To answer your question, Vintage, the mechs are strictly animals, save the one human mech.
The mechs
These are the mechs they can pilot. Give me the armament and their weakness. Their weakness could be something related to the animal they are based on.
The Bird: Pilot- Jesse Campbell. An aerial combat unit, has a condensed 30mm cannon in its beak, along with a thermite/magnesium paste nozzle it can use in conjunction with its claws and beak, to break open armor and spew the metal melting goo into the holes. Can also be armed with traditional bombs and missiles. Since it is built like a bird so it may fly by flapping its wings, it is light. But fragile like its animal counterpart, easily damaged and destroyed.

No, they don't have to be military. But it would be interesting if they were, due to the rank the mech pilots will be somewhat officially given, but not actually be, if that makes sense.
