Loyalty Pet Slot Totem?

Hey all!! It's been a long while since I made a forum post. Figures that it's in the Help & Questions forum....
Ok - so yeears back, I made use of my 1 Week Gold Account Medal. In that week, I acquired my extra 5 pets. I now have the maximum of 10 pets, and I have no extra slots available to adopt more.
I recently discovered this Loyalty Pet Slot Totem I have, which as i've read, can be activated to gain an extra pet slot!!!!!! This is awesome! Through further reading though, my current understanding is that I must reactivate a Gold Account before i'm able to make use of the totem + adopt/create another pet? If I activate the totem before paying for a Gold Account, will I get the pet slot but not be allowed the option to fill it with a pet?
Eeeesh it would just be kinda disappointing(and expensive...) if I need to get GA JUST for the purpose of using the totem...
Users in the SB told me that I don't need to get GA to use the totem...but i'd just like to double-check with forums ppl because wikia says otherwise. :(
(e) Also...dumb question but....where is my avatar's smile and how do I get it back?

Patience. I colored patience gray, hung over with black clouds. I colored hope yellow, just like the sun we could see for a few short morning hours. Too soon the sun rose high in the sky & disappeared from view, leaving us bereft and staring at blue. 🌻
gold accounts are not linked to pet slots in any way any more :)
your smile may be layered underneath your base, or you can go here to fix your base if something else is wrong with it :)
