The U.S. government just announced that Harriet Tubman will be the face of the $20 bill! The famous abolitionist, who helped rescue thousand of slaves, is the first female and first non-white American. She will be replacing the slave-owning Andrew Jackson. Awesome!

From what I have heard about the new $20 dollar is that Harriet Tubman will be on one side and Andrew Jackson on the other.
. . .
I'm really glad she's being represented on the $20 bill. But, I can't help feeling like it's a bit of an insult to Harriet Tubman to still keep Jackson on the back. It's like someone at the US Treasury was like, "hey, I know! Let's put Harriet Tubman on the front of the $20, but keep that human trafficking POS Jackson on the back. Isn't that a great way to honor her memory?" Just give her the whole bill, damn.
Also, I find some of the comments I've seen on other sites to be absolutely hilarious. "B-but Jackson was a good guy, he broke up the banks!" Okay, so I guess him breaking up the banks completely negates all of the other things he did. Like you know, displacing and killing thousands of Native Americans by signing the Indian Removal Act of 1830, or making his fortune off of slavery. Oh, and just generally being a miserable violent bastard. But no, spot on. Breaking up the banks makes all of that total okay.
Or this gem. "Well, Harriet Tubman is cool and all. But, I think we could have picked someone more deserving." Lol, really?! To criticize a woman who risked her life to help hundreds of slaves escape bondage, acted as a spy for the Union Army, and was a strong supporter of the women's suffrage movement as not "doing enough," oh the arrogance of some.
I agree w/ Cinnabunny about how much bs there is about the whole thing there is on other sites. I particularly get amused by people talking about how Jackson was good b/c he broke up the banks and paid down the debt- Jackson's financial policies (including getting rid of the federal bank) directly led to the panic of 1837- the worst financial crisis our country experienced until the Great Depression. Hardly something to recommend him! On the flip side, I've also heard some people saying that putting Harriet Tubman on our currency is to spit on her legacy, considering she spent much of her life dedicated to tearing down the system on which the US dollar was built and which still gives it its power, albeit in an altered fashion. Personally, I think it's nice that they're putting a woman of color on the $20 (it'd be better without Jackson, of course!), but I feel like it's just going to cover up the reality of racism and sexism in our society. There are already enough people who deny that we have problems with inequality, this will just give them something else to point at and say, "See? Racism's over! There's even a black woman on the $20!" Imo, things like this should be used to celebrate actual achievement (or society, obviously) and although we've certainly come a long way since Tubman's day, we still have really far to go.
Old news but I'm still disgusted Andrew Jackson is defiling the 20 that should just have her on it. I think making her likeness share the 20 with a slave owner is a bigger insult to her legacy than her being put on money at all, but he is not the only slave owner on our currency! They should all be removed.
