So, this came on my facebook news dashboard. I guess D.C. put in a bid recently to become the 51st state. They're settling on New Columbia as a possible name for now. ( old name from a 1982 voter referendum for a D.C. state name if D.C. ever became a state).
Interesting thought. This is the first I've heard of it. I wonder what the pros and cons of such a move would be? I'll have to google a bit later today.

Honestly, it's been brought up before and hasn't passed.
In any case, right now it's just a bid, and it'll be a while before it goes into consideration at the federal level if it's brought up at some point in the future.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Somehow I don't see it ever happening.

I was hoping Guam or Samoa would've become states too... Well, I hope that happens at some point, too.

Puerto Rico's been trying to become a state for a while now, too. Something about English not being the primary language there is one of the reasons it hasn't become one, I believe.
I remember more about Puerto Rico becoming a state, and less about DC being one, because it seems like they always wanted to be separate since they host the government. A lot would change, I'd imagine with them being a state as well as the country seat.
