Because of the dual nature of the setting, your character can play with a lot of style, BUT, as always, there will be CHOICES. For example, that fabulous Warrior with "anything that works" style may find the Warangi code of honor a bit confining. Do you keep the respect of the villagers or ignore the means for the expedient end? Decide how you're going to play it. Should be fun to see.
You do not choose between the two levels of these classes. They are both part of your character, which will be regarded as the second mentioned the moment your party sets foot in Sinhae.
For example, your Mage will be viewed as a Jincar, and will gain those abilities, but his or her wand may fizzle and a simple hand be needed. You will all have to adapt to the alterations---when in Rome, and all that jazz.
For the balance of play and fairness to everyone, these are the only classes and combinations in play. Wayward Squirrel does not permit "godplaying." No, just no.
Classes
Warriors/Warangi--for those who want to open locked doors by kicking them in and the like. Lots of physical strength here, and not easily frightened. Magic weapons are allowed, but no outright casting of spells. Besides, nothing tops a big shiny sword. Might is right, tyvm.
The Warang is slightly different, since he or she pledges to protect those who cannot defend themselves. All fights are fair; all punishments just, and any death is carefully considered. The code of honor is strong in this one. The plus side is an increase in blade skill that is awesome to behold.
Magic Users/Jincara--Got a spell for that? These folks do, and they come in all sorts of specialties. In classic mode, they are handy at making things a lot easier and conjuring up needful items. Fire, Ice, or Alohomora? Why, yes, indeed!
A Jincar is much the same, but works through Ki, the inner energy that allows control of the elements and forces of nature. Wands are not needed when a simple movement of the hand will do. There is a price in fatigue, though, as each spell tends to drain the caster for a bit. Use heavy power wisely.
Rangers/Seunshin--Even the trees love this character! Critters will lick their wounds clean and plants will bind them with sap. They're graceful and light footed as well, and know a bunch about nature. They're also hot with arrows.
Just as hot with missles is a Seunshi, and those missles includes stars, small blades, etc. BTW, this is a "grey" ability in Sinhae, as the inhabitants have been denying any type of stealth fighters for centuries, and outsiders often think they don't exist there. But they do, oh, yes, they do.
Bards/Kisaengs--How charming are these characters? Very, and handy at getting folks to cooperate. They can usually sing or play, and they're great storytellers. So they're a little light-fingered and no one's pocket is totally safe, but no one's perfect, right?
A Kisaeng in your party can be beyond price, as these folks are very accomplished in all the arts, including those of seduction. The perfect host or hostess in the gorgeous costume with the full flask of refreshment makes the perfect spy as well. Be sure to watch the fan. It can become a weapon in no time flat.
Alchemists/Danhaks--Need healing? Got a heavy puzzle to solve or a formula to make? Lost in a maze without a map? Here are your folks. No challenge too great. They truly are legends in their own minds, and sometimes everyone else's.
You have a Danhak in your party? No, no, of course you don't! That would give you a person who could conjure an explosive out of a certain small rock and a touch of gunpowder. Too powerful, so they're outlaws in Sinhae. You're the Danhak? Better pretend to be something you're not, and save your companions the trouble of breaking you out of jail--over and over and...
Vagabonds/Illjimaes-sort of a Jack/Jill of all trades. Within the realm of the Squirrel, not much technical expertise comes with this, but it does have quite a MacGyver factor. If you don't know who MacGyver is--well--you're waaaayy young. Call your Mom before you leave. She worries.
Any Illjimae is a legend, a "dark knight" to champion those in need. Up walls, across roofs, whatever it takes to breach the impenetrable, an Illjimae can do it. Good at distraction and disguise as well, but may be a touch too slick for his or her own good.
Remember, you can do this! Tanaka believes in you!
Questions welcome below and don't forget to subscribe to the thread for reference!
Tanaka looks great, as always, and I'm already loving the feel here! wiggles Jean likes her new class. nodding A question. To go by your example, the "best means to an end" warrior now classified as a warangi -- they don't /have/ to follow the warangi code since their personality didn't change, but when they act true to themselves it may invite problems from those who feel the code shouldn't be broken, right?
Remind me to tell you about Samurai Dan and his cutting demonstration. I think you'll get a kick out of it. ^.^

Yes, absolutely. So the choices made will affect how you're seen by the locals.
Sooo, Kenny is an outlaw here? Hoo-boy, this'l be interesting! I can just see him pretending to be a Bard/Kisaeng..., until someone asks him to sing.... :(
Haa~ That's a poorly thought out plan, if he can't, but it'd be /hilarious/.

Kenny has a voice like a saw blade being scraped over gravel.... But he is quite the ladies man.
Awwwwww yeahhhh it's like a mage mixed with a monk kinda! :D Talli is gonna have so much fun! Jincara ftw!
Are there wandering physicians/itinerant healers of any kind in Sinhae? Since Kenny's the Alchemist/Danhak he'll need a cover career..., or he could play at being a raggedy, tag-along bum that the party can't get rid of...
There are healers everywhere. Either way would be good for Kenny, just don't arouse suspicions---although there may be a need.....oh well....
ahhaa, a bum. <3 The tagalong you find annoying but endearing, and just can't get rid of is a fun character to play~
