BEAR WITH ME, OKAY, this is going to be a long post.
So, I've had this idea for a while, that might be a cool feature to add somewhere down the line, after all of the priority things are dealt with and whatnot.
Wouldn't it be cool to add a "Residential Area" to each region on the map? This would be cool for letting users pick where they would like to live. Of course the price for a home, or even a plot of land, will vary by area. The price can either be based on supply and demand/popularity, or be based on the lore's rendition of that region's economy, or some combination of both, perhaps. Considering the lore could potentially be used to limit the amount of available space in each region as well. (For example, I imagine there would be less space available in Centropolis or on Atebus, than say out in Riverside or Veta. Of course we could scrap that idea but I thought it would be an interesting thing to consider either way.)
So you pick your region to live, and as we are starting out the housing system, let's say everyone gets a plot of land to build on rather than an already built home ("already built" can be an option later on when users are trying to sell their property). Additionally, the region will determine the overall appearance of your property. For example, a "plot" in Centropolis might actually be a segment of a floor in an apartment building, and your only exterior option is to add balconies or something. Atebus would give you your own bubble plot to live in. Everywhere else would give you an actual plot of land. The only place I think should NOT be available to live in is the Underground, partially because the unliving already kind of like to keep to themselves, and also because it would be a sub-region to Shadowglen. Let's try to avoid adding sub-regions.
Now, I understand that allowing us to build a home completely from scratch might be completely insane and extensive in terms of time, effort, and programming, so I wouldn't complain in the slightest if we were given like two or three options for a basic, predetermined floor plan/house to build. Just let us choose basic things like the appearance of the walls (paint, or wallpaper, what color/pattern, etc) and the floor (wood, tile, carpet, whatever) and perhaps let us select a color scheme for the exterior. Keepin' it simple for the sake of the programmers' sanities. In addition to building your home (which starts off as enough room for your 10 basic pet slots and yourself), perhaps there can be expansion options depending on how many pets you have, while also considering the size of your plot of land. (Like if your land is becoming rather tight, you would have to expand the actual plot of land in order to have more space to build on to accommodate the rest of your pets.) Other things we could build would include adding things to our yards, like maybe stables for our legeica and neela, or pools for our tutani and chelon, you get the idea. Things we would need to be able to tend to our pets. We could have other options just for funsies too, like playground equipment or something.
I was just thinking, isn't it weird that all of the NPCs have a place to live, but we don't, even though we are supposedly also residents of the same world? That is what caused me to think of this idea. I know we're no where NEAR ready to implement this sort of thing, and I know there are other issues/plans that are already on the priority list, so this is just something I think might be fun to consider for later down the road. :) It would be just a money-sink, but hey, maybe if we make it possible for other users to enter our homes, we could have the potential for some really cool holiday features down the line as well!
Feel free to add your own ideas to this, but please consider the sanity of our programmers while you're at it. I think I'm already pushing it with the current proposal. xD Thank you for taking the time to read my lengthy post~
Pretty sure something like this is listed in the frequently suggested and denied thread.
It could be fun, but it does seem like a large task.
This is def on the 'frequently rejected ideas' list. I just really don't see the need for houses. The idea doesn't appeal to me at all.
Just reading this Suggestion is exhausting. No thank you.
Ngl, I loved the house feature when I was on Neo 538795273 years ago...but I don't really feel like it's suited for Subeta?? Plus that would be A LOT of work that could be used for something else.
id rather just pick up my copy of happy home designer or sims for this honestly.

I agree with others that this would be too much work.
However, I wouldn't object to something small about acknowledging where you "live" But I don't see much use for it either.
I can't support another suggestion that would make Subeta feels less like a pet site to me.
It'd be cool but i personally wouldn't use it. Maybe if like 10 years later and subeta is there and thriving with an amazing team of >5 programmers and there are magically like almost no bugs then maybe it will happen, but for now it seems the site is still struggling to actually function so i doubt it
only if my house can be the trash can on atebus
The main problem with this is that it's a lot of high risk with incredibly little reward. The amount of time, money, and effort going into this just wouldn't be worth it in the end, especially since it would be such a small part of the site. I have no doubt that there would be the select few that are willing to spend money and all their time making their place look good, but we already have human avatars on site that have more customization options than I've seen on any other site and I don't imagine anything would be able to surpass the amount of earnings that avatars bring in.
That being said, I could maybe get behind more location based options. I was going to bring up Flight Rising and Neopet's Yooyu ball thing, I forgot what it's called. But they allow you to choose a location or land that kind of helps you immerse yourself a little more. It could be through competition, which Subeta is fond of, but even if it's something like how we have a choice of what Christmas tree we want I wouldn't mind. And honestly, a feature like this would most likely only affect the user who is making their house unless like a house spotlight came up, but because of how personal it is I'd also love to see new themes created for each location.
So I'm sorry, but I just can't get behind house customizing in itself.

No.
Given this gets suggested like every few months, no.

I guess I could be behind setting where you live, just for some flavor, but you could just list this on your profile yourself too. It might be sorta neat for new players, to add to the immersion, if after they create their first pet they are given a description of each of the lands and asked where they would like to live (which could be changed later with SP/CSC). Give more incentive for new players to look into the lore. Make users feel like we are actually part of subeta, rather than superimposed upon it. In a similar vein, I would love to see how so many humans ended up on subeta anyway, since the native npcs look different from the standard HAs.
But as to adding houses, customization, color schemes - definitely NOT. Too much work, I can hear the bugs buzzing from here just at the idea, and I thought this feature was cute but useless when neo did it.
I like to think that our profiles are our homes at Subeta.
So nope.
WOW, I just re-read my own post and thought "That's kind of excessive isn't it" before I realized IT WAS MY OWN POST. I must have been sleep deprived as heck when I posted this, I am so sorry.
While I still do like the idea of a housing system (mostly because I want something to do with all of the useless chairs and "home appliance" crap we have lying around), I can def opt for something much simpler. Like let us pick a place to live, get to chose between two or three templates, maybe pick a color swatch based on potion colors, and then Neko Atsume that crap up with some pre-determined item placements, and leave it at that. That would be fun and simple and it would be fun to see how other people's places look when we trick-or-treat at their home for morostide or something.
