I think it just means that your hex/skin will show on previews instead of your default base. so my skin right now is the blistered hearts skin, but my previews show me with a regular skin because I don't have that option selected.

IIRC hex is more browser-intense, so it slows down your page loads but you get prettier images from it. This is why there's an optional off button for it.
