This lesson contains an ESSAY QUESTION assignment! ** This lesson was written by of Ravenclaw - she has been awarded 75 House Points!

"Good evening class. My name is Jada Tourmaleen and I've been invited to Hogwarts to introduce you to the art of mineraliumancy. You might not have heard of this particular sort of magic before. It is rather seldom practiced, as it involves the magic contained within certain gems, rocks and minerals.

"As you can imagine, it is difficult to be very mobile when your magic revolves around several hundred rocks. This is why mineraliumancy is more commonly used as a form of divination. A pouch of reusable stones is more portable than the supply needed to craft talisman bags, charms, and magical jewelry pieces.

"That being said, the branch of divination and the branch of charm crafting are extremely different, as divination relies on the colors of the stones and how that relates to the seven realms. Charm creation, on the other hand, seeks to harness the properties of the stones and to combine them in a way to produce a desired effect."

Jada turns slightly and rummages in a large leather bag resting on a lectern behind her. She pulls out a small moleskin pouch bound with some sort of opalescent twine.

"This is a very basic amulet of protection. It contains copper beads for protection, a garnet for protection whilst travelling, a sliver of goldstone, likewise for protection and a jet bead to protect against illness and violence. The twine is woven from selkie hair. That has nothing to do with the protective qualities of the pouch, it is simply how I choose to mark my work. My signature, if you will."

"Moving on," Jada continues, handing the amulet to the student in front of her to be passed around the class for examination, "Amulets and talismans are best created for inanimate objects or for wizards who are unable to use magic for themselves... an infant, for example, would benefit from an amulet bound to his or her crib. Many Quidditch players have talismans and amulets made for their broomsticks. Seekers often use talismans of topaz to help enhance clarity and focus.

"When it comes to wizards who practice magic, jewelry is typically preferable. Many Hufflepuffs wear something with moss agate, which can aid in gardening. Jasper is often worn by the healers at St. Mungo's as it promotes stability, healing and balance. Your assignment is to create some kind of magic charm using the gemstones I have available for you here and the guide provided to the different properties of gemstones."

Click here for the gemstone guide.

Your assignment today, as she said, is to create a magic charm using mineraliumancy. As part of your assignment, please explain what you’re making, what stones you're using, and why. Please keep your answers between 1-3 paragraphs. Please post your answers here behind spoiler tags (if you do not know how to use spoiler tags, please let me know and I'd be happy to help you).

Each student may submit one charm and each charm will be graded out of 15 House Points. Bonus points may be awarded to particularly creative charms.

SPOILER (click to toggle) I made a charm using several stones, the base is Petrified Wood, used for protection and longevity. I would like to live long enough to polish my magical powers to the fullest and be remembered by my accomplishments as a wizard. To help me with those dreams, I chose a powerful stone, the Amethyst which helps to transmute all negative energy into something more positive and repels negative vibrations as well. Amethyst will also gave me peace, stability, common sense, and compassion, among many other things.

I used a large Quartz in the center because it helps drawing out pain, and gives protection. It also increases my magical strength, protects me and aids with healing properties as well. I also chose Citrine to increase magical power, luck, and creativity, but most of all I chose this stone because it provides what most wizards should posses: mental focus, clarity of thought, open mindedness, optimism, and endurance.

Lastly I chose Tanzanite to help me communicate with my spiritual guides that would surely show me the right way along this journey. To hold all stones together and make them into a necklace I used Silver since it relieves stress, brings balance, and clarity of mind. It may not look that pretty but serves its purposes.

SPOILER (click to toggle) Cloaks rustled and desks groaned as the students moved around to leaf through the guide and pick their own stones. Giselle, back her her seat, twirled her hair around her quill for a moment before settling on an idea. Placing some together, she dipped her quill in ink.
Here I have used topaz, jasper, apache tears, sodalite, and lapis lazuli for a charm for mental health. All of the stones have properties for either general or emotional healing, with a focus on stress relief and self-confidence. Muggles have found that cortisol, a stress hormone, is often a precursor or trigger for mental illness, and I've chosen these enchanted gems to alleviate both the stress and the symptoms of low confidence. The stones fill a pendant, with the topaz and jasper forming the central body. I have an apache tear set in the middle and the lapis lazuli and sodalite hanging to form fingers; this shape imitates a muggle hamsa, or five-fingered palm, which has a reputation for protecting the bearer from the evil eye.

Protection and self-improvement, though worthwhile to pursue, have many different approaches already. Often we, as humans, overlook the wounds we can't see. We have Skele-gro for bones, and muggles have their own solutions, but we still lack an equivalent for mental trauma and illness. This is a small contribution to that field.

Giselle. Ravenclaw.

SPOILER (click to toggle) My talisman is an onyx ring with an inset of three stones. The onyx base provides both grounding and balance. Goldstone is in the middle of my talisman to center hope and protection--I'm using blue goldstone as a visual mirror for the night sky full of stars. To the left of the goldstone, lepidolite nurtures peace, tranquility, and self-care. On the goldstone's left is moonstone, for both clarity and protection.

This talisman should be useful particularly in times of both physical and mental strife. Its energy works to calm, protect, and provide support for its wearer.

Magical Charm

My magical charm is a decorative nib attachment for your quill.

Simply choose your favorite feather and nib, and insert them into each end of the attachment. Pick up your quill and feel your muscles relax and anxiety slip away as your mind focuses on the task at hand.

This quality item is made of .925 silver, a metal chosen for its soothing stress relief, while also bringing balance and clarity to the mind.

It is accented with a fluorite cabochon, a stone well known for keeping one's emotions under control, while boosting the mind's mental power, analytical skills, and logical reasoning. Fluorite is also known to bring good luck, and who doesn't need some of that come exam time..? The stone also comes in a rainbow of colors, so it will complement almost any feather its paired with.

I am certain that this magical charm is something everyone could benefit from, and I am pleased to be the one to bring it to life.

Lucky Gauntlet / Confidence Charm There is a serious lack of confidence when it comes to newbies playing Quidditch. Nervousness, anxiety, and fear seem to hold back of a lot of the new players. Their lack of confidence prevents them from being the best player they can be. To help with that, today I made a confidence charm.

I used three stones for this charm. The first of which is Malachite. It will help with overcoming any negativity the player has. Knowing that it has a protection from danger property will also do well to boost confidence. It has other useful properties like concentration, power, and success. These are definitely qualities I want in my teammates. Malachine alone seemed sufficient, but for good measure, I also used Tiger Eye and Carnelian. Both have protective properties, although Tiger Eye is more of a mental protection. This is needed for help with stress. Both also gives the user energy and promote self-confidence. Tiger Eye also adds additonal luck while Carnelian helps a bit more with focus.

All of this work well together to build a confident Quidditch player. I just simply placed the stone inside a Quidditch gauntlet. I'll call it the Lucky Gauntlet or something and give to a newer player.

Protection Charm for Illness and Energies
Jet- Purification, psychic protection, virility, control, luck, health, divination, protection from illness & violence, guarding against nightmares

Amethyst- Transmuting negative to positive, increasing spiritual awareness, calming, soothing, repelling negative vibrations, overcoming addiction, peace, love, happiness, protection, good judgment, dreams, new beginnings, stability, fertility, eloquence, common sense, compassion

Silver- Soothing, cleansing, psychic ability, balance, clarity, stress relief

Moth- *Important symbolism notes, ability to find light in the darkness, confuse enemies, healing, protection from negativity, letting go of negativity and unwelcome influences

What I have chosen to create is a similar yet multi-purpose charm. It is used to protect against illness, negative energies and psychic attacks. Just like germs, negative energy can be picked up and passed around. Having this negative energy can cause you to feel the same way you would when you are sick. The effectiveness of this charm may vary due to your sensitivity to both germs and energies...I happen to be one of those who is sensitive to both, so I could use all the help I can get!

This charm is in pendant form hanging from a silver bail, carved from Jet and Amethyst and in the symbol of the moth. The stones, while have a multitude of beneficial aspects, protect, guard and repel both illness and negative energies. They then began to cleanse and sooth as you are cradled protectively by the moth who carries the power to confuse enemies, heal, and repel the unwelcome negative influences you encounter in every day life.

SPOILER (click to toggle) Firstly Ernessa selects a gold chain to hang her charm from as gold promotes abundance and prosperity, which are definitely good things. Next she needed to choose some gems to use for her charm which meant she needed to decide what she wanted her charm to do. She began to rifle through the different gem stones until she found a bright blue gem -- Lapis Lazuli -- she consulted the guide and saw that Lapis Lazuli was used for courage, tranquillity and self-confidence. This immediately resonated with Ernessa and she knew that it had to be a part of her charm. Ernessa had always struggled with her identity as part vampire and she needed the courage to accept the hard times that this brought her.

Rifling though the gemstones again Ernessa came across a bright green gemstone -- Malachite -- again she felt drawn to it and consulted the guide for it's uses; power, success, releasing anger and pain, overcoming negativity; it's like this gem was made for her! 'The green will match my uniform' she mused. To tie them together she chose some Obsidian, the black of the stone brought out the brightness in the other gems. Obsidian was used to keep you grounded and centred which she thought was important especially with the power and success that comes from the malachite.

Pleased with her charm she put them all together on the gold chain and put it around her neck and went to show Jada Tourmaleen

Totally Legal and Legitimate Tournament Charm I take my game tournaments very seriously, whether it be a magical game like Gobstones or Wizard Chess or Muggle games like poker or blackjack. Having extensively studied the rules, I determined that charms developed to increase luck or mental acuity are permissible but any that involve divination or being able to access extra information or resources are not.

So I made my Lucky Focus charm using large amounts of Fluorite, Amazonite, Rhodonite, and Citrine with small stones of Calcite and Tiger Eye, all encased in a pale white lace bag tied with a sky blue ribbon. Fluorite is the main component of the charm, as it hones the mind of the competitive gamer by aiding concentration, keenness of mind, logic, analytical skill, perspective, and reducing emotional involvement as well as providing good luck. Amazonite, Rhodonite and Citrine complement each other by helping with concentration, courage, self-esteem and increasing your gambling luck, helping you take more risks confidently. Calcite and Tiger Eye round out the mix by adding even more good luck.

All combined, I think this will give me that extra (but within the letter of the law) edge in competition!

SPOILER (click to toggle)

My charm is a small brooch in form of a kingfisher. This bird helps the carrier to listen to his or her intuition. Furthermore, the kingfisher stands for precise timing and quite solitude. It's a careful observer and able to see hidden things.

The body of the bird is made from a round blue Topaz, which stands for emotional balance, energy and focus and most important; tranquility, which supports the symbol of the Kingfisher and emphasizes its positive impact. Its eyes and a little bit of the head-feathers are made of Amethyst to open the eyes of the carrier in both directions. Amethyst adds good judgment and common which is important for a clear view on dreams and new beginnings.

Most of the head-feathers and the wing tips is made of Sodalite. Placing this mineral on the kingfishers head where it symbolizes the carriers head, helps to clear the mind and calms inner conflicts to keep a cool head. Although Sodalite doesn't take up the most space on the brooch, it's the most important one as the magical properties are coincident with the symbolism of the kingfisher. Sodalite helps to see the truth and acts as stress relief. It even supports the carrier in learning and merges logic and spirituality.

Malachite was used for the lower head-feathers and some feathers of the wings. This mineral helps the carrier mostly with materialistic things such as power, success and money, but healing powers and emotional maturity are present as well.

The head of the kingfisher consists of colourless Sapphire, which providess self-discipline. It also helps the aspects friendship and peace. There's also a bit of the Sapphire used on the branch the birds is sitting on, where the mineral supports the carrier to retain balance.

The branch itself and the beak are made of gold which stands for abundance, love and warmth and offers a solid base for life.

Paddy - Gryffindor My magic charm would be a necklace pendant using stones that would help to improve my courage and self-confidence. Although my confidence has improved since being at Hogwarts, there's always that nagging doubt in new situations, which is never helped by me being a werwolf.

So, I have chosen Agate and Carnelian for courage and promoting self-confidence, but I felt it needed balancing out a little (I wouldn't want to become over confident!), so I also added Tiger Eye for emotional balance.

Claming Talisman
Hematite Hematite is known as a “stone for the mind”. It brings mental organization and is very grounding and calming. It decreases negativity and can help balance the body/mind/spirit. Use it to reduce stress and anxiety and to promote awareness of personal issues and patterns.

Lepidolite Lepidolite is a stone of calm, trust, and acceptance. It has a strong relaxing and calming effect. It brings hope and is a stone of transformation in that it helps one get through transitions with trust that everything will ultimately turn out for the best. It enhances self-love, patience, and optimism. Lepidolite is an excellent emotional healer. It greatly decreases stress, anxiety, depression, manic-depression, despondency, anger, panic attacks, addictions and other traumas. Lepidolite is also a protective stone that brings success in business or career. Use it to promote a restful sleep, attract good luck, and reconcile love and heal emotional issues.

Amethyst Amethyst has been a symbol of peace, purity and unification and can aid in bringing serenity and calmness. It is deemed “nature’s tranquilizer” by many healers. Use amethyst to treat insomnia and promote peaceful and healing sleep. It is also commonly used to relieve headaches, nightmares, sugar imbalances and general edginess. This gemstone is one of the most popular metaphysical healing stones and is also often used to overcome fears and addictions.

Gwen thought about what she might want to make for a while, she thought of a bunch of different things she would like a little help in but after all was said and done one things was front and center. Gwen wanted to make something to help relax and calm herself (and other people) for she suffers from high anxiety.

She selected three different stone to add to her necklace amule; Amethyst, Lepidolite, and Hematite, these three were good for calming and centering oneself. She didn’t want anything to flashy so she just made something simple with a tassel that she found on the grounds.

To help even more she added a vial of some Passionflower and Chamomile herbs as well as a two charms. One charm has a moon symbol because the moon’s light always seems to calm Gwen and the other has a maze on it. The maze is to help a person center themselves when they are feeling anxious.

All of these together create a very nice little talisman for her necklace.
Aderyn Jones // Ravenclaw As I aspire to be a healer in the future, the charm I've created aims to enhance many of the qualities a healer needs in order to be successful in their craft. It is a necklace with beads of varying shapes and sizes, and is held together with spider silk thread - it is delicate but strong, as I aspire to be as a healer one day.

First, I've placed an agate bead on the silk in order to help my gardening skills. Healers need to be able to grow all of the medicinal plants they use, and so this bead will help me to be able to do that even more effectively. Next, I've added an amber shard in order to enhance my healing magic, and to help cleanse me of any negative energies I may come into contact with. Blue aragonite and bloostone will help enhance my healing magic even further. I've added an amethyst crystal in order to help me be more compassionate towards my charges. An apache tear and a piece of botswana agate will help me to overcome any feelings of grief I have should I find myself in a situation where I am unable to help or save someone.

I hope this charm will help me along my journey and far into the future as a healer.

Charlotte Abernathy - Ravenclaw

The magic charm I have chosen to make is a bracelet with several different gems attached. The purpose of my amulet is to promote calming, relaxation, and focus. I have a mind that is constantly in overdrive, and this should help to calm my mind, while also strengthening its precision and critical thinking.

I have included several gems different gems, each with traits that cater to the needs mentioned above. The bracelet is a silver cuff with a large chunk of Turquoise on the top, and tiny chunks of other precious gems embedded in the rest of the cuff. The adorning gems are all very small and dainty, making for an understated and elegant piece. Amethyst, Adventurine, Botswana Agate, Fuchsite, Garnet, Howlite, and Sodalite are some of the gems that have been embedded into the cuff.

Using this cuff should hopefully help me be more successful in my everyday life!

Emmy Bowen, Hufflepuff Firstly, I want to make a gem-adorned collar for my cat, Banshee. He often goes into the forest, since he loves to explore, but I worry about him in there. I chose a leather band with bronze decoration, with several moonstones and turquoise stones set into the designs. Moonstone will protect him on his adventures, and Turquoise will help heal him if he gets hurt or into a fight.

I also made a talisman for my little brother. He has horrible night terrors, so I chose to use a small leather pouch to house several different types of gems that he can put under his pillow to help. First, there is a piece of amber and an apache tear, both of which will help ward off negative energies. A piece of aventurine will help sooth his emotions both while sleeping and if he wakes up. Blue lace agate will bring him a sense of peace and warmth, which will help him both fall asleep at the beginning of the night, and stay asleep throughout the night. And finally, a piece of garnet will instill positive emotions and hopefully give him happier dreams, which will lead to a better night's sleep.
