So, I was recently approached by a stranger on Facebook. I kind of want to talk to the person, though are there any consequences? If I don't accept them as a friend or give away any personal information, are there still ways I could be hacked or something?

Trust your gut instinct. If you feel like it's okay, accept them but just be careful. If you don't, block them and more on. But in my personal experience, a lot of these accounts are scams. They will message you telling you that you won something. Don't fall for it.

And if you are really worried, change you password and clear out your history

Examine all account content/activity that has been made viewable to non-friends; timeline posts, likes, photos etc as this will reveal the nature of the individual. An empty or nonviewable account can be red flags that it's a fake/scam account.

If possible you might consider checking out the name and any city, school, or workplace that is specified to verify that the individual is real.

If you decide that you are not comfortable friending/interacting with this individual then ignore the friend request and/or block them. I've ignored dozens of friend requests from unfamiliar individuals (and even one or two familiar ones) without consequences.

You don't need to talk to the person. You're not being impolite if you don't.

If you do decide to talk to them, be VERY wary of links they send you. I follow that advice even with friends (I'm a little paranoid plus sometimes accounts have viruses where they send you a link and then it makes your account do the same thing).
