Anyone here know Chinese and has the time to help me?

I'm working on a story for fun and I'm using the Four Symbols or whatever anyone wants to call them and they each have a name, but I don't know the meanings. Here are the names: The Azure Dragon has the name Meng Zhang (??), the Vermilion Bird was called Ling Guang (??), the White Tiger Jian Bing (??), and the Black Turtle Zhi Ming (??)

Here's where you can find the Chinese characters since they don't show up on the thread, in case: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Symbols_%28China%29

Thanks for any help. I just want to know the names in English so I know what to work with.

Those are just names...? Names don't translate into something different when you switch from Mandarin to English. We just take the pronunciation and spell it out using the Latin alphabet. (Or we randomly pick a "western" name). e.g. your name doesn't change when you go from English to French / German / whatever, so why would it suddenly change if you go to an Asian language?

Similarly, if you go from an English name to a "Chinese" one, we're just picking words that sound similar to the foreign name so it can be written. Portugal translates into "Grape Teeth" but you're not going to see any of us talk about the country named "Grape Teeth." We're going to talk about Portugal.

I was wondering if they had any special meaning like mine (my real name) means beauty. Alice mean noble etc. If a name were to mean flaming angel I'd want to incorporate it into the character. It's mostly because I'm nosy. <<;

Here's a neat trick.

It's subjective though. In Chinese each character can have different interpretations, meanings and literal translations. You can also google search characters individually and according to wiktionary, "meng" could mean "great." Also characters from Chinese-originated names often have a meaning, but when characters are combined to make a name, they don't always carry a more complex meaning. It's usually a combination of family-passed titles/characters and something parents find unique or poetic or whatever.

Good luck with story!

Thanks! That's very helpful.

Thanks. I'm hoping it will at least be an interesting story. Doubt it'll be published, but I'm hoping people will enjoy it when I get the chance to post it online.
