I have this bad habit of throwing things everywhere. When I come in from work, I strip and throw all my clothes on the back of the couch, but it doesn't stop here... I let it accumulate until I can't stand it anymore. It's the same thing after I do laundry. I throw all my clean clothes on the carpet and don't fold it for days... even a week. I'm pretty lazy. I even have things laying around on the floor.
Any suggestions to stop bad habits?
Start by cleaning your home from top to bottom. Put music on and start in one room and just get it done. Then, to keep it clean assign one or two chores per day... something like:
Mondays: Sweep & dust
Tuesdays: Vacuum
Wednesdays: Clean Bathroom
and so on and so forth... each of those chores will just take you a few minutes to finish if you keep up with them every week.
These are all really simple steps, but if you keep up with them you'll find that your house is never dirty!! But! We all slack off and we all get lazy, but when you do don't let yourself get overwhelmed, just start over from square one! :)
Let me know if you figure it out because I need to know too ;(
That's really good advice. I usually clean my bird and hamster cages on Wednesdays (depending if I work or not) and then I vacuum right after... sometimes. I live by myself, so how dirty can the carpets actually get? I do clean my bathroom once a week... I'll just pick a random day to do it.
Also, my kitchen... sometimes it will stay dirty for weeks before I decide to clean it 8/
Would laundry hampers for clean and dirty clothes help with the messy floors?

No. They would just take up space that I don't have. Although... if I did have a hamper for clean clothes... I don't know if I would use it or not.
I did check out Marie Kondo and the video showed some examples of clients. Those clients are pretty bad. I'm no where near that extreme. Maybe her book would help, or maybe it won't because I'd be too lazy to read it, just like all my fiction books that are collecting dust.
You've gotten some good advice already, so I won't repeat any of it here. =P But I will add that what helped me the most was realizing just how little time it actually took to do something right that minute, instead of telling myself "eh, I'll get it later", then waiting until I get pissed at how messy the place got while I wasn't paying attention and having to spend several hours cleaning everything all at once after finally mustering up the motivation to actually get it all done.
So make putting the clean clothes away a part of your laundry routine. When you change after getting home, set aside anything you might re-wear (NOT on the couch =P), and put clothes you won't right into the hamper. If you use a dish, wash it after you're done eating (or load it directly in the dishwasher, if you have one). It's VERY easy to let yourself slide back into old habits, so you'll need to make sure you stay top of it - but doing small things more often feels like nothing in comparison to the several hours you'll be forced to spend cleaning everything all at once after you've let it slide for too long.
Another tip? The less stuff you have, the less you have to clean. My husband and I noticed that when we had several full sets of dishes and cutlery, we'd just use every piece until nothing was left clean, and have to wash everything all at once (and we don't have a dishwasher D=). We got ourselves down to one set of everything (four plates, four bowls, four spoons, etc) and boxed the rest up; so now even if we DO get lazy and wait until everything is dirty before washing, it's nowhere near as overwhelming a task. The same principle can be applied to your wardrobe. If you have a lot of clothing and are constantly putting off doing the laundry until you have nothing clean left to wear and have several loads of wash piled up, bag up anything you don't actually need and either donate it or store it away. I promise, this makes a huge difference.
After watching some clips of Marie Kondo, I was inspired to clean my standing wardrobe in my room (it has all my bed sheets, towels, dish towels, some clothes, ect), I got rid of a garbage bag, a kitchen garbage bag and a grocery bag full of clothes that are too small, or that I didn't like anymore. I'm going to donate them the next time I'm in town.
i'd rather buy a second home once i'm drowning in all my clutter than learn & put effort into not being a slob.
Habitica!!!! It's a productivity app/site that basically makes your life into an RPG. You can lists habits, daily tasks, and to-do items. Every time you complete something and check it off, you get gold, xp, and a chance at getting a random item. It's super cute and doesn't really hurt to try. My advice is to be as specific as possible with your tasks, and to start small. It also has a collection aspect to it - you can aim to own all the armor, pets, mounts, equipment, achievements, etc. You can also join groups and accept challenges! It's very cool and I highly recommend it.
What I do is right now I am trying to clean a little every day. If you clean up the mess you make when you make it, it is easier to deal with. Don't get me wrong about two weeks ago my house was a pig sty. Its hard to do it all the time and I know I throw my clothes around too. You just have to keep with it, like someone above when I get into deep cleaning mode I usually turn on music real loud and it helps. I hate folding clothes after I do them so they may stay in the basket for a few days but gotta put them up or I can't put dirties in there. Not sure if any of that helps but hope so!
That's what I basically did this week. I did something every day so that I didn't feel overwhelmed by doing it all at once. I still need to dust the other half of my apartment, but I'm a procrastinator and it probably won't get done, unless I do it tonight before bed.
