I don't know if I put this in the right forum.. it's been awhile but I've always liked the replies and help I've gotten on Subeta. OKAY, SO. I'm going to try to make this as short as possible.
My mother has taken her two granddaughters, my nieces, because my sister got caught stealing money from someones credit card and then got caught doing meth. Sister lost her kids a year ago (January 2015). My mom's had them for exactly 7 months now; enough to file. After 90 days of not seeing her children, my sister has now 'abandoned' all rights to them. The court even called my mom and asked her if she wanted full custody. Well, yesterday my moms taxes were rejected because it said the girls SSNs were used. We found out it was my sister who claimed them. She's repeatedly tried lying about it but she accidentally let it slip to our other sister IN A TEXT that she claimed them. (she's not very bright)
Now the question is. How do we go about getting her audited? As of now, we're in a terrible snow storm and all numbers are just ringing and we haven't been able to get a hold of anyone. My mom read she had to file a tax form on paper and mail it? But is there something else we can do? My sister deserves punishment and I'm not letting her get a slap on the wrist for this. She has 0 rights to her kids.
I mean, you could try calling the IRS. All of their business is usually mail-in though. Even when I was on a payment plan for my taxes, all questions and changes were handled via snail mail. The chances of her being audited without doing anything are super low, especially if it doesn't make a drastic difference in her taxes. Have your mom weigh the pros and cons of sending it in and whether it's worth her time. Responses may take weeks and they may not even do anything. :/ Here's a helpful link

Call a tax office or a financial lawyer, they should be able to help too. What she did was very illegal, you can only claim children if they've been living with you for 6 months and if they've been with your mother for 7, then there is no way she could of had them for 6 months.
