That there's a good chance I might be diabetic. I went to the clinic this week for a problem (It was either a bladder infection, or yeast). I had to pee in a sample cup. When I finally got to see the Doctor, he told me that I have sugar in my urine and that's a sign of diabetes. He's sending me for blood work since my family Doctor is away on vacation (again!). I'm fairly obese and diabetes runs on both sides of my family.

I know I need to lose weight. Now I have to change my eating habits which will be so hard.

Who else is young with diabetes? I'm only 29...

That's really rough. I figure I'm safe to assume you're talking about type 2, right? The good news is this isn't a sure-thing yet - you still need to be actually tested for it before they can confirm if you're insulin resistant/diabetic. Did the doc mention if he was sending you for the one or two hour glucose test? You can fail the one hour and still pass the two hour test and be considered good; so don't panic too much if you take, and then fail, the one hour (though some docs will skip the one hour test because it can be a bit of a waste of time like that).

I've been tested for it twice in the last year or so (I'm 28). First time (2h test) was because I was diagnosed with PCOS, as it significantly increases the likelyhood of developing insulin resistance/type 2 diabetes. The second (1h test) was half way through my pregnancy, as it's routine to test for gestational diabetes. I passed both tests, but I know that with mine and my family's medical histories (type 2 is alarmingly common on my mom's side to begin with, ignoring the whole PCOS-factor I have going for me D=), I'm very likely to develop it at some point between now and by the time I turn 40. So, from here on out, I'm going to be getting tested regularly (not looking forward to that, as the glucose drink they give you is pretty nasty, ngl).

Beyond that, I don't have a whole lot of personal experience with actively dealing with diabetes. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you, though! <3

The Doctor is sending me for a 12 hour fast. I freaking hate needles so much. I also have PCOS.

Is he just running a blood test, or did he mention anything about a glucose drink? I know I was asked to fast for 12 hours before I did the 2h test; so if you are doing the full glucose test I imagine it would be for the 2h one (I'm assuming only because we're both from the same province and it's likely the practices would, at the very least, be quite similar =P).

When I did the 2h test they took a blood sample after having fasted for 12hs, then I had to drink the nasty-ass glucose drink and was asked to sit and wait (couldn't eat or drink here, obvs). After two hours, they took another blood sample to compare and see how my body metabolized it. For the 1h test they just had me come in, drink the drink, and only took my blood once, after waiting only one hour. For that one I didn't have to fast, but still wasn't allowed to eat/drink during that hour. It was a significantly easier test, but also waaay less accurate - which is why people who don't actually have diabetes can still "fail" it.

I don't have diabetes but I knew someone who did.

Funnily enough he got diabetes around the time he started dating meXD

Good luck with the tests. I loathe needles and I get about being nervous as being stabbed isn't my idea of fun.

Since you're so young yet, you will probably be able to change your diagnosis with eating healthy and exercise. And when you lose weight and are eating a healthy diet, your diabetes just might go away. The only reason it may stay around is if you have a genetic factor, as in if it's been in your family for a while. Trust me, I know how hard eating right and losing weight is (I'm working on it myself right now too), but it's a whole lot better than having to give yourself insulin shots or taking pills.

In fact, today I am trying a healthy choice meal for the first time for lunch. It's sweet and sour chicken and it has veggies in it, which I really hope, even pray, that I can get myself to eat without gagging. I keep looking at the clock, nervous about lunch. It's pathetic really, but it is what it is.

I wish you the best of luck. If I can do it, anyone can lol.

Well, I have a Doctors appointment in 4 weeks (May 16 to be exact). I need to talk to him about a lot of things. I have so many things wrong with my feet right now, it's unbelievable (and the fact that I just discovered three cysts in my feet is a real piss off).

I will be asking my Doctor for more diabetic tests.

snuggles and hugs I'm so sorry you're going through all this. You seem like such an honestly nice person. Why do crappy things have to happen to nice people? Crappy things should happen to crappy people.

Based on my grandmother's experience as I was told, at this point you'd be pre-diabetic and can avoid the actual diagnosis by losing some weight and/or improving your diet as instructed by your doctor.

This was the instruction my grandmother was given but she did not heed and spent the rest of her life with type 2 diabetes. I'm not sure exactly of her age when she was diagnosed but I'm pretty sure it was before her last two children, my mom and my youngest of 5 uncles were born. my youngest uncle ended up with type 1 at the age of 9. One of my other uncles was in his 40's I believe also diagnosed with type 2 but I don't know the details there. I hardly ever see him.

My family Doctor doesn't want to put me on medicine to help regulate my blood sugars. He said he wants to control it with diet and exercise =/

The fact that you have PCOS as well as concerns for Type 2 means he should at least be considering putting you on Metformin. People with PCOS who aren't even insulin resistant often find that Metformin can help alleviate some of their symptoms - including, surprise surprise, helping with weight loss. Honestly, I'd get a second opinion.

Edit: Of course a doctor would know more about your condition than I, a non-medically trained internet nobody, but it is concerning that he isn't willing to consider at least trying medications that may or may not help. I've found that a lot of doctors don't actually know much about PCOS (or its ties to diabetes), so a second opinion may help get you the proper treatment you need.

That was what I was referring to, changing your diet and losing a certain amount of weight. This could prevent you from actually being diagnosed with diabetes. As far as I am aware anyway.

Try and remain as calm as you can until you get results. As everyone has said above, at least youth is on your side so you have a chance to defeat it IF that is the case.

But don't count your chickens yet. When I was sick last year I kept receiving "dire" outlooks from doctors but none of them ended up being the end result. I was worked up for nothing in the end.

I hope the tests go well. Blood tests are never fun :( keep us updated
