her timetable. She wolfed down her eggs and bacon and was just about to pick up a bit of toast before Professor Makshi started making her way down the opposite end of the Hufflepuff table. Sadie immediately dropped the piece of toast and sat up straight to crane her neck. It would take forever before the Hufflepuff Head of House would make it to her!

Sadie noticed that the other students around her didn't seem to be as excited as she was--in fact, some were looking at her as she practically floated out of her seat in puzzlement. You would expect that kind of behavior from a Ravenclaw. Sadie glanced around the table and then lowered herself back onto her seat on the bench with a sheepish grin and resigned herself to her toast.

After what felt like hours, Professor Makshi was finally upon her. She looked up at the Transfiguration teacher with hopeful eyes.

"Miss Holland, correct? Yes, here you are," Professor Makshi said with a smile as she handed her the timetable. Sadie quickly unrolled the parchment as the professor walked away.

It was terrible. Awful! How could they do this? Sadie's mouth hung open. She wouldn't have any of the subjects she fancied until Wednesday. She sunk lower. History of Magic, double Herbology, and Astronomy all on the first day. She wouldn't get to use her wand at all! In a dramatic overreaction, she allowed her forehead to collide with the table with a loud THUNK.

This was not going to be a good first day.

Keliora, Ravenclaw After receiving my letter to come to Hogwarts, I was so excited! I eagerly made trip after trip to Diagon Alley to make sure I had everything I would need (and a trunk big enough to hold it all!). Getting on the train was exhilarating – walking into what looks like a solid wall went against every bit of common sense I had grown up with, but was so worth it to see Platform Nine and Three Quarters in all its glory.

What I was most nervous about was what house I would be sorted into. I had read up on all the different houses, and could not figure out which one would be the best fit for me! They all seemed to match different parts of my personality. I possessed the cunning of a Slytherin, the wit of a Ravenclaw, the stubbornness of a Gryffindor, and the kindness of a Hufflepuff. I wondered if it was possible to split time between houses!

When it finally came time for my name to be called, I nearly tripped over my own feet on my way to the stool. I plopped the hat on my head and was startled to hear it talking right away! The shock of it completely dissolved my nerves. After going through all the same scenarios that I had run before based on my research and examining my personality, the Sorting Hat realized my boredom and the cause of it, and loudly declared "RAVENCLAW"!
