“Hello students! My name is Gwendolen Kavanagh but you may call me Nan if it is easier for you.” With a warm smile, she continues “I asked the Headmistress if I could visit Hogwarts with the hope that you could help me. Back at my farm, while observing my garden, I started wondering what would happen if non-magical plants were given magic. I started experimenting with some succulents, casting a spell to awaken the innate magical properties of each one. For example, some are mood detectors and change colors depending on the emotions surrounding it, while others may help a person levitate a few inches of the ground.”

Several plants are arranged behind Nan Kavanagh, each one beautiful in its own way. Nan walks over to the blackboard where, with a swift wand movement, a diagram of the basic and common parts of the plants appears.

Turning around, she explains, “I have all of these plants that seem to vibrate with energy and magic but there are so many I can’t figure them all out. I hope you can provide the help I need to discover what all these beautiful plants can do!”

Your assignment today is to choose a plant and explain what type of magic it has, what spells and/or wand movements (if any) are necessary to activate its magical properties, and what uses (both mundane and magical) the plant would have. This is an essay question. You may submit up to three different plants with the required information. All students who participate in helping Nan Kavanagh figure out the magical power of ordinary plants will be awarded a maximum of 15 House Points. If you need assistance Gwendolen Kavanagh will be around to help. If a spell or magical attribute submitted seem like it might work, Nan might try it out while visiting!

SPOILER (click to toggle) First, I've chosen the Haworthia, which is a small succulent and belongs to the subfamily Asphodeloideae. The Haworthia is generally a miniature aloe and has soft leaves in which their magical properties are situated. This plant is even used in the Muggle World by African tribes against stomach troubles.

The charm to stimulate the magical powers of the Haworthia is 'Plantaria Revelio', while drawing a circle with the wand from the outer leaves to the inner leaves. The plant will start to rustle with its leaves a little and the stripes on them will glow golden for a while. After this, one can cut the leaves and cook them to gain a brew which will not only help agains stomach troubles but also works as an reliable antidote. Furthermore, the juice directly taken from the leaves is antibacterial.

Another plant that caught my eye is Marigold. These flowers are easy to grow and don't require complicated care. Because they are full of the orange-yellow carotenoid lutein, it's used as a natural food colour. It's also possible to make tea from its leaves, which tastes a bit like anise. In healthcare industry, the flower is also used as a provider of Lutein, which helps elder people to mantain their eyesight.

The magical powers are awakened by using 'Lumos' and pointing it at the flower. Keeping magical Marigold in your sleeping room can trigger prophetic dreams and opens the inner eye as well - therefore it's really useful for Divination.

And then, there is Fennel. It's vegetable, spice and healing plant all in one. This plain plant is used worldwide and often consumed as curative tea.

Pointing the wand at the umbels and speaking 'Facere Herba', the yellow umbels will start to grow until they gently touch the wand-holder. The touch is similar to the effect of the Wit-Sharpening Potion; which makes the consumer bright, cunning and more inventive. However, it won't last as long as the potion, but its advantage is the easy procedure. One should be aware that excessive use of magical Fennel can result in the exact opposite of wit, so the user should be careful.

Lapis Lazuli, Ravenclaw

The Succulents Lapis lingers along the table of shining, sparking, humming plants that stands behind Nan. Eventually she chooses three small pots containing a zephyranthes, an iris and an orchid.

The Zephyranthes (Rain Lily)

Rain lilies are hardy and easy to grow. They have no known medicinal or nutritious value, and most of the parts of the plant are actually poisonous. After examining the plant for quite some time and attempting to activate the plant's magical properties with multiple incantations, Lapis desperately uses alohomora in an attempt to make the flower do anything at all. Upon doing so, tiny little pink clouds puff rapidly out of the flower's stamen. The scent of the flower becomes overwhelmingly sweet and strong for a minute or two, then fades back to normal.

The Iris

While the iris can provide wonderful woven fibers, the bulb is often toxic and the rest of the plant has no medicinal value. Lapis knows a bit about the hardiness of the iris bulb, however, and tried casting several wand movements over the soil at the base of the flower. A spiraling circular movement causes an iridescent bubble to form around the flower, forming a strong but pliable shield that lasts several minutes.

The Orchid

Orchids are known for their beauty, but they can also be used in foods, such as the Turkish drink called salep. Vanilla also comes from orchid fruit. Chinese Ground Orchid is used in Chinese medicine to stop excessive bleeding. Lapis has no clue what to do to unlock any potential effects from the orchid, so she begins reciting charms from her first year notes. "...lumos...muffliato...nox..." As soon as the word "nox" leaves her lips, the orchid begins to glow brighter. Suddenly Lapis' vision simply isn't.

"Nan! NAN! Oh, oh dear. I think my orchid blinded me. A bit of help? Please?"

((There are some that are not succulents, but if you want to use other plants keep them on the smaller side. Also keep in mind they would need to be on the stronger side to be able to try magic on them without harming the plant. For example an aloe plant or a cactus might be a better option than an orchid. Nan is quite an avid herbologist so she could have brought any type of plants, so have fun with it! I am excited to see what you come up with!))

"Oh my dear child! What have you been trying to do?" Quickly Nan Kavanagh let a gentle water stream out of the tip of her wand letting it fall over Lapis's eyes. Taking from her small pouch a small vial with some ointment and dabbing a little under each of Lapis eyes "You can open them now. It seems you made your orchid a lamp! Even though this assignment was an essay you made it a practical one. Very bold move, but that said the mixture of the pink puffs and the light you managed to produce from your spell combined in making the light be brighter. It seems you created a reaction between your plant species! It is quite interesting. I will give you a little hint... once the lilies are awoken magically the flowers become edible. The puffs you saw is the way for the plant to release any toxins. This one being so small it is perfectly safe, but keep in mind to not breathe so closely when experimenting." Nan laughed "I ended up with green hair and a horn for a week! That cactus really didn't like me!" ()

Merlin Pendragon, Slytherin I walked closer to the plants to see which one grabs my attention or which ones I could identify, but all seem to grab my attention since I love plants and nature. So I randomly pic one, Sedum morganianum, also known as Burro's Tail or Donkey's Tail which is the same just that Burro is in Spanish. This plants are normally susceptible to over-watering so being magically enhanced may have changed that? Since I wanted to test it, I used the spell Aguamenti. First time nothing happened, so I did it a couple of extra times and changed the wand movements, when a circular movement was used the plant's stems lift to upward position and begin changing colors very slowly. I waited to see if anything else happened and after a few minutes it stopped changing colors and went back to the original position, but this time it had beautiful red flowers bigger than the steams. I took a flower in hand and it smelled like a fruit so I decided to taste it, which I probably shouldn't have but did anyway. After I swallow it my head felt warm, too warm. I was starting to panic when I noticed my hands were turning red but the redness went a way after a minute and all the scratches and cuts I had in me were gone. So it seems to have healing properties for small wounds, hopefully no side effect, and I can't prove if it works for bigger wounds as well.

Next I got near a Euphorbia milii commonly known as Crown of Thorns. This shrub has slender spines and the sap is moderately poisonous, and causes irritation on contact with skin or eyes. If ingested, it causes severe stomach pain, irritation of the throat and mouth, and vomiting. So I won't try tasting anything from this one for sure, just in case. I had no idea what to try so I started reciting spells, many that I probably shouldn't have even try them, but with one of the spells i used, Lumos, the plant grew a few centimeters instantly, so it seems to be susceptible to light. I wouldn't place it in a very bright place, what if it grows too big? I really couldn't think of much and the plant was doing nothing so I gave up, but before I did I said "Oppugno" trip a little with a pot next to my feet and direct the attack to another plant near this one.

It was the Aloe vera, which is highly used by muggles for skin irritation, burns, minor cuts, and even used to improve digestion among other things. After it was hit with the spines of the Crowns of Thorns I didn't know what to expect. Would it die or would it have other effect? Maybe it didn't even penetrate the rough skin of the aloe, but I looked closer and there were two spines stuck on one leaf. That specific leaf changed color to a yellowish green in comparison to the rest. I though it would surely die but it looked healthy, so I cut the tip of the leaf to see if the inside was any different than I remembered, and it was. Inside the gelatinous substance had turned even more yellow than the leaf, and I touched it and spread it on my fingers. Now they were yellow too and smelled terrible, it looked like dragoon boogers to me, so I tried cleaning it off against my robes without luck. My fingers were yellow and stinking really bad, what if my skin rotten?! I didn't wanted to be paranoid but the tip I cut had spilled so much goo that I was standing on a puddle of it. My shoes turned yellow but at least they didn't melt. "Tergeo" Even when the mess was gone and the leaf was not dripping anymore, my shoes were still yellow and so were my fingers. I really had no idea if it would do anything else but I was hoping my fingers turned back to normal at least. I washed my hands with soap and water and the color was gone, but the skin was as soft as baby's skin. "Wow" Maybe the plant increased it's properties and was more effective than before. Now I wonder if the Crown of Thorns was not poisonous anymore or if the poison was beneficial to the Aloe Vera. So I went back and sting myself with a spine and waited. I didn't feel anything unusual so I wrote it down in my notes, went back to the Aloe and tried a few more spells on it and it turned out that every time I made a spell it did the opposite! If that was true, could it means the poison only made it better and that I did had poison in my system??

I turned around to call the Professor and before I could, I start throwing up flowers, the same flowers that grow on the Crown of Thorns. Everyone looked at me in shocked and amusement but I couldn't stop myself. I tried to call for help but one of the students called upon Gwendolen Kavanagh while I filled the place with flowers and I had the feeling I would be scolded badly for experimenting on myself. At least the plant was not poisonous, I think, because I felt fine but just couldn't stop the flowers propelling from my mouth.

my lesson

Garrett walked up to the table, looking at all of the plants. He decided on a yarrow plant (Achillea Millefolium) with its tiny delicate white flowers and yellow centers and myriad of feathery leaves. It didn't look like it could kill him if things went wrong.

Walking back to his table, he carefully set the plant down, and considered what his course of action would be. It was such a fragile looking plant, but it intrigued him.

Garrett pulled out his wand, and cast a Supersensory Charm. He wanted to enhance his senses so that he would be able to pick up more information from the plant once he cast his other spells. He hoped as well that it would help him to sense things from the plant he would not normally be able to sense.

He focused hard on just the plant, and tried to tune out the sights and sounds around him.

Next he cast Legilimens, and touched the fingers of one hand to his temple, and the fingers of the other hand to the plant, as an attempt to Vulcan mind meld with it and enhance the spell. He hoped the plant would be receptive to his connection, but he had no idea just what he would perceive from a plant.

He saw the room start to fade away, and found himself on an ancient Greek battlefield. He saw a man in armor bending over him and felt some of himself taken. He watched as the man put some white flowers on his bleeding wound, and the blood flow lessoned. The man smiled, and he felt more of himself be separated. The man walked away with many flowers in his hands, and began to treat his soldiers wounds.

Then the scene before him changed, and he was in a smoky hut, hanging from the ceiling. He watched as an old woman used his tiny white flowers to make various things for people to drink, or added them to salves to be rubbed on their bodies. The people looked grateful, and she looked happy to help them.

As Garrett began to return to himself, he felt the pride of the plant, the pride of being able to help ease the pain and suffering of others.

Garrett took a deep breath, and removed his hands from the plant and his temple. He knew this was a very special plant, but he also felt there was more the plant could do than he had previously seen.

Garrett pulled out his wand again, and cast Specialis Revelio, hoping that this spell would reveal the plant's hidden secrets and magical properties.

The plant began to glow green softly, and the petal centers turned a pleasant shade of pale pink. Garrett guessed that the plant may have Pink Magic, which he had read about but had never seen in use. He also deduced it would have Healing Magic, since it could heal wounds and alleviate pain.

Garrett reached out toward the tiny flowers. He felt the energy of the plant connect with him, and too late he remembered he hadn't ended his other spell.

Garrett was overwhelmed with images and sounds....

he was an old man who was sick and coughing, then drank a cup of tea, and he felt his lungs relax and his breathing become even

now he was a middle aged woman with a horrible pain in his mouth, who chewed on some flowers and felt his tooth stopped hurting

then he was a young child who had painful red areas on his arm and was crying, and a kind woman rubbed something soothing on it, and the pain stopped

now he was an adult woman who was doubled over in pain, with horrible cramps..he held onto his abdomen with one hand, and managed to drink something from a cup. he sighed in relief as the pain lessened and he was able to sit upright

then he was a pale man with a nasty looking wound, feeling sick and feverish. there was some thick paste put on the wound, and he felt the fever break, and the pain subside as the wound started to heal, and the color returned to his face

now he was an elderly man in pain, bent and with swollen, crooked fingers. he tried to hold a cup, and sip from it. he felt his pain subside as the swelling receded, and with a few creaks and groans stood upright for the first time in years

there was a large brewing vat, and he saw himself standing beside it, frowning, with a bitter taste in his mouth, then he was adding baskets of the flowers to the liquid inside of it, then later sipping a sweet sample and nodding his approval

he saw himself as a young woman eating a mixed salad with the white flowers, and felt himself glow with health

then he was a skeletal woman laying on a bed, too weak to move, being forced to drink from a cup, struggling to spit it out, but could only swallow....and suddenly feeling a ravenous hunger and will to live...

Garrett pulled his hand away with a loud cry, and fell off of his chair onto the floor. In a panic he tried to swat away all of the images that had started to blur together, but had just enough presence of mind to cast Finite Incantatum, and the images quickly faded.

Shaking, he got to his feet, and sat down heavily. He ran his hand through his hair and saw that people were staring at him. He blushed deeply, and busied himself getting out parchment and ink to write down all that he had seen.

Even though he was shaken up, he realized he had never felt healthier in his whole life. He looked suspiciously at the still glowing yarrow, with it's pretty white petals and pink centers, and swore he felt it smile at him. He shook his head at the notion, then a slow smile spread across his face, and he began to write.

Paddy - Gryffindor Paddy wasn't a great one for plants, but she had been growing a couple of cacti at home during the holidays, and recognised a similar plant behind Nan. Carefully carrying the pot back to her desk, she stared at it for a while. Looking at the arrangement of flowers around the top, she figured it was a Mammillaria hahniana (Birthday Cake Cactus), and wondered if that might be related to its hidden magical properties.

Flicking through her spell book, she soon realised there wasn't a specific spell for this plant already, and picked up her wand. She didn't want to use "Incendio" as she thought the entire plant might be set alight, but wondered if something similar might work. Quickly looking through an old Latin dictionary her Uncle had given her several years ago, she waved her wand and said "Lucernas accendunt" (Light Candles), and watched with excitement as the flowers all produced seemingly harmless little flames at the end, just like real candles on a birthday cake.

Grinning, she realised that maybe these cacti were even more interesting to grow than she'd first thought.

crab cactus / Christmas Cactus Jem gravitated towards the crab cactus instantly--they had covered the windowsills of many childhood homes and held great nostalgia for her, but she'd never thought to feel out its magical capacity.

With her dragon-hide gloves on, Jem cupped her hands around a blossom and closed her eyes. The air was full of students casting spells, and she wanted to see if the plant was reacting to anyone's particular magic. It stayed almost perfectly still, until Merlin started vomitting flowers a few feet away, and it began vibrating steadily in her hands.

Diffindo, she cast, severing the blossom from the plant, and it dropped into her hand. It hummed even louder now, as she brought it to her mouth and bit off a petal.

Jem inhaled through her nose, and gently exhaled through her mouth.

The air coming out of her mouth felt cold, like the chill from a refrigerator. Hm. This feeling reminds me of the Tongue-Tying Curse, she thought. With the exception of her tongue trying to curl backwards into itself.

Putting down the rest of the flower, she cast Mimblewimble at it. The flower petals immediately all curled back. She paused for just a moment, almost debating whether or not to commit to this--heck, it's Hogwarts, every other idea is a bad idea--then swallowed the whole flower.

This time, when she exhaled, she could feel ice forming inside her mouth, rapidly spreading across the walls of her cheeks. She grabbed a mirror out of her bag, making sure her mouth stayed open as the ice continued to layer over itself and she felt her jaw lock. Looking in the mirror, her mouth looked like a small ice cave, with ice stalactites and stalagmites jagged across her teeth.

Jem went to go find Nan and tapped her on the shoulder.

Plant Experimentations

Fable was eager to do this lesson. She loved plants and the opportunity to experiment with them was exciting. She waited her turn for the table. Her eye already on three different plants that she was familiar with, having grown them at home. When it came her turn she eagerly filled her arms with three plants, a Norfolk Pine, a Hens and Chicks Succulent and a Poinsettia and eagerly made her way back to the work area to begin.
Fable had seen these plants around every Christmas season and always had a soft spot for them. She knew most people thought of them as disposable, just like the Christmas cactus or the Poinsettia, but those willing to love and care for them, would find that they would continue to grow and could be decorated season after season.

She knew the Norfolk pine could grow well over 200 feet in the right conditions and live for hundreds of years but her plan wasn't to make it bigger, but rather keep it compact. She also wanted to encourage the plant to grow pine cones that would mimic Christmas lights and to top it off with a strengthening charm to make sure it could support the pine cones, fight off nasty pests and handle more climates. There was very little information on the power of the Norfolk pine, she simply found two words on its strengths, which puzzled her. Protection and Anti-hunger. Well, she thought, thats odd but she was determined to go through with the experiment anyway. She wanted people to experience the same beauty she did when she looked at the plant.

Fable started with an Awakening charm on the plant. It gave a positive shudder which urged her to continue.

She then raised her wand and cast a Crop strengthening charm. The charm hit the plant, seemingly absorbed by it, but not much had happened. Fable took note of this and continued.

She then cast another charm to encourage the growth of the plants natural "fruit". The plant gave a shutter and slowly small pine cones the size of cherries came out. Excited Fable promptly cast a color changing charm on the pine cones. Again the plant took to the spell and pine cones began to flash colors, just like little lights. Fable wrote this down in her notes. She was so excited and happy at this point she thought she was going to burst. Then one of the pine cones fell off and rolled towards her.

Fay picked up the little pine cone. It was still changing colors and it looked like a pine cone but it had the smell and feel of fruit. She carefully cut the fruit open to examine it. Once open the smell was stronger. A spiced plum smell with undertone of cooked nuts. It smelled delicious. Fay decided to test the fruit for edibility and one test after another the fruit passed. She then tentatively placed the fruit in her mouth. The seeds inside tasted like mini pine nuts while the fruit was indeed some sort of spiced berry or plum. It was delicious! It suddenly dawned on her why the plant had the power of anti-hunger. She eagerly leaned in to inspect more of the berries when its second power came shockingly apparent.

As Fay was gently moving the branches, inspecting the berries and taking notes. The plant opened a mouth like space and two eyes and leaped towards her in a singular frightening motion! This caused Fable to scream out in shock and drop her clipboard. Embarrassed, as her scream had caused her classmates to look, she picked up her wand and moved slowly forward.

The plant didn't move. The berries continued to flash. It seemed just as it had been before. She wondered if she was going crazy. Was she seeing things? Fay leaned down and picked up her clipboard shaking her head. As she was righting her objects, having spazzed out and knocked them all over, the plant scared the crap out of her again! This time she didn't run away but yet forced herself to observe the plant. It had a mouth, the needles on its branches made it seem like it had teeth, but there were none and the little beady eyes were more mischievous rather then dangerous. It used a few branches as sort of mock appendages to make it seem like it was grabbing at you. Fable couldn't help but smile. This was fantastic...and hilarious.

She continued to experiment with the little pine by putting things around it. She was hoping it would serve as a sort of guardian and she wanted to see how violent it would become. Indeed the little pine would wait for the opportunity to scare the intruder back, but it was never maliciously violent and all the while it was protecting the items around it.

Fable smiled at the pine and pet its little branches. She felt it was even more wonderful then she expected. Surely this would become a popular houseplant as it was a way to scare off naughty children and pets trying to sneak peeks at the treasures hidden underneath it. All the while giving a gift of its own in the form of delicious fruit that it would produce year around.

After her first success Fable moved on to her next plant, setting the Pine carefully aside.

Hens and Chicks Succulent

Fable pulled the little succulents to her. Hens and Chicks were already a popular house plant as it was very, VERY, hard to kill them. Even its botanical name of Sempervivium meant "forever living".

The little succulent was not poisonous and, while not as popular as the aloe plant, had many of the same health benefits. Traditionally this little plant was planted on thatch roofed houses in Europe to help reduce fire by lightning. Fable wondered if she could do something with that. A quick spreading plant that could grow on almost everything and protect from fire would be advantageous. All the while still being useful as a healer of burns, pests, and skin conditions. Heck it is even useful for throat and stomach problems!

So Fable begin. She first cast the Awakening spell on the little plant. It took it and began to glow. She was pleased.

She then raised her wand to perform the anti-fire charms. As she made the motions to complete the spells her elbow bumped a watering container spilling its contents onto the succulent just as the spells hit the plant. The plant promptly started to shift sunset-like colors and spread! It spilled down her table and across the floor all the while still beautifully changing. Fable tried to stop the plant, grabbing at the little buds. The buds continued to multiply quickly covering her hands and moving up her arms. The seemed to be growing on her! She really began to panic as they reached her face. She cried out "FINITE INCANTATEM!" just as they covered her mouth. The little plants then fell off and to the ground. Breathing heavily and regaining her composure Fable looked down at the little buds. They were still alive but had stopped spreading. The little plants all continued to glow and fade colors. Looking astonished at the plant Fable saw that every drop of the water had been absorbed. She leaned against the table relieved that she was able to slow them down. She gently rubbed her face from the stress and stopped. Her skin was super soft. Any blemishes, any cuts were all gone. She chuckled in shock, the plant had done something that wasn't just destructive, it had healed her.

She grabbed a large cracked, but still usable, clay pot and proceeded to put all the little buds from the floor into it. They made quick work settling themselves in and the pot even seemed sturdier. She levitated the pot to the table to set it aside. She made her notes for the plant she wasn't sure if it had indeed become more fire resistant but it definitely did something!

Fable pushed the big pot aside. She took a moment to comfort the little pine who had been startled by the succulents. She then pulled her last plant to her.

Poinsettia

The Poinsettia was a clear symbol of Christmas, but it did so much more. The Aztecs had used it for skin and clothing dyes and they believed that it was a symbol of purity and wisdom. Its sap created a natural latex that could be used as hair remover or an emetic and a poultice of the leaves could be used for aches and pain and was naturally antibacterial. Surprisingly, a little known fact is that this plant has the potential to grow up to 15 feet tall and again, with some love, can be grown year around.

Fable had a special connection to this plant, having nurtured one at home. She was eager to see what some magic would do.

She raised her wand and again began with the Awakening spell. The plant immediately responded. It began to grow upwards opening new leaves that instantly grew a deep crimson red and began to sparkle. Fable took note of this, happy to see the change. She knew muggles had sprayed poinsettias with glitter in the past to make them seem more magical. She also noticed at the base that smaller plants had begun to form, they also sparkled, yet their colors were not of red, but of snow white, salmon, yellow and even a frosty blue.

Fable then cast a Cheering charm on the plant and waited. It took a moment but she began to see a shimmery dust floating from the plant into the air. She began to feel elated. Hope and joy filled her chest. The poinsettia had developed its own cheer inducing pheromones. Not only that but the plant seemed to be working overtime clearing the air of toxins and pumping out fresh air!

She looked closely at the plant and noticed that all of the varieties offered a sap in its respected colors. Fable added a drop of the sap to a bit of water. The sap dissolved easily making the water a brilliant color. She then dipped some parchment into the water to see how well it took. It turned the parchment a brilliant shade of blue. Fable could see why this plant was prized for making dyes. She then carefully collected samples of each for the teacher.

Lastly Fable experimented with the plants healing properties. She carefully severed some of the leaves and created a poultice out of them. She went looking for a bruise or an ache somewhere on her body having already forgotten that the Hens and Chicks had healed her. After no luck she sighed, took out her wand and shot a weak curse at her arm to create a wound. She then placed the poultice on her arm. The poultice began to work immediately healing the injured area. Fable smiled and finished up her notes then on the plant.

Fable sat pleased with her work. She felt all three of these plants would be useful and a joy to have around. She hoped that Ms. Kavanagh felt the same way.

Charlotte Abernathy - Ravenclaw Charlotte watched, intrigued, while her classmates made their presentations. Herbology was her favorite subject, and it was interesting to listen to the properties of all the different plants. She had a notebook open and was talking diligent notes.

When it was her turn, she smiled and walked to the front of the room with the bundle of plants she had been researching. She was quite nervous, as she wasn't used to giving presentations before. Looking down at her basket of plants, and the faces of her friends in the audience, she felt a little calmer.

The first plant she had chosen was her favorite plant, the sunflower. She held up a bouquet of 5 medium sized sunflowers and held them to her chest, looking at them deeply, smelling their earthy smell. They had been her very favorite flower since she was a kid. Smiling she looked up at her classmates and professor, and began her speech.

"Sunflowers are very powerful in traditional magic. It has many cleansing, and restoring properties. I found several examples of spells that use sunflowers. One spell promotes lucid dreaming. You simply put a seed surrounded by 12 sunflower petals next to your pillow at night. Sunflowers are also commonly used in traditional solstice celebrations, because their magic lies in the sun itself. Nowadays, many wizarding families grow sunflowers on their property to promote luck, and as an ingredient in certain potions. The plant also promotes fertility because it has the tendency to grow many large seeds. Overall, sunflowers have been a favorite of witches and wizards since the time of the Native Americans in North America."

Finally finishing her speech, she glanced at her professor and classmates trying to gauge their expression. She felt herself beginning to turn red, so she quickly dropped the bundle of flowers to her side and shuffled back to her seat quickly.
