The Pet Spotlight is one of my favourite things on subeta, I love looking through the winners' profiles, reading the stories etc. It's really awesome thing. But! Since the limitation to 3 winners per week it became more and more annoying for those who participate ... or should I say TRY to participate? After Mikey. got kicked out of the queue after ~4 months waiting (no idea why, I still couldn't find the reason, but oh well, not complaining, at least on eof the staff members has done ANY action) there are still 3 more pets of mine sitting in the queue since months.
Marius J. : nominated mid of April 2015
Khorek : nominated mid of March 2015 kicked out 21.07.2015 re-nominated 28.07.2015
Commander K. : nominated mid of December 2014!!!
There is STILL NO feedback about the reason why a pet is kicked out (it was promised long time ago) and the change has brought NO improvement to the particimants either. For me as user, coder, particimant, whatsoever, it just had led to frustration. Are seriously talking about months from finishing a profile to getting a vote (kicked out or getting in the winning queue) and even YEARS to winning? Like: my pet profile has been nominated today, maybe summer 2017 I may have a chance for winning? I highly doubt this is the goal of the spotlight changes.
I know subeta staff had a lot to do with the issues lately, but THIS is no issue that came up just recently. There are many who wait for a long time just to get kicked out, might be I am just the only one I'm speaking it out loud, but I know they are out there.
So, please, Subeta, consider a reasonable change on the Spotlight system. Thank you.

Yeah, I've kind of just gave up on this. I don't even care anymore to make profiles or stories for my pets.
My pet Paper Witch was kicked out I have no idea when. It had been in there for some months. Though I believe I know why, some coding change awhile back threw the profile off and I didn't even notice until the day I went to check something in the tc. Gave me a good reason to completely change the profile. (Go to its profile at your own risk. The tc may upset your browser as it loads. lol)
My pet Princess Butterball on the other hand, now has been in there way over a year. I don't think she was ever kicked out and renominated for me to notice she's been in there that long. I know it's been long enough that I've actually had multiple times I've wanted to change up her profile or even her. Never did because I'm kind of wondering just how long this can go on.

asked for input on changes to the spotlight back in May of last year but it does not appear anything has been implemented yet which is a disappointment. But not surprising...
And then back in July she said this:
So, since it seems pretty clear that changing the system is a very low priority for staff, it would be nice if would at least bump it up to 5 winners a week like she was thinking about doing 6 months ago. Or even say that';s not an option, so people don't continue to think it is?
Tl;Dr needs to at least communicate what she has planned for this, since implementing change clearly isn't happening
The problem is that you guys are expecting staff to follow through with what they've said they're going to do. It just doesn't happen around here.
I've had about 6 of my pets nominated for a long time now. The last time I won Spotlight was in April of last year. I mean, it's not a HUGE deal, but it's still kind of annoying because I love the Spotlight, pets are the main reason I'm here (like 99% kind of main) and seeing stuff like the Spotlight neglected is so... painful. I really like to share my pets with people, since a lot of them have special meanings (like Eiya, when she won people loved her and it made me so happy).
Honestly it seems like pets in general are becoming a lower and lower priority for staff. :(
This makes me very unlikely to even bother trying to submit a pet into the spotlight.
i agree with this... It's ridiculous how long it takes for some pets to go from being nominated to being kicked or winning. And not knowing why a pet is kicked is really annoying. I wish we would receive an event that said why.
I think it would be good to have the 5 winners a week at least, if we can't get any other improvements to this feature.
I finished a pet early last year and haven't felt motivated because of this. I mean think of the good to come out of tweaking this -_-! People will be encouraged to actually work on their pets again. This means all of these things will be sold more often: MKBs, TC items, potions, profiles, art, and pet slots.
I enjoy working on pets, but if I know the end result will hardly have any chance of being seen/shared then what's the point? The excitement is almost gone when it's been a year since you've completed it.
I also just find it really hard to believe that it's "not feasible" to give at least a quick notice on why a pet was kicked out (or even a notice that they were kicked at all), considering custom wearables get lists.
Especially if the spotlight was lowered to 3 winners a week because of how few there were in the winning queue. If there weren't a lot then why would it be so hard to add a reason for being booted? I mean something as simple as "check your spelling/grammar!" or "layout hard on the eyes", in a little sidebar event.
tldr i'm just a grumpy petperson I guess u_u
OH YEA and also having only 3 winners a week still with a 2-week cooldown last time I checked? wtf?
despite this being a pet site, visiting other people's pet page is extremely rare for me here. i don't even visit my own pet page.
I'm glad someone made this post because I had planned on making one as well. With a new year, I have high hopes to see some vast improvements to the Spotlight system. After Rah's thread, nothing had even been mention, and I figured it was time to have another discussion about it.
I currently have two pets Nominated, which could mean they are queued in the to be looked at pool or the ready to win pool. I have no idea because Nominated isn't a distinct classification of which stage a pet is in. This would be one of my first changes to the system because there needs to be more a distinction between levels.
I think the worst part right now for me, is that I have all this motivation to work on my pets but this realization that the Spotlight is severely neglected, and the Pet community of late has been quite quiet. All this oomph to work on pets but knowing that there is no real end game. I would so love to see a plot this year that uses pets for something other than battling :/
- If you don't mind sharing the information, how many pets are in the ready to be looked at queue? And how many are in the ready to win queue?
That would be a really interesting question. How many pets are currently in the queues? So we as user would have an imagination what is going on. The whole spotlight system is utterly disguised and covered, not only those numbers, also what stage in the "winning/voting process" the pets are, and also the reasons of declination. So, at least those numbers would be nice to know.

- There are currently around 60 pets in the ready to win queue, and about 300 in the ready to be looked at queue. Many of the 'ready to be looked at' HAVE actually been looked at, but we were very much on the fence about them (either it's fandoms that we don't personally know, or subject matter that we're not personally into, which is why we're developing a better system to get more eyes on the aesthetics portion of the spotlight judging) To put this in greater perspective, on average we get about 20-30 pets into the win queue out of every 100.
We did discuss the spotlight in a meeting yesterday, it's not forgotten, and we do appreciate the reminders that you're really waiting on it in order to feel it's worth working on again. We know it's taking a long time, and we're sorry - I don't want to keep posting with this same message over and over, so the next thing you'll see from us on this will be actual progression.
I'm not motivated to work on my pets any more. For me a pet is only finished once it won the spotlight and I feel like i can't carry on if I still have so many who are still waiting to win. It's been almost a year since my last pet won, and during the whole of 2015 I had 6 pets nominated. 2 which got recently bumped out of the queue for unclear reasons and 4 who are still waiting.
This is a pet site, it would be lovely if the focus could actually shift to pets for a change :s

- More like on a fanpet. If someone has done a Quentin from Subeta fanpet we can tell if it's been done well because Quentin is our creation and we can see how a user has taken their character and made a great fan pet out of it - appropriate minion, Quentin's colours, uses Quentin's image and actually refers to Quentin in the story. If someone has done a Final Fantasy fanpet and none of us have played Final Fantasy, we don't know if it's been done particularly well, we don't know if the images they've drawn are correct for the character, we can't immediately say 'Oh, this image is from something else entirely' - does that make sense? We get a lot of fandom pets and some of them look aesthetically ok, but we just can't tell if they make sense as to what they're trying to be, or if they've full on copied their fandom without trying to create something original within it.
okay that does make a lot more sense knowing it's meant in terms of fanpets! the way it was written in the op kinda made it read like fanpets AND originals so i was like '?? wait what that cant be right'
but yeah i can def see what you mean with fanpets being a big ol' mystery if you've no idea where they're really coming from haha thank you for clarifying!!
- no problem! I think I was just continuing my thought in that last post rather than adding an extra thing, although maybe I was thinking in terms of hobbies - for example, if someone did a knitting pet that described how to knit and I had no idea how to knit, I wouldn't be sure if that was a good guide on knitting. I've certainly accepted plenty of pets with a character that I don't particularly enjoy for myself, but I can tell it's been done well and follows the spotlight rules!
Obviously this isn't a topic of vast interest for me or anything, but the whole talk of fandom pets made me curious.
I didn't see anything in the spotlight rules involving this, but would it be possible to add something akin to this into the rules: all fanpets must have their respective fandom credited, as well as the character they are based on. So y'know, when staff look at a new pet if there's no mention of a fandom it can be assumed it's an OC, and if there's credit then they'll know exactly what fandom/characters to look up? (I don't think this needs to be a pet profile based rule or anything, just for the spotlight.)
Then the rules could be updated/boot the fanpets no one is familiar with/make a news announcement so people would know what's up-- if something like this would be helpful, anyways?
I dunno, to me I'd hate to blindly play "let's figure out if this is an OC or fanpet!" and having people make mention one way or another seems idk.. helpful.
