So, I've been part of the furry fandom, though very minimally and more personally-tied with few other furs, for the past decade or so. I usually only talk to other furs on Instagram now, as the furry scene has grown pretty rapidly there (probably since it's image-based so art and fursuit photos can run rampant and free!)
I'm not at fursuit-making level of furry yet. Right now it's just minimal art, but a lot of concepts! I'm still soooooo stuck on what I want my final fursona to be. I've created one before, but they turned out to be a lacking OC at best. How dedicated to your fursona are you? What level would you say you are in terms of how much you've embodied them?
I've only told my partner, my best friend, and my two sisters of my fursona, and I think only my sister and my best friend are in like mind with why I've created that part of me, and feel so attached to it. The boyfriend just kind of deals with it (teehee) and understands why I'm so silly and accepts it. I have very few friends online who are furry that I talk to, at all. One friend from Scotland who's grown out of the roleplaying but still has his OCs. I know that I definitely plan on fleshing out a fursona that I will stick with at some point, but sometimes it's kind of intimidating, seeing all of these other furs totally dedicated to their awesome fursonas and I'm still over here, after 10 years...with nothing set in stone. (...ARGH!!..) Does anyone else have this problem? What about the process do you think keeps some from making their characters that they want?
Any tips and advice are so welcome, and feel free to tell me about yourself and your fursona(s)! I -love- learning about others' thoughts, ideas, and opinions on the furry fandom! Tell me all about it!
hi! i'm very new to the furry fandom!! my girlfriend is a long time furry (she went to anthrocon 2009 when she was 13. in a fursuit she'll admit was real bad )) and we had a mutual friend who sold fursuits (she actually moved recently and works at lemonbrat now) and i was around the fandom a lot and i LOVE the craftsmanship and dedication i've seen put into fursuits and designs of fursonas and species !!
i made my first fursona like 6 months ago, but i didnt really identify with it. it was an oozey, doofy looking sloth bear, and he's a cute character of mine now, but definitely not my fursona. my fursona now is a ferret, because ??? it sounds dumb, but i am like a ferret (i'm bitey and long and weird af) they're a hard animal to draw, but i defs want to flesh out they're character and design !! i havent even picked out a name yet ;;;;
getting into the furry fandom actually fixed my year long art block !!
i follow a lot of furrys on IG too ! let me know your insta user and i can follow you there if you want!
here's some art my gf made of her fursona (Nova, a kangaroo) and mine (the light blue and yellow one )

and here's me in my gf's most recent partial suit she made for a fur con last year! link
sorry for blabbering about me, i get excited talking about furry stuff (as inexperienced as i am)) tell me more about your fursona !!

Ah, man, I'm definitely not the best when it comes to being active in the furry scene. But I'm there, ever so faintly.
You say your art's minimal, but do you have any illustrations of your fursona? I've had one in mind for years, but haven't even drawn it out yet. Then again I'm not even involved in any of the big sites for that.
I guess the most important part of connecting to your sona is analyzing yourself. When I was younger I tried to avoid picking the clichéd cat, even though I have such a strong affinity with them. In the end, I wound up forcing myself to stick with a representation that didn't really convey me. Stepping back I decided to observe my interests; what was a reoccurring trend in all the things that I liked from childhood up to now? From there I tried to pick a creature that summed up those things. Now TBH, I'm still divided between two particular sonas (either a siamese cat, or a chimera), but those two represent me so much better than the one(s) before.
Maybe that helps a little?
: that is so awesome!! all of it! It's so cool that you and your girlfriend are both furries, so so cool!!
And aaaah your fursona is a cutie! I'm thinking that I'll be writing down all of my own personal traits and then googling temperaments of animals with similar traits...definitely a good idea.
your GF's fursuit partial looks so dope. I seriously can't wait until I can make my own! eeeeee it'll be so much fun.
I'm still torn between a lioness, a camel, or some sort of smaller rodent like a dwarf hamster or a mouse!
I don't really have my fursona drawn out yet because of a wickedly dense art block I've had over this last month...it's a bummer!! I'll post here when I get something sketched out of course! c:
those ideas you have for yours are already epic! I can't wait to hear what you've decided upon!
Thank you both for sharing with me! I'll share with you guys soon enough once I've updated my fursona! <3
sorry i rambled early, i got excited haha ;;;; reading over all of it was kinda embarassing lmao but yeah my gf is a really talented furry and she's been making fursuits for herself for a long time, so i hope i can learn from her and make some stuff of my own !
those are some super different animals from each other, i love that! you have so many ideas to go from, and even if you dont make one or two of them your fursona, you can always make OCs with those animals. :>
but for sure, feel free to show me when you update your fursona, and share any cool other ideas you have! as a super new furry, i love learning more about other people's design ideas

I have been as long as I can remember. But mostly as an unattainable option as opposed to what there is.
The only alternate I still use is a bio-mechanical being I call Vioran Rahi Zeeroh. But since I can only portray him in Lego, its regarded as below even the simplest sketches.
I'm nothing more than a malcontent.
I would say I have been a furry for about eleven years now. The idea of fursona was around when I was coming out of middle school. I found a book that taught you how to draw them when I was 14 and instantly fell in love. I started role playing around the same time. There is one character in particular that I find myself really attached to and I have been working on her for the same length I have been a fan.
xD
I have toyed with ideas of other OCs, but nothing else has stuck so far. When it came to the fur suit, I am not against the idea, I just don't have the time to dedicate that much to it. Then again, I am not entirely certain I have the skill. It is something I would do a little more research on and look into people who make them as a trade. I have a friend who does just that with her fursona Flash. x3
It is cool that you have friends and fam who are supportive though :3 Most of the time people look at my like I am a freak hahaha
