This lesson includes an ESSAY QUESTION assignment. ** This lesson was written by of Slytherin - she has been awarded 75 House Points!
In this class you will be learning about ghouls, ghosts, and poltergeists. All magical entities fall under one of the three categories of Beast, Being, or Spirit. Ghouls are classified as beasts while ghosts and poltergeists are classified as spirits. Today's lesson is about ghosts.
For many of you, your first notable encounter with ghosts would have been as soon as you entered Hogwarts. It's plain to see that they're weightless greyish-silver apparitions that can fly through solid matter without change to either themselves or the object. However their presence does interfere with water, fire, and air. Ghosts cause sudden and dramatic drops in temperature to their surrounding environments.
A ghost is formally defined as the disembodied spirit of a once-living witch or wizard. The latter part of this definition is very important. Despite their prevalence in Muggle stories, only magical beings can become ghosts. All ghosts are either afraid of death or have an extremely intense connection to the locations they haunt.
There are many ghosts here at Hogwarts because it is such a powerful magical stronghold. Each House has a patron ghost. Gryffindor's is Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington. The Fat Friar is Hufflepuff's ghost. The ghost of Slytherin House is the Bloody Baron. Ravenclaw House's ghost, the Grey Lady, is the daughter of its founder.
Your assignment today is to interview your House's ghost. Please prepare and present a written transcript of at least four questions and ask no more than six. The ghosts have been kind and cooperative in agreeing to participate so I ask that you conduct yourselves with the utmost respect. I will be checking with the ghosts to ensure that the interviews have taken place. Please post your interview here behind spoiler tags (if you do not know how to use spoiler tags, please let me know and I'd be happy to help you). You may include an HA of your House's ghost in life or death if you'd like to.
Each interview will be graded out of 15 House Points. If you decide to include an avatar (completely optional), you will receive an extra 10 House Points.
(( I take it we're supposed to project the ghost's answers? >.< Man, that's my weakness -- playing a canon character. I'm tempted just to make a HA and call it a day.))

Lapis Lazuli's interview with The Grey Lady, Ravenclaw
Q1: What is your favorite place in Hogwarts?
A1: If I had to choose one place, I suppose it would be the library. I cannot imagine a life, or afterlife, without access to an abundance of knowledge.
Q2: How do you feel about having to coexist in Hogwarts with the ghost of your murderer? A2: My, you are quite blunt, aren't you? I suppose you think I might be bitter or angry at the Baron...or that I don't feel he has the right to dwell beneath the same roof as the woman he killed. Can you honestly say that my betrayal of my mother is less severe than the crime the Baron committed? I was...am perhaps still, a passionless creature when it comes to the emotions and feelings of others, especially those who cared for me the most. Spending the rest of my existence alongside the man who took my life is ironic...and fitting.
Q3: What is your greatest regret? A3: Oh, my well, I think you already know the answer to that, don't you? My whole mortal life was spent pursing greatness and knowledge. I dismissed matters of the heart because I assumed that no one could match my wit and intelligence. And yet, I still felt the need to take my mother's diadem in an attempt to elevate myself. When what my mother truly had that made her great, was the capacity to love learning as well as love the people around her. But I think that is something you understand very well, don't you?
Q4: Well...um, I suppose so...yes, but I mean, this assignment is about you. Although you've given me a lot to think about. Anyway, if you could be the ghost of any other house, which one would you choose? A4: Oh, most definitely Gryffindor! They have a tower that I favor for my reading and their Transfiguration professor is wonderful! They produce many skilled wizards that I feel I learn a lot from.

Ghosts take offense if the questions asked are too personal too soon. They like to be asked simple questions that they can readily answer until they are at ease the the person asking the questions. In fact even asking them their name can upset them. So I will ask some easier questions to begin and a few harder ones once he knows me better.
So my questions are as follows.
Q1. What is your favorite color?
A. Really I have not got a favorite color any more. The pleasures of different colors became lost to me when I became the way I am.
Q2. Are you sad or angry?
A. I have got good reason to be both. DON"T YOU THINK!!!
Q3. Are you alone? If you are not, how many of you are here?
A. Of course I am not alone, you nincompoop, there are many of us here, too many in fact.
Q4. Why are you here?
A. What a ridiculous question. Do you think I am here on my own free will?
As you can see my questioning did not go down too well with Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington and I have unfortunately upset him. So I will leave my last 2 questions unasked.
Q5. Can you tell me what happened to you?
Q6. Is there any way that I can help you?

Megan Belcrox of Hufflepufff House, interviewing the Fat Friar

Megan: What was it like going to Hogwarts back in the late 900's? Friar: Oh it was much different, much different. More strict, less frivolity. Why, the idea of courting was considered such a scandalous idea and seeing the freedom you youngsters have these days, I must confess, it does my heart good to see how Hogwarts has changed.
Megan: Is there anything about Hogwarts that's changed so drastically that you wish it could go back? Friar: Nothing, whatsoever. Change is inevitable and to go backwards instead of forwards is no way to live. Hogwarts has had many wonderful times and its had many terrible times but no matter what the times were, its progressed in ways that I don't think the dear founders could've imagined it would! I think Helga Hufflepuff would be most proud of how far our Hogwarts has come.
Megan: What was it that made you decide to come back to Hogwarts when you, er...? Friar: Died, m'dear? Don't hold back on me now! I quite enjoy your straight-to-the-point personality. But to answer your question, I came back because it was home more than anything I'd ever known and even if I didn't stay in my life, staying in my "afterlife" is just as wonderful.
Megan: I've been told that ghosts dislike having questions that are too personal asked or mentions of their death. Why do you think that is? Friar: Oh there's all manner of reasons. Some, like myself, couldn't care less. I died, everyone dies. I can freely admit that I was far too cowardly, too scared to choose to Go On, despite my chosen path while I lived. Others I think are more sensitive because they feel it makes them seem less than they are. To be seen as cowardly, but not accepting cowardice, well, it can cause quite a pretentious and disdainful outlook. In all my time there's one thing I've found to be true: admitting your wrongs to yourself is the hardest thing to do. So when you have people asking such a personal question that points to the cowardice you're in denial about, well, it ruffles the feathers, so they say.
Megan: That is truly fascinating to hear your outlook on death and "After". Thank you for sharing your words and wisdom with me, Friar. Friar: Oh my dear, you're most welcome. You know anytime you wish to talk I am happy to oblige!
I hope you enjoyed it. ^_^

Question 1. Did it surprise you that you had to "haunt" Hogwarts after your death ??
Answer: No Hogwarts had been my home a long time ago and I knew that I had a strong connection to this castle.
Question 2. How did you feel after killing the Grey Lady ??
Answer: At first I felt satisfied but then I started to feel guilty and regret my actions.
Question 3. What was your reaction when you saw the Grey Lady at Hogwarts as a ghost ??
Answer: I felt ashamed at first but then I realized I could not turn back time so I had to live my "undead" life with that fact. I got what I deserved.
My last question. What do you miss most about your human life ??
Answer: To be honest the food. I miss the taste and richful flavour of wine on my tongue and then excellent taste of cheese and other food.
Thank you for your time.

Interview with the Grey Lady

My dear Grey Lady, you are as beautiful and wise in death as you were in life. May I ask, what do you do to pass the time between visits with us Ravenclaws and the other house ghosts?
Well, even in death, if you don't use your mind, you lose it, so I spend quite a bit of time in the library. It's tricky business picking up books without a true form, but the librarian is always kind enough to help me take one down off the shelves if need be. After that, turning pages is workable.
That's wonderful! Do you have any preferred subjects on which to read?
I'm well versed in just about any area of magic, but I particularly enjoy reading accounts of more modern wizarding history - events that have happened since my death. I do hear things of the world through the grapevine, but I find reading about such experiences is much more fulfilling.
Does that mean you enjoyed History of Magic best as a student yourself?
Oh heavens, no! It bored me nearly to tears at that age. My favorite subject was charms. I adored it!
Has the subject changed much since you studied it?
It has come a long, long way in the years since I was a student. With new inventions being created all the time, magic must evolve alongside those inventions, and so there are many new things that witches and wizards are charming all the time to help their craft!
That's great! Well, thank you for your time, Grey Lady! I do hope we can chat again soon!
Aderyn Jones // Ravenclaw
Bloody Baron

Um, hello Baron, I'm Merlin from Slytherin and I'm here to..
Baron: Yeah yea proceed with the interview, I know all about the bloody assignment.
Yes, right...then I will begin with my first question: How was it like to study under Salazar himself?
B: What kind of question is that? What do you think? Wonderful! It's such an honor and privilege to be taught by the founder himself.
Of course, my second question is as follow: How different was Hogwarts then compared to now?
B: There is no comparison! Back in the old days education was more strict, more rigid! Now all you do is parade in your pretty uniforms and do baby magic tricks all day!
That's kind of rude, here in Hogwarts they have excellent educators.
B: Oh you poor lad, I'm sure you don't even know a single unforgivable curse by now.
Ehrm, it's forbidden, but off the record I do know a few, just don't tell on me.
B: Very well, next question!
Yes, yes: Are you proud of any magical discoveries you did in your times of human life?
B: Of course, I discover how to...no that was not me...oh yes how to, no, not that...next question!
Ooooo...k. I'll take that as a no.
B: Next question!!!
You are in such a hurry, ehrm, Why do you like groaning and clanging so much?
B: Why? What else can an ancient ghost like me do for fun but to make a fuss?!
I understand, and last question: Would you have changed anything you did in your lifetime? (There was a pause, suddenly he begins groaning and clanging all over the place) Um, Baron? Would you have changed anything you did in your lifetime?
B:WHY ARE YOU ASKING THIS QUESTION??? OF COURSE THERE IS! I carry these heavy chains to pay eternally for my sin of killing my beloved Helena. There is no penalty that will ever make me pay for it.
I'm sorry to have cause you...pain, I will leave you in peace to your groaning and mourning.
B: Yes go now....goodbye Merlin.
Goodbye!

Bloody Baron Interview
(OOC: I opted to show him dead, with and without background)

Questioner: Before we begin I want to thank you for your time and I am sorry if any of these are repeat questions.
BB: Not at all my dear, I'm happy to share. *It could be noted though he seemed tired of answering so many questions.
1. Q. What was it like, for you, to be the first generation to come to Hogwarts?
A. small smile crosses his lips I remember feeling much pride, the concept of course was new, heck even boarding was new. I had previously been taught by tutors my parents had employed.
*Follow up Question: Were you nervous? I mean...was this your first boarding experience?
A. chuckle Of course I didn't show it, but yes...I was nervous. At 11 back in those days, you were expected to act like a proper gentleman and show no fear.
2. Q. Since you were in House Slytherin during the period of Salazar Slytherin being Head of the house, would you have considered him as "dark" as people perceived or credit him to have been?
A. sighs Now that is a loaded question. Everyone is going to perceive him differently and with others throwing their opinions in with that...his image becomes more...skewed. What I can say is he was a brilliant man and a wonderful teacher. I am proud to have mentored under him.
3. Q. I don't want to get to much into it, because I know you dont like to talk about it, but Do you like being called the Bloody Baron?
A. momentary flash of anger in his eyes Yes and no. Yes because it awards me the respect and "presence" I desire...
Follow up Question: Meaning people give you a wide birth?
A. smiles yes and I'm not pestered constantly. And No...because it reminds me of a dark time in my life.
4. Q. I guess this question seems pointless now but, Do you ever wish you could change clothes?
A. laughs My dear I do change clothes!
Questioner: But the blood...
BB: Sometimes things we do in the living world aren't so easily washed off. momentary sadness in his eyes
Seeing that I had unintentionally brought up bad memories I thanked the Baron for his time. All in all even though his appearance is grim, I had determined he was and still is a perfect gentleman.

Amelia Tudor's interview with the Fat Friar
AT: Good Afternoon Friar. First I would like to thank you for the chance to interview you. You are very kind
FF: My pleasure my dear. I have seen you working hard and I know you will do well and make the House of Hufflepuff proud. Now what can I answer for you?
AT: How has Hogwarts changed since you were a student here?
FF: There are far more subjects to choose to study. I would have loved to have the opportunity to study Magical Creatures and Muggles
AT: What was your favorite subject?
FF: I would have to say Charms
AT: Knowing what you know now, would you have choose a different career path aside from the clergy and healing?
FF: Not at all. I took both the clergy and healing very seriously. I found the clergy gave me peace and I also found peace in helping others in their time of need
AT: What is your favorite piece of advice to give to confused students?
FF: Listen to heart. While many others can give you advice about your future, only you can make yourself happy.
AT: Well, I don't want to take up much more of your time. I thank you very much for your help.
FF: My pleasure my dear. You know where to find me if you want a chat. Good luck with your studies
