As per usual this suggestion comes from scouring Subetalodge for pet TC ideas and coming up disappointed. In this case, I couldn't help but notice that while Subeta has at least one item for most of the other sciences - chemistry, biology, astronomy, even sociology - the discipline of psychology is a little neglected, with not even a textbook to its name.
At first I just wanted a psychology textbook, but then I thought about and I realised there's a lot more potential here. We could have:
Books about psychology; mental illness and how to deal with it; criminology and crime (my pet subjects); therapy.
A stereotypical 'therapist's couch'.
Phrenology heads, maybe similar props and diagrams.
Something that references famous studies? A drooling dog for Pavlov, a white rat or rabbit for Little Albert, etc etc. Or is that a little obscure?
Maybe items that serve the same purpose for mental illness as wheelchairs etc do for physical illness; I'm sure there's some but I can't think of them right now, sorry...
More pill items? (I dunno about this one. Maybe it's a little risky.)
Honestly, I'd really, really love more items to do with criminology and crime but that's probably just because I have a degree in the subject. Sorry if this is a little slapdash, it's nearly 10pm here and I'm a bit sleepy.
I think there's some neat ideas in here! For "items that serve the same purpose for mental illness as wheelchairs etc do for physical illness" I'm guessing you mean things like weighted blankets and the like? I see what you mean about the pill items and admittedly it would make me weirdly uncomfortable having real world meds for mental illness on Subeta, but tbh that's down to me not wanting to drag my own personal experiences with them here. Other than that I fully understand they're just functional objects that help a lot of people, and having them as items on Subeta might make people who use them feel their illnesses are more widely understood and accepted. After all, someone taking medication for depression, anxiety, adhd and the like is just as normal as someone using crutches for a broken foot. I'd love to add this stuff to the science masterpost topic but I think it's too old to go back and post on now :x
Things like weighted blankets, yeah. I don't know if stim toys could be a thing here? Maybe more therapy animals or just items related to them.
And honestly, I suggested more pills because a) four of my pet's characters take medication for physical and/or psychological issues (Depressive has depression (duh) and an undiagnosed schizoid disorder; Yinglong has anxiety and a prosthetic limb; Enigmatic has OCD and anxiety; Chuuni has anxiety, severe OCD, paranoia, PTSD, and is autistic; Wonderland is possibly schizophreniac and BPD) and b) decent pill items that don't cost millions are hard to find.
I had no idea stim toys were a thing so I googled it and I'm about to order myself so many chewable necklace things just to save my actual jewellery x'D I've started using a yo-yo to keep my hands busy so I don't pick my socks apart whilst sitting at my desk :x It's just to manage anxiety like, but it helps a lot. I'd love to see some on the site.
And crikey I know, the two generic pill items I can think of were in the reading drive shop and super expensive D: Then we have pain medication and the ones from the peka boo event I think. The only thing is, would they be named generically or have the actual medication name? Having generic names might be a little insensitive??(I'm not sure if that's the right word). As much as I wish there was a generic 'solve all of x mental illness forever' pill (which I get sick of people seeming to think that's what antidepressants etc. actually do) it's just not even in the same ocean as being that simple irl. But otherwise that'd be a heck of a lot of items :S
I've heard of them but I haven't really done that much research into the subject. I always wring my hands like I'm washing them or twine my fingers together when I'm feeling anxious, sometimes press my palms together as hard as possible or tangle my fingers in my hair; I dunno if they do anything for that.
Serotonin pills? Depression pills? I have no idea, actually. Buuut given that some of Subeta's mental illness-related items can be a bit... yeah, maybe we're better off not risking it.
i wholeheartedly agree~! we really need more psychology and psychiatry-themed items on subeta. ; w ;
How about getting one of those plastic tangle things? You can twist and twine them around your palms and feel the pressure of doing so and how smooth they are and the joins between the pieces :D These are kinda unrelated but omg kinetic sand and those little tubs of round magnets. Ooh! And glitter jars (as in the ones filled with glitter and water/oil that you can shake and watch it swirl around, not actual jars just full of glitter). Those could make awesome items on site w
