Hi! I'm a lefty too and I think my handwriting is ok, it's not the prettiest nor the worst. I do remember making a huge mess of all my homeworks as a kid because of the HP pencils we had to use in school and my teachers wouldn't let me use a 2H or 3H pencil saying it was gonna be too pale on paper. So until I was in high school were they let us write with pens, I ended all my classes with a blackened left hand side and messy sheets of paper.
I think the only advices and tips I can give are : don't follow the "methods" they try to teach us like putting your writing sheet at a 30 degree angle so your hand won't go over the previous writing... It never worked for me anyway. Take your time and try different ways to form your letters, find what's more comfortable to your hand and progressively take some speed... And search for the right pen or pencil that won't mess up if your hand brushes over it. 2H pencils are harder and less messy, but paler. And I like fine trait roller pens, as larger ones give just a bit too much ink.
I personally do all my handwriting with pens : they hate me less than messy pencils :) I also do try to practice calligraphy, but with a fountain pen instead of the regular thing that takes forever to dry...
I hope it'll help you, even if just a little...
-waves left hand- hello! omg yes! i've always had rough hand writing and gotten picked on for it 9-9 pen or pencil, the side of my hand gets all marked up! i... i don't even remember what i was taught when it came to writing. i just remember always resting my pen/pencil on the side of my ring finger.... it's hard to teach myself how to hold a pencil differently (too hard to draw then and feels as uncomfortable as drawing with the other hand)
I took up mirror writing a few years ago, that ended up even less legible than my forward scripts. Though my signature is better reverse.
I'm a lefty, and I eventually just figured out something that worked for me although my handwriting's normally sort of messy. I still get stuff on my hand when I write in pencil, or pen ink that hasn't dried yet when my hand gets over it, but I learned to write slowly and neatly when I have to write out anything for people at the library.
I'm a lefty, and people always said I had really nice handwriting, which always surprised me. I usually just write small enough, and in cursive, that no one can really see whether it looks sloppy or not, but that's less good advice than I think it is (as my professors will tell you).
I usually press the pencil against my middle finger (you can see the groove) and push it slightly away from and above my hand so that if I'm lucky I won't rub my hand against what I've just written, since I'm pulling my hand downwards as I write, but I usually end up smudging my drawings anyway. A friend I had in school even had a piece of paper that she would put under her hand so that when she wrote it wouldn't smudge too much, but I never thought to try that. This truly is a question for the ages...
