Being new, I wanted to do as many quests as I could and get my account going... but when progressing in the Shinwa quests, I kept running into this:

"Oh No! Oh, no! Apparently you haven't quite worked out how to get to the Omen Islands yet! I suppose you probably need to put together an unknown map!"

I'm guessing this is like the map pieces in Neopets? Would they be available in shops? Is it worth it?

Yup, it's quite similar to on Neopets. x)

To access Omen Islands you need to gather the 9 map pieces; Uncharted Land Map Piece etc. You can find them all on the shop search, or you can hope to find them through random events while browsing the site. A lot of them are very cheap right now and the rest are relatively inexpensive though, so buying them wouldn't be a bad thing for quick access to the islands!

Finally, you put all the pieces together here, accessible from the games page.

I'd call it very worth it. It gives you access to a new land, an additional quest-giver, an extra vending machine, Merana (to turn your pets hydrus), lets you access the Rathskeller Inn (I think?), and finally gives you access to a holiday shop that is only open during Keel Hauliday, which starts on the 19th of next month! c:
